"Maybe i'll be a doctor," she says biting into a fig. It was the only fruit at the last gas station stop and Tashi bought five packs, tired of the usual chips and jerky you had been living on. Now the nutty saccharine smell has overtaken the car, only mediated by the open window.
Her words pull you away from the road in front of you and you look over to her in the passenger seat. "Or maybe a lawyer," Tashi adds and when your eyebrows raise in reaponse she lets out a laugh. “What? Don’t think I can?”
It’s a joke and a challenge wrapped together. Her finger runs over where she the bit the fig, staring right at you.
“I never said that,” you sigh with a small smile. Nor is it what you thought. There is no doubt about what she will go on to do. You both know it, but to bring tennis into the conversation now would be sacrilegious. Yet when her eyes narrow slightly, it dawns on you that your response has unwittingly committed the sin you were trying to avoid.
You bite the inside of your mouth and turn back to the road in front of you. She watches you drive for another minute or so, before turning to the open window, eyes closing against the wind.
“I could you know,” she whispers. Her finger presses against the fig until it digs deep into the flesh, somehow making the sweet smell even stronger.
