It has been almost a month since the first day I started my new studies. So much stuff happened already in this period, where should I start? Oh I know, let’s start with the teachers.
Our animation department is being led by Michiel. Besides his faulty english he is a great Narrative design teacher. No I mean really, his ability to speak in a language other then dutch is simulair to a chiwawa trying to actually bark like a real dog. My classmates invented this drinking game were you have to take a shot everytime Michiel says “uhm”. I guess we will be drunk in no time.
Anyhow, let’s move on to the next teacher Victor. Victor is pretty intens. Despite the fact that he is wearing the same black outfit every single day his personality is much more... colorful? I would rather say it’s pretty all-round. The class got so inspired by him that he turned out into a meme in our groupchat. Some quotes of him: “No bf/ no gf, no family, no friends, just draw”, or “beautiful artist. terrible work. I could do that better.” One day we went out for supermarket sketching (he invented it himself). It’s basically drawing other people you see in shops. It can result in funny conversations or us being thrown out by the manager of Albert Heijn Supermarket because customers got uncomfortable. We drew three old ladies who were sitting in a café, after we were finished Victor showed the three old ladies our work and asked them if they agreed on how bad we drew them. Well you will probably hear more of Victor in the future, but for now, let’s introduce another interesting teacher.
This will be our Audio teacher Rob. He started our first class with: “don’t do anything funny, I have a lazy eye and that gives me the opportunity to look at two different sides of the classroom at the same time.” During that class he explained on how to use old school recorders. While talking he started to contradict himself: “I cannot see, that is the disadventage of this thing, I cannot see if it’s to loud.... pause... but I do, because these red leds will flash.” After this small contradiction he tried to test it with: “Test, test 1 2 3, test...icle.”. Funny little man, that Rob. You can see that he is really passionate about his job. Whenever the Dr. Who theme starts to play his eyes light up and whenever somebody wants to touch his keyboard he halts them to check if their hands are clean enough, thereafter he will fully fuck up your keyboard playing by pressing random buttons. Yes, I think Rob is my favorite teacher up to now. Maybe it’s because he always walks by, checks my screen and gives an acknowledging pat on my back while saying: “good job”.
Of course, these three teachers are not my only teachers. We have Frodo from Dynamic Design, we have Miranda from Animation Theory, we have Pieter from Station Instruction, Ces from Research&Development and finally we have Caroline as our Career Coach. You will hear more about them in the future, but for now, it’s time for me to sleep tight. Being an animator in progress takes lots of energy :-)
