sometimes it just makes me really happy to draw a character I really liked from an obscure series! for those unaware, this is Sakaki and the Iriomote wildcat kitten Mayaa from Azumanga Daioh (Mayaa doesn't show up until late in the series where the girls are in their third year but he is well worth the wait)

also I looked up the Iriomote Wildcat because I remembered they were already endangered while Azumanga Daioh was running and I wanted to see if they were still around. Good news: there are still Iriomote wildcats! Bad news: They are still critically endangered as of 2019, but there are ongoing conservation and protection efforts on the Iriomote island and with the rest of Japan The IUCN website has more information on what conservation efforts are ongoing and what more needs to be done:
