just watched episode 1 and 2 of love through a prism.
it’s been a while since an anime really grabbed me like this.
i love the art style, the way art itself is depicted, the characters are immediately endearing, and i’m weak for the rivalry trope, especially broody guy x studious girlie.
for now, i’m genuinely enjoying myself, but i can already feel that little voice in my head going “oh no, historical setting detected, i’m going to overthink everything.” more on that in another post.
loving the vibe, quietly bracing myself for what’s coming.
Wind Breaker S1 Review
— Once again, this is one of them animes my brother or my fiance has been recommending me to watch since 2024 but kept shelving it. And I finally sat down to watch it now S2 is out.
— As always, typical Jeirin, I have the COMPLETE lookup merch of this badboy and have pre-ordered the Onemutan figures (the sleeping figs). And now I think my goal is to get the nendoroids. Damn Jeirin, calm down. Which btw I did find Sakura’s the other day and then placed it back down BRUUUUHHHH. I think Suo’s is out too. 😋 (or naaah its not as crazily hype imo so merch are not selling out fast, I can chill).
ANYWAY—
— Oh my god. First two episodes of this anime got me thinking and analysing about law and order, and Sakura’s rejection mindset, and suddenly being welcomed in this town where everyone loves and appreciates him.
— THE TYPE / KIND OF LEADER UMEMIYA IS!! He’s such a cool guy 🥺 and yea when I first came across with him the first time, I swear I called him “plantito Umemiya” (plant uncle). I might need some gardening tips from this man I dont have a green thumb (bruuh stuff adults in their mid-20s say lol).
— JO TOGAME — I was so ready to hate him but then, ohhh that fight with Sakura? Yes truly the best fight in the season. Can I just say though that he’s beautiful written? 🥺 how he was introduced as an antagonist and that backstory is just delivered so well.
— once again, my brother had asked me who my favourite character is so far, atm its Togame, Umemiya and Suo. And then Kiryu and Kaji showed up. Okay, okay I like them too. ESPECIALLY KIRYU!! He may be added to my list of spirit animals.
— Suo is quite an interesting character, I lowkey wanna analyse him but lets see when it takes us. And once I start analysis characters, I get fixated on them.
— I ended up watching until S2, now I’m caught up.
Slayers e5
what the fuck is rezo's problem.
like, yeah, he's evil. no shit! he has a stupid middle part, giant pointy pauldrons, a red motif, and a cloak that obscures his body ominously. of course he'd turn to evil, horrible fashion sense is the demon that lurks in all of our hearts.
i mean why did he float up to this guy minding his own business and Red at him until he turned into a reptile gargoyle thing? fuck did he do to you, man!?
idk i'm so used to backstories like this being more involved. we know nothing about zelgadis except that he's a human that wanted to be strong. and from the looks of it, that was their first meeting... rezo didn't say a word to him... rezo probably didn't know anything about him... there was no reason at all to attack this one guy in particular! or any reason to do this at all, like what was the point, it doesn't even seem like the best way to indulge sadism! he's just being a prick at random!!!
normally i'd be like "you bastard, zelgadis looked up to you like a father!" or "you bastard, you betrayed prince zelgadis to destroy the kingdom!" or "you bastard, you tricked zelgadis to kill his family and destroy his life!", but there's nothing to go off of, so instead i'm like "hey fuck you man, why'd you even do that???"
the stuff with zolf was funny.
being so mean to the wolf guy
the scary offscreen beast being a giant fish with legs
the forced kiss having lina's entire head in his mouth because of the difference in size, and that making him blush like he considers that intimate
the final "no more being nice" torture being zolf just calling lina names and gagging her so she can't respond
the fact that zelgadis was standing by the whole time, not even taking a back seat, even though he isn't participating and this is all a stupid waste of time
i like how lina's color scheme turns bright blue underwater.
like it obviously doesn't make a lick of sense, but it's very visually striking and i think it's good to prioritize that.
it reminds me of super mario bros. the rock tile and brick blocks are bright red, but they become totally blue underground.
i find the 90s anime style a lot more striking than modern styles in general. this might be a lack of perspective or whatever, but i feel like the mainstream style has stopped evolving...
haruhi suzumiya and hayate the combat butler look different from modern anime, but not by much. this looks completely different from modern anime and those two.
this aired in 1995, those two aired in 2006 and 2007... so, the gap from now to that 2000s era is almost twice as big as the gap from that 2000s era to this 90s era... yet the change isn't nearly as dramatic.
i wonder what actually caused that shift... it has to be something, right? some reason it stabilized now, or some reason there was an especially sudden and severe shift back then.
evangelion's style is sort of halfway between the two, is that what did it? no, that was 1994...
You know what's great? That Yuji is just unapologetically young
He hugs Gojo whenever he's happy, he speaks what he thinks when it comes to what's going on, and he's just always doing what brings him joy in the moment
Yuji not wasting time yet also still finding ways to have fun like a normal teen is so wholesome and a breath of fresh air and I think that's one of his best traits. 💗
MANGA/ANIME LOG #01: Houseki no kuni - Ichikawa, Haruko
Constantly, I think to myself I would like to be reborn
Love Tyrant
Genres: Comedy, Romance, Supernatural
Episodes: 12
Rating: 4/5
Review:
As many of you may know, depending on when you are reading this, Love Tyrant has just recently finished airing. I was quite pleased. Though a short anime it was definitely different from most other anime I have seen before within the same genre. The concept and story line was the first I have seen of its kind and I greatly enjoyed it. Why I didn’t give it a 5/5 was it was missing a serious WOOOOOWWW factor, the type of feeling that anime that really impact your life give you. I appreciated the comedy and entertainment of this show however that emotional feeling that transcends my computer screen and touches my heart was missing.
All in all, I would most definitely recommend this anime!
/RECOMMENDED
okay so. i really like love through a prism (prism dono) so far, but some clichés definitely rub me the wrong way XD
the romanticised london of the early 1900s, completely detached from colonial reality, felt… unsettling. yes, anglo-japanese relations at the time were pragmatic and strategic rather than openly hostile, but still, presenting england as a purely enlightened cultural heaven while it was colonising half the world is a choice.
the bicycle scene especially annoyed me. england being framed as “more evolved” because women could ride bikes freely, while japan supposedly couldn’t, felt very white-colonial in tone. historically, yes, cycling became common earlier in england, including for women, while in japan it was rarer, expensive, and often socially frowned upon for women until later. but calling that “progress” while ignoring imperial violence is… meh.
same with the pants discourse. trousers were already standard for men in england, while women wearing them was rare and controversial, and japanese men were also increasingly adopting western trousers as part of modernisation. framing pants as inherently masculine and modern just reinforces a very eurocentric idea of progress.
so yeah, these little details really buy into white colonial narratives for me. that said, for the sake of entertainment, i’m choosing to close my eyes a bit and enjoy the art and characters. my brain just refuses to fully switch off when history is involved 😅
