I DON'T GET IT.
Okay... so I've decided to go ahead and read the OP manga 'cause I wanna see how Luffy's new form looks and already I am so confused on some things, and ticked off on others. I mean, I've never been a huge Oda fan for how he treats women in his series, but I've never thought he was bad at what he does. But--

Kakashi & Da Boyz: Lab Updates
Introduction
Approximately two years ago, I wrote this pairing lab report which compared Kakashi’s manga interactions with his top five AO3 pairings (excluding sensei/student and original character pairings). Since the numbers have shifted a lot for AO3, here’s what they look like in 2020.

The science of SnK returns!
Okay, it’s been a weekish since the second half of the third season started so it’s time to do some science! Well, for me to do some science. It’s time for you to read and wonder why I have so much free time!
ANYWAY! Today we are looking at the big hairy boy. The Beast Titan. I’ve really been looking forward to this because today there are no complicated chemistry formulas or quantum entanglement. Just good old fashioned Newtonian physics.
So today I am going to work out how hard the Beast Titan threw this rock. So we have two questions first of all. How big is the rock? And what is the rock made of? The first one is easy.
using this frame and the Beat Titan’s cannon height of 17 meters I can use pixel measurements to figure out this rock is roughly (It’s not a perfect sphere but close enough) 2.8 meters across and thus has a volume of 11.49 meters cubed. Now figuring out what the rock is made of is impossible so I’m just going to use granite just cuz. So the density of granite is 2650kg per meter cubed so with that and the volume we can work out the rock weighs about 30448.5 kg. So, like a lot.
Next, we need to know how far he throws it.
Using this frame, the cannon height of the walls of 50 meters and some more pixel measurements we know the Beast Titan throws this hefty boulder about 327 meters (Since the camera is at an angle the distance could be a little different but this is the best I got) So counting from the moments the rock leaves his hand it takes on average about 10 seconds to hit the gate. This gives it a speed of 32.7 meters per second. Using the formula for kinetic energy we get... 16270000 joules, turn that into newtons and we get... okay.
THAT IS THE FORCE OF THE SATURN V ROCKET AT TAKEOFF. YOU KNOW, THE ROCKET THAT TOOK PEOPLE TO THE DAMN MOON! NO WONDER IT CAUSES THE GROUND TO SHAKE WHEN IT HITS!
Okay... deep breath. Caps lock aside this kind makes sense. The Beast Titan throws the boulder like a shotput thrower at the Olympics. His round, pot belly allows him to build up a lot of rotary force and his longs arms allow him to really build up a lot of acceleration. Speaking of which it is time for my favorite bit of these!
HOW DEAD SHOULD LEVI BE?
The last two of these I talked about how dead Levi should be and people seemed to enjoy it so lets to it again. If the Beast Titan threw Levi with the same force he threw that boulder he would accelerate at a rate of...3568 meters per second per second... wow. That is 356g. Like. 10 times faster than the speed of sound. Forget sheering trauma or hypovolemic shock Levi is a fucking puddle at this point. That rock accelerates for about 4.5 seconds so lets so Levi does as well. A human at most can survive a little over 100g for a fraction of second and about 40-45g for a few seconds. Levi is going from 0 to 3568 meters per second in not a lot of time. His blood would boil, his skin would melt, eyes would explode and bones turn to dust in the blink of an eye.
Think that but like a million times worse. And more dead. A more liquid. So yeah. Levi is super, super really absolutely dead!
If you’ve read this far then I really want to thank you. Doing these takes quite a while and I really appreciate the fact that people seem to like these and hey, maybe you learned a thing or two. I’ve got some more planned as well to do with this season but if you have any ideas or questions then send them my way! Once again thank you!
Shouto Todoroki: A Quirky Genetic Case Study
(Spoilers for BnHA and Biology Class)
In a world of superpowers, Todoroki Shouto stands alone as a master of two quirks. A physiological impossibility, while some have the power to borrow or steal quirks, only Shouto naturally holds more than one.
Let’s dive in to the “science” behind quirks. They are genetically-linked, but not actually part of the genome. Quirks are most likely carried by epigenetic factors or something similar to mitochondrial DNA. The implications of this: quirks are hereditary, but not predictable like normal traits.
There are two common cases.
1) Parents with incompatible quirks have offspring with either one of the parental quirks. Since holding two quirks is generally impossible, one must win out, or the pairing will not be viable.
2) Parents with compatible quirks have offspring with a new quirk. However, the combination is unpredictable. For example, telekinesis and fire breathing might combine to cancel out the quirk factor altogether.
And then there’s a rare third case. One that, through miraculous luck, passes both parental quirks on to their offspring.
Shouto is what's known as a chimera. Specifically a bilateral chimera, meaning his left and right halves are genetically distinct. The bird pictured above is a real world example of this phenomenon. It’s actually a gynandromorph; half male and half female.
So, what causes chimerism? Basically, it occurs when twin (typically fraternal) zygotes merge early in development. But that's not quite the full story for Shouto.
Each half of the DNA from either parent carries the epigenetic quirk factor. Although the DNA they’ve formed is technically viable, these two quirk factors can’t exist together nor combine into a new quirk factor.
With two incompatible quirks, the DNA is pulled apart by the quirks’ opposing forces. After splitting, the halves replicate themselves as normal, forming two genetically distinct cells. Either new cell could act as a viable zygote, or both could which would result in identical twins with different quirks. Or, very rarely, something like this could occur:
Both halves of the original DNA go on to form zygotes, but the two zygotes merge at some point early in their development. This could create a mosaic chimera (a mix of both throughout the body) or a bilateral chimera (separated into two hemispheres).
In Shouto’s case, the zygotes merged back together bilaterally. Cells with fire quirk factors formed his left half, and cells with ice quirk factors formed his right. His DNA is the same in every cell, but each half carries epigenetic factors from a different parent.
Through this unlikely course of events, Shouto has the unique ability to wield two quirks at once. What’s more, his internal conflict between his mother and father turns outward, reflected down to the genetic level.
