Summary: As the niece he has raised since childhood comes of age to inherit her family’s estate, Captain Commander Yamamoto assembles a group of possible suitors who he would trust with his life. He did not anticipate her heart having already chosen one.
Well…as long as she’s happy, he supposes.
NOTE: Incredibly self-indulgent. I’ve strictly been -x reader in the past, but here’s one of my OCs. Kenpachi is probably a little ooc, but, again, I wrote this for me. MDNI
Chapter Five: Home at Last
Three weeks of waking up in Kenpachi's arms had spoiled Nina. Every morning was a new adventure; whether it was watching him train with his men, helping Yachiru with her endless projects, or simply existing in the comfortable chaos of Squad Eleven. Even the rough edges of life there had become endearing, like the constant sound of sparring or the way no one bothered to knock before bursting in with some urgent matter, though they'd learned quickly to wait if the captain's door was closed.
But now reality was creeping back in, heavy as the formal robes she hadn't worn since her wedding. The estate—her family's legacy, the home she'd fought so hard to reclaim—was waiting. There were responsibilities she couldn't ignore, traditions that needed maintaining, staff who depended on her guidance.
She tried visiting, splitting her time between the two places, but it felt like being torn in half. Every moment at the estate was spent missing the warmth of Squad Eleven, and every moment away filled her with guilt over neglecting her duties. The estate staff were kind and efficient, but they needed direction. The gardens her mother had loved so dearly needed attention. The very walls seemed to whisper of generations of noble blood and responsibility.
Two days passed without her usual visit to Kenpachi and Yachiru. Then three. She couldn't bear to see the life she wanted knowing she had to return to the life she owed her family. Instead, she sat by the window overlooking the gardens, watching cherry blossoms fall like snow onto the perfectly maintained paths. The same paths she'd walked as a child, learning what it meant to be noble, to put duty before desire.
She didn't hear him come in—she never did—but suddenly his presence filled the room like a storm front, wild and electric and absolutely unstoppable.
"This is where you've been hiding?"
She didn't turn around, afraid that seeing him would break what little composure she had left. "I'm not hiding," she whispered, but the lie tasted bitter on her tongue.
The floor creaked as he moved closer, and then he was beside her, a wall of warmth that made her realize how cold she'd been. Without conscious thought, she leaned into him, her body seeking his comfort even as her mind struggled with her duties.
"You're crying," he observed, rough fingers catching a tear she hadn't even noticed falling.
"No, I'm not," she tried to deny it, but her voice cracked traitorously. "I'm just...I don't know what to do."
His arm wrapped around her, pulling her fully against his chest. "About what?"
"Everything!" The dam finally broke, and the tears she'd been fighting spilled over. "I can't abandon the estate. I fought so hard to get it back, to restore our family's honor. There are people who depend on me, traditions that need to be maintained. But I..."
"You what?" His voice was unusually gentle.
"I don't want to be here!" The admission hurt, like ripping out a part of herself. "I want to be home with you and Yachiru. I want to wake up to the sound of training and Yachiru's laughter and your warmth. I want...I want..."
"Stop fighting it," he growled, and she realized she was trying to choke back sobs. "Let it go, woman. Ain't no one here but me."
Something in his words, in the way he held her so carefully despite his tremendous strength, broke the last of her resistance. She turned and buried her face in his chest, letting out all the tears she'd been holding back. His hand stroked her back as she cried, offering silent comfort in a way that was so uniquely him—no empty words or false promises, just his steady presence and unwavering support.
When the tears finally slowed, she remained pressed against him, drawing comfort from his heartbeat under her ear. "I'm sorry," she mumbled into his clothes. "I got your uniform wet."
He snorted. "Like I care about that." His hand came up to cup the back of her head. "You done crying?"
She nodded slightly.
"Good. Now listen up 'cause I'm only gonna say this once." He shifted so he could look at her properly. "You ain't gotta choose."
She blinked up at him in confusion. "What?"
"Between here and Squad Eleven. Ain't gotta pick one or the other." He gestured at the room around them. "This place is part of you, right? Part of who you are?"
She nodded slowly.
"Then we make it work. Have the staff maintain it, visit when you need to. Hell, we can stay here sometimes if you want. Ain't like I can't flash step to the division when I need to." His eye met hers steadily. "But your home is with me now. Wherever that ends up being."
Fresh tears welled up, but these were different. "You...you'd do that? Stay here sometimes?"
He shrugged. "Place is fancy as hell, but it's got good training grounds. Maybe set up some barracks for the men to use when they're on this side of Seireitei. Make it useful instead of just pretty."
The image of Squad Eleven members training in her family's pristine gardens should have horrified her. Instead, she found herself smiling for the first time in days. "The neighbors would have fits."
His grin was wolfish. "Good. Bunch of stuck-up bastards could use some shaking up."
She laughed wetly, and his expression softened. "There you are. Was wondering where my wife went."
"I'm sorry I worried you," she said, reaching up to touch his face.
"Tch. Just don't do it again. Yachiru's been climbing the walls without you around." His eye narrowed slightly. "And I ain't been sleeping right."
The admission, gruff as it was, made her heart swell. "I love you," she whispered, pressing a kiss to his jaw.
He turned his head to capture her lips properly, pouring all his unspoken feelings into the kiss. When they finally broke apart, he pressed his forehead to hers. "Come home."
She nodded, already feeling lighter. "Yes. But...can we stay here tonight? I'd like to show you some of my favorite places."
His grin turned wicked. "Got any private spots in these fancy gardens of yours?"
"Kenpachi!" But she was laughing now, the heavy weight of indecision lifting from her shoulders. "Actually...there is this one secluded area behind the cherry trees..."
He was on his feet in an instant, scooping her up in his arms. "Show me."
As he carried her through the halls of her ancestral home, Nina realized something important: home wasn't about the walls around you or the traditions you maintained. Home was wherever you could be truly yourself, with the people who loved you exactly as you were. And maybe, just maybe, she could have both after all.
——
The arrival of the trunks from the Okamimori estate caused quite a stir in Squad Eleven. Several members were lounging in the courtyard when the first deliveries appeared, carrying elaborate boxes and pieces of furniture that looked comically out of place among the sparse military surroundings.
"Oi, what's all this fancy shit?" Ikkaku called out, pausing mid-spar with Yumichika.
"Lady Nina is moving in permanently," one of the staff announced primly, trying to maintain his dignity while navigating a particularly heavy trunk.
The news spread through the division like wildfire. Groups of squad members gathered in clusters, watching the procession of elegant furnishings with varying degrees of curiosity and amusement.
"Permanently?" Yumichika's eyes lit up. "How wonderful! Finally, someone with taste around here."
"You think she'll keep making those sweet buns?" someone called from the back.
"Forget the buns! You think she'll keep patching us up? She's a lot nicer than anyone in Squad Four.”
The murmurs grew more enthusiastic as they remembered all the little ways Nina had already begun improving their daily lives. Even the most hardened fighters had to admit that having someone around who could properly dress wounds and didn't lecture them about fighting was convenient.
"But she's nobility," a newer recruit whispered. "Won't she look down on us?"
Ikkaku snorted. "Have you seen the way she looks at Captain? Trust me, she ain't looking down on anyone."
"Besides," Yumichika added with a knowing smile, "any woman who can handle our captain and actually make him happy has earned her place here, noble or not."
The discussion was interrupted by Yachiru's excited squeal as she bounded through the courtyard. "Nina-chan is staying forever! Kenny said so!"
Looking at the genuine joy on their lieutenant's face, any remaining doubts among the squad members melted away. If both their captain and lieutenant had accepted her so completely, who were they to question it?
Nina, meanwhile, found herself restless in her new permanent home. She'd never been one for idleness, and watching the squad members train and work while she had nothing to do made her uncomfortable. The estate matters she could handle remotely, and the medicinal garden that had been planted was time consuming, but it wasn't enough to fill her days.
She started small at first: organizing the division's paperwork, which was in shameful disorder, creating a proper inventory system for their medical supplies, implementing a schedule for routine maintenance of the training grounds. The men quickly grew accustomed to seeing her flitting about the division, always finding some way to make things run more smoothly.
When she discovered their filing system consisted mostly of shoving papers into random drawers, she spent three days organizing everything while muttering under her breath about "impossible men" and "basic organization skills." The squad members found her increasing comfort with showing her irritation oddly endearing.
She'd taken to handling her estate matters from their shared bedroom, spreading scrolls and ledgers across their futon during the day. Kenpachi would find her there in the evenings, surrounded by papers and chewing on her brush handle as she worked through some complicated account or another.
The sight of her making herself so at home in his space, comfortable enough to let her noble mask slip as she cursed at particularly frustrating documents, filled him with a satisfaction he hadn't expected. Still, he could see how cramped she was, trying to work from their bedroom.
The solution came to him during a captain's meeting, of all places. While Yamamoto droned on about budget allocations, Kenpachi found himself thinking about the unused room next to his office. It had been serving as extra storage, mostly for broken training equipment they never got around to fixing.
That evening, he dragged her away from her work with his usual lack of ceremony.
"Ken! I need to finish these accounts!"
"Shut up and come with me, woman."
He led her to a door she'd never paid much attention to before, then pushed it open with an uncharacteristically uncertain gesture. "Here."
Nina stepped inside and gasped. The room had been completely transformed. The walls were lined with shelves, a solid wooden desk dominated the center, and—most touchingly—there was a small table near the window that held a tea set she recognized from her family estate.
"Is...is this for me?"
"Tch. Well, it ain't for me." He rubbed the back of his neck, watching her reaction carefully. "Figured you needed your own space to work. Got some of the men to help clean it up. Yumichika insisted on arranging things—said something about decor or whatever."
Nina turned to him with tears in her eyes, and he groaned. "Aw hell, if you don't like it—"
She cut him off by throwing herself into his arms. "I love it. Thank you."
His arms wrapped around her automatically, and he pressed a kiss to her hair. "Yeah, well...just don't expect me to knock before coming in."
She laughed against his chest. "I wouldn't dream of it."
Life settled into a rhythm neither of them had expected but both came to cherish. Nina split her time between managing her estate affairs from her new office and involving herself in the day-to-day running of the division. The men grew used to her presence, some even seeking her out for everything from medical attention to advice on writing reports.
Kenpachi found himself stopping by her office throughout the day, sometimes just to watch her work. She had a way of sticking her tongue out slightly when she was concentrating hard, and he found it inexplicably endearing. Sometimes she'd look up and catch him watching, and her smile would light up the room.
They still spent every other weekend at the estate, maintaining her family's presence there while making it more accessible to the division. True to his word, Kenpachi had set up training grounds on the property, and the sight of Squad Eleven members practicing among the cherry blossoms had become less shocking to the neighboring nobles.
But it was the quiet moments that surprised them both the most; the way they'd gravitated toward each other without thinking, the natural way they'd learned to exist in each other's spaces. Kenpachi would absently run his fingers through her hair while reading reports, and Nina would automatically pour him tea exactly the way he liked it without being asked.
Love, they were discovering, wasn't always about grand gestures or passionate declarations. Sometimes it was about creating space for each other, about understanding without words, about finding home in unexpected places.
