When my window was open yesterday, a wasp came into my room and had a look around. She buzzed really loudly. I approached her slowly and directed her with a likewise slow pushing motion towards the window, and she left again. Chill visitor
Just visiting!! I love her
Thanks a lot for selling your ebooks on other platforms instead of going amazon exclusive! I don't like how amazon tries to lock you into their systems only, so I really don't like buying ebooks from them, so it's really appreciated!
Of course! I know why some authors go Amazon exclusive. You get better payment deals and promotions from them (even though Apple Books pays more in royalties) but from where I’m sitting? Fuck them, they don’t get to control my work. And I will absolutely not be using Audible for any of the audiobooks. Audible is a gods damned racket for creators.
This is how you wind up with a trash can lid where your organs should be, Sulu
y'know, I've seen a post about how voice acting should be done by actual voice actors, not celebrity actors, and wondered... does Colin count? At least I can't even tell it's his voice in Wizards or Luck, that should count for something...
Personally, no. I can't speak for others who hold that view, as it's not really something I've talked to others about much. But as someone who generally agrees with that stance, I'd personally say no.
I think smaller/TV actors are exempt from the perils of big name voice actors - because they're less well-known, it's easier to separate them from the characters they voice - if you want to.
Like, in our case, as fans of Colins, we like to connect him with Gerry and Douxie. Doing so helps us enjoy the characters more so.
But I doubt there's anyone out there begrudging the fact that they can't enjoy Gerry the Leprechaun because they can't stop thinking about Colin O'Donoghue every time they hear his voice. Which, I think, is one of the main complaints about hiring celebrities.
Also, he's done different voices/accents in all of his major projects - so he really doesn't have an easily recognizable voice for people other than his main fan base. I mean, even if you watched Once all the way through, you might not pick up on the fact that it's Captain Hook voicing Gerry - because they sound completely different.
But generally speaking, I do agree with the stance. I think big name celebrities with easily recognized voices shouldn't do voice work in animated films - unless they're voicing animated versions/parodies of themselves. When I watch an animated film for the purpose of hearing Colin's voice work, then yes... I'm actively seeking to connect the celebrity voice with the character. But when I'm watching an animated film to watch an animated film... I really don't like it when Mel Gibson's voice is suddenly coming out of a 2D fish, because now I'm no longer thinking about the 2D world they're building on the screen. Now I'm also thinking "Who is that? I KNOW that voice! Oh yeah, it's Mel Gibson." and now I'm gonna forever connect Mel Gibson with that character.
And even if it's a celebrity I really like... it's still going to ruin the character for me, and possibly the entire film. Because it just... takes away from it all. It lessens the character for me, and that lessens their role, and that often lessens the entire movie. It's one of the main reasons I never got into Shrek, and my main complaint about Finding Nemo/Dory.
But no, I don't think the argument includes Colin 🙂
Should Killian have a black cat because, well, black, or a white cat, because getting white cat hair every darn where would be funny?
😂😂😂 I have no idea!
Maybe a mix of both!
I always imagine him picking up some mangy cat that’s hanging around at port one day..
A scraggy thing he can’t help feel sorry for (though he’ll deny it completely) and keeps it on board to keep the rats and mice away...
He claims it’s only there to do a job and moans about it... but it finds a way almost as if by ‘magic’ into his quarters at night and curls up in his chair.
He didn’t let it in, don’t be absurd! The blighter must’ve snuck in when he wasn’t looking 👀
And he didn’t give it those off cuts of ham, the toerag ‘stole’ them off his plate.
That cat was found on a google image search btw
I came across this and thought of you: During a naval battle between Brazil and Uruguay in the middle of the 19th century, the Uruguayan vessel ran out of shot. Captain Coe, the commander of the ship, ordered the cannon loaded with Dutch cheeses. “They were too old and hard to eat anyway,” he reasoned.
In a few minutes Coe’s ship opened fire again. According to William Walsh, the first two cheeses went sailing over the mark, but finally one crashed into the main mast of the Brazilian ship, shattering it. Cheese shrapnel killed two sailors standing near the Brazilian admiral. After taking four or five more cheeses through the sails, the Brazilian admiral ordered his ship to retire from the engagement.
How does it feel to know that there are hundreds, maybe thousands of people who know isoetes exist only because you blog about them? :D
ok so out of curiosity for this ask i went and looked at the google trends for the search ‘isoetes’ to see if i like, unintentionally influenced the proliferation of isoetes fanclubs or anything:
okay so not much change (honestly i wonder how many of these searches were my own) but it seems as if isoetes was peaking in 2004. where, i wonder?
ok. now see this is hilarious because Dr. Carl Taylor, one of the world’s leading experts on isoetes, was an author on and published a huge paper about DNA identification of isoetes in 2004. he also works at the smithsonian botany department in washington DC and if i remember correctly still does a lot of work in bodies of water around there.
like. this is such a niche plant interest that you can pin down in google trends exactly when a large paper was published and who published it
