I know I already made a post to this effect but it's so baffling to me when someone defends the fact that headphone jacks are slowly but surely getting phased out by smartphone manufacturers with some variations of "wireless headphones are more convenient anyway" bc like. If we're talking about convenience what I like about wired headphones is that they conveniently have a single plug that makes the same damn pair of headphones universally compatible with every single audio-output-capable device I own, from my phone and my computer to my fucking gameboy and my casette player, it doesn't get any more convenient than that.
its actually easy to de-enshittify your digital experience all you need to do is install this browser extension and this browser extension and this browser extension and input this custom script into the advanced box and go into your system settings and reconfigure all these options you didnt know existed and change your entire workflow and switch to this alternative operating system and this alternative web browser and this alternative chat client and this alternative word processor and this alternative- sorry that one turned out to be malware delete that one okay now double check your task manager for unwanted background processes and element block these ads and invest in a good VPN and append all your searches with AI blocking keywords and wait a few years until everything you just did becomes shitty too so you can do it all over again okay kitten. its literally that easy.
Thinking about the whole point of Olruggio being the Watchful Eye for Qifrey's atelier. Because, they have to have one... But Olruggio didn't really need to be that to live there, right?
Like I don't think there's any rule that says that it's not allowed for rural ateliers to have an adult that is not a Master or a Watchful Eye living there. Olruggio could have just lived there with them and do his own thing while someone else was appointed as a Watchful Eye.
So I wonder how he came to be that. Once Qifrey was registered as an active teacher in the middle of nowhere, the Great Hall would also need a record of who is watching over. The one that makes the most sense to me is Qifrey asking Olruggio. Maybe it was Beldaruit, who fully wanted to support his nepo baby and let him have the freedom with Olruggio he was always chasing after as a kid. Or maybe, after all, it was Olruggio, who didn't want to risk anyone unpleasant being assigned to Qifrey's side and decided that there's just never going to be anything more between them, so he might as well help Qifrey in any way he can.
If it was Qifrey's choice, I think there's multiple reasons why he would ask that.
First, Qifrey probably doesn't have a lot of friends that he would trust to trust him. Like I know the original reason he became a master was in order to feel anxiety, but also, his name is surrounded by gossip. How easy would it be to find an adult witch who won't care about the gossip and will not allow the rumors to influence their view on Qifrey and thus not report him for the tiniest things? And if not for his sake, he would probably realize that a judgmental and over-suspicious person living among them would create a toxic environment for his apprentices. And one of the ways he fought his guilt over becoming a teacher for selfish reasons was to ensure he's a good educator, and part of that is ensuring your students feel safe.
Second, in a scenario where he's assigned a witch who doesn't care about the gossip and is actually pretty cool with Qifrey, they may pose the danger of Qifrey getting critically comfortable around them. He already feels he's condemned Olruggio; I don't think he would want to risk condemning anyone else. As much as he hates the cycle he's trapped in with Olly, at least it's only him.
Plus, what if he has to erase Olly's memory and the Watchful Eye is actually watching, as they should be???
To be honest, those two reasons sound more relieving than anything else. And Qifrey does not do well with relief. So he gives himself a third reason to ask Olruggio to be his Watchful Eye:
I took this idea from a post around here (might share a link in the notes), this would practically make Olruggio think Qifrey is rejecting him permanently. He's not asking him to be roommates, nor is he asking him to help with a project. He's asking him to be his official, professional supervisor. I disagree with A LOT of the ways the Pointed Cap society does things, but Watchful Eyes are crucial and they can only be effective if they are emotionally detached from the Master they're watching over. Master messes up, Watchful Eye should immediately intervene and not allow their feelings for that person to cloud their judgment. The safety (physical, mental, emotional) of apprentices comes first. So for Qifrey to ask Olruggio to be his Watchful Eye would be to say "I expect you to fully put your feelings for me aside" which frankly is absurd considering what they'd experienced together even without Olly remembering the silverwood. But it's the only way Qifrey can see himself staying by Olruggio's side without the danger of Olly getting too close and Qifrey having to erase his memories more often than he already does. Plus, it would break Olruggio's heart, and that alone would cause some extra pain and guilt for Qifrey.
In any case, I think there would be a lot of characterization to explore if we got even a quick flashback to the time between Qifrey completing the fifth test and taking in Agott. (Maybe at a later point though cause there's definitely other pressing matters in the manga right now ajdhdkjdhdh)
Hi. I'm back on my Olruggio appreciation nonsense. I adore his character so much. Especially when it comes to how he behaves when he's angry vs scared. And on top of that how he interacts with the people around him when he is either of those things.
HELLA SPOILERS BELOW
I love it because this is this man genuinely angry. He's genuinely pissed here, but not once does he direct that at Coco. It would have been so easy for him to blame her, but nope. He knows exactly who's at fault and goes right for him.
Like he doesn't even look at her. It reads (to me) very "nothing against you, I'm doing my job. But YOU"
And it's the same here. He's mad a Qifrey, so when Qifrey corrects him he doesn't brush it off. He's like "ah I may have offended the child. Let me fix that real quick" and then it's right back to getting on Qifrey's ass.
He's so good at directing his anger at the people he's actually upset with rather than catching anyone else in the crossfire. Then we get to the whole point of this post: he has that quiet anger. He doesn't really yell when he's angry. He glares, but doesn't get into other people's space. He doesn't crowd or really even try to scare people into obeying.
And then by contrast this man does not hold back when he's scared. He is in people's faces. He's yelling. He's over here halfway to throwing an injured Qifrey against a cave wall.
The second he's scared/worried he does not care who he's talking to. Because like... sir this this person has the ability to fire you. What are you doing.
I do love that a lot of these are him screaming at Qifrey. Like he does not hold back when he thinks this man has put himself or the girls in danger. But he's not yelling at Coco here, she's there, but she's very clearly not the target. Which will forever be important to me. Because she's the one who ran off. It would be so easy for him to turn that one her. But he turns it on Bel and Qifrey because he can recognize this is a child and it's the adult's fault for not taking five seconds to think.
And then you have this. Where this man came off telling his best friend he wanted to help. That he just wanted Qifrey to be honest with him. He's scared. He's shocked. He's not angry. There is literally none in those eyes.
Then there's these three that were the ones that really got me thinking about this topic. This man is fucking terrified. And he has no one to put the blame on but himself. Because every time we see him yell, it's him yelling at the adults for not doing their jobs. For putting these girls in danger. And when it's him. When he feels he was the adult in charge who didn't do his job that anger gets turned on himself. It AGAIN would have been so easy to blame them. But he doesn't. Not once.
I just love 1. The difference between how his anger is shown vs his honest to goodness panic 2. That he seems to have a pretty good grasp of hitting his intended target and when he does catch someone else he backs up and genuinely apologizes
Plus then there's this panel where he just fully went "I will give you the same energy you come at me with" because the relationship he has with Hiehart is everything to me. Look at them being friends. Hiehart is really just Qifrey but bolded and italicized and I could talk about him and Olly's friendship all day.
did an unnecessarily deep dive into the layout of the atelier for Art Reasons and thought i might as well draw it out if i ever need it again so . here is how the atelier works to the best of my understanding
hope it can help other people too 👍 adding some more stuff below for extra reference
color coded and numbered ver (for better visualising)
notes:
manga layout from 'wha reproduction selection' notes from shirahama
anime art from @ kusanagi_art (official artist) on twt and screenshots from the anime (not included)
layout based mostly on the anime arts because its the most consistent (manga art seems to occasionally omit the round storage building, dorms, and/or the common room)
Need to say that bc based on old posts i saw ppl seem to think the round building is the dorms bc it points at that in shirahamas notes but based on the anime interior art the dorms are absolutely in the double story square building (the windows match up exactly)
theres more layers with the elevation of each building too but idk how to represent all that. its best shown in the anime ref of the outside though . ill try typing it anyway
main room + spire testing chamber + ollys bedroom = standard 'ground' level
dorms + spire bottom floor + common room = most sunken
Fun Fact did you know we have never seen qifreys room. which was the one reason i did all this research. i spent so long and it literally has never appeared ever (ollys room hasnt either but at least we see his workspace goddam)(i feel like qifreys room is abt to be a hydrogen bomb of pain in some way)
EDIT 1: stared at some more screenshots and did a couple fixes and change, gonna list them out below
the windows in girls rooms in the dorm are supposed to be on the outer side (facing the fields) so fixed that
two stairs leading up to girls rooms
dorms and main room are actually connected through the spire and not the round building !! idk if its consistent in the manga but in the anime its definitely connected through there (cant believe i missed this earlier lmfao its been fixed)
so the round building next to kitchen is not connected to the dorms so that might be the storage instead? qifrey does go to collect cocos uniform from there
qifreys room does not appear anywhere in the main dorm room (even in the more visible layout art) so it has to be elsewhere, and shirahamas notes for it no longer apply (rip)
the bigger dorm building actually doesnt have any entrances besides in inner one from the spire But the small building next to it does (and the two of them seem to be connected by a hallway) so the small building might be a common room? renamed it to that for now
qifreys room could either be in the round building or the common room, im leaning towards the latter so im putting it there for now but ill change it if we get a better look at either locations
the seating area and bookshelves from ch8/ep6 i originally had in the main dorm building could be in the common room instead? tho in the manga u can see the deck of the upper floor so i dont knowww
this is not a definitive guide in any way so feel free to point out mistakes and all that! (holds out hand) lets understand this atelier together
