i have so much respect for qifrey as a character because... here's this guy who will die if he receives comfort. we know that he took in children to ensure he stays anxious. and the whole thing with oru. but like... there has always been a simpler way for him to ensure that he does not go into that comfortable state. he could have spent his life at the great hall, where other people's assumptions about him and his life never died down. he could have been a part of the knights moralis, where he might have even had easier access to the brims.
but he does not do any of that. he builds a house from ruins beneath the stars where the dragons pass by. he takes in young kids and pretty much adopts them... he lives with the source of the comfort that could lead to his end.
he can't have hope. he can't have comfort, and yet the work he chose to do and how he does it, as well as the life he lives reflects his silent rebellion against fate, against their society. he is living a beautiful life that he does not wish to lose. despite everything he is still alive.
he just does not wish to survive, he wants to live. in a world that said he should not. this is so important to me.
Seeing anime onlies watch this moment and immediately think that Qifrey did it on purpose to scare coco or that he is hiding something evil that he can't let people see
Meanwhile, we manga readers now know it's a reflex to keep himself safe because of the abuse he went through before getting to the Great Hall, abuse that he doesn't even REMEMBER clearly but it is still there 20 something years later.
It is such good misdirection, makes Qifrey look insanely scary to both the audience and Coco herself, his secrets and motives still hidden and giving way to theorizing something darker or evil from him.
When in reality, the truth is much more complicated than just good/evil or light/darkness, a reocurring theme in the story.
#i cant help but also notice how the audience #oblivious to the truth is put in the place of judgement or demonizing qifrey #not much different from all the witches that judge him by his past or rumors #not much different from how society normalized judging victims of abuse #and are conditioned to look for a so called “perfect victim” #when victims will never be perfect
I am OBSESSED with your Beldaruit and Qifrey - their relationship is one of the ones i am most fascinated by in wha (probably because teacher-student dynamics that are also parent-child dynamics are something i WAT UP) and your art is so beautiful...i also love how you portray orufrey in that awkward in-between pimply stage of being a teenager it's SO cute
Beldaruit and Qifrey relationship is quite interesting! I love that Qifrey was a very traumatised kid who did not fit in and he did not follow the rules (in a world where witches love rigidity and codes), and he grew up so much since! He is still messed up, but he is taking his responsabilities when he is being called out. And he would not have become this kind person without Beldaruit. I wish we could have seen them without all this tension around Coco.
I adore how is he a little gremlin with his master, but I do believe they had a lot of gentle moments as well.
It is hard to fully understand how far Qifrey can be ok with comfort, as he sometimes handle it well and sometimes it is a big "NOPE". But I assume since the root is reset, he can handle way more affection and comfort than once he is an adult. As the roots are now much bigger and are only waiting to pop-out.
I also adore awkward Olly and Qifrey! it is a difficult age to be a teenager and have your first crush, and even more when your crush is on your best friend! And you add a curse with all of that!! (plus Qifrey has that innocence a very young child has, as he doesnt know/understand all society codes yet) This is a great recipe for angst but also very cute moments :)
Really fucking funny to me that the anime added Qifrey saying that the Romonon statues are likely to attack them due to their resentment of witches, cause in the manga my boy really just gets up and fires attacks at them with no single explanation. I mean it's also the season finale so they have to set up the fact that the Romonons will attack them and give a satisfying cliffhanger on this side too, but yeah.
Yup, all done cataloguing the whump 😊 it was absolutely delicious and the ending was jaw-droppingly good. Can't believe it's the end of the season, hope we get news about the next one soon!
