The story relates to Cast Away with a sickening twist.
Imagine surviving a plane crash and living in an island for days, still hoping that someday you'll be saved. Imagine having all of your hope crushed by learning that you will never be saved because in the outside world you're already dead and doesn't exist anymore. Imagine being an unwillingly participant of an experiment that will turn you to an animal...no, a monster, a mutant.
That's what happened to Semi, Miranda and Arnie after they encountered a mad but genius scientist named Dr. George Franklin. Everything felt so scary. They are treated not as humans but as specimens. What I admire the most is Semi and Miranda's friendship. They showed what it's like to be strong for your friend and to continue keeping themselves alive and well with the help of the other. When they were turned to 'animals' it seems that there's really no hope anymore but the ending surprised me. I didn't expect that they will turn back to humans. I could accept that they will turn to mutants but to be human again, it seems so unreal...then I realized yet again that I was reading a science fiction. Some parts are exciting and so gripping but others can be depressing as well.
I also became interested of genetic engineering because of this book but it's really sickening to think of infusing a human and an animal together.
