Are you a planner, pantser, or planster?

i am, what they call, a hot mess!!!! with fic i’ve been definitely on the pantser side of things, but im in denial and will claim plantser instead

What is your approach to world building?

stacking little details on top of each other and then stepping back and look at what i built and hope it doesn’t come falling down????

What is your approach to research?

when it comes to fic im pretty lazy. plenty of things i could research but just don’t feel like researching, with most of my fics. other things i do look up, sometimes right away and then i get completely sidetracked and forget about the actual writing, sometimes later. the list varies.

for it’s hidden in heartbeats, exhales and in the hope of open hands i researched how long it takes to get over a break-up but also what kind of fake plants to use plus the names of different composers so i could name the building after someone dead and relevant but not notoriously racist.

for warm water there’s a lot i could’ve researched but didn’t, like if skyr exists in the us, how detroit street naming works, or how baseball or football or basketball games work, and things i did research that i might end up scrapping like how to make che dau trang and whether one would store coconut cream in the fridge or in the cupboard and things that are completely irrelevant to what i wrote like whether the boiling a frog metaphor is true to nature (it’s not. apparently a frog is also gonna jump out of a pot of water if you build up the heat) and the meaning of the name aria.

in conclusion i just wing it, do whatever i want, especially with fic, with the exception of things that i feel actually need their proper research otherwise im doing a bad / irresponsible job as writer

If you could go back in time and give your younger self a piece of writing advice specific to you, what would it be?

just do it, just write, forget about the reception of your work, just go write whatever. also stop thinking original fiction is superior to fanfic, it’s not. newsflash: future you is also not writing original stuff but future you is a better writer bc guess what????? she actually writes things!!!! instead of thinking about writing or wishing she could write or hoping plot will one day fall from the heavens into her lap. so. write. ps. you’re bisexual

You say Niall has to be a main character; does that mean he has to be the POV or can it be from another's POV as long as he is still an important person in the story?

No, it can be any POV as long as Niall is part of the main focus, ie in the main pairing or the plot revolves around him in some way. Hope this helps!

Backstage, the tension presses around them all like a physical force. Lauren figures that only the girls can really feel it, underneath the emotions running high. It’s a weird feeling, knowing that she won’t be doing this every day anymore. That they essentially have to re-learn how they all fit together without the band.

It’s a lot, but Lauren settles into it, figures she’ll finish untangling it all later.

Normani wanders into her peripheral, fiddling with her sleeve and smiling at a tech guy. It’s the tilt of her mouth, the movements of her fingers, that have Lauren frowning.

“Hey, Mani,” Lauren calls, walking over towards her. She nudges Normani’s hand that was picking at the fabric of her sleeve with her own hand. “You all right?”

Normani hums, looks down at where Lauren’s fingers are tracing around her knuckles. “Yeah, it’s just, really weird, you know?”

Lauren nods, because she does know. “It is. But we’re gonna fuckin’ kill it. You’re gonna kill it. I’m gonna buy your record, remember?”

Laughing, Normani nods. “Yeah, I remember. And I’ll buy yours.”

“You better,” Lauren says, faux-threateningly, bumping their hips together. “I’ll know if you don’t.”

And Lauren definitely couldn’t know that, but she knows Normani, and she knows Normani will. Now it’s Lauren’s turn to pull at Normani’s sleeve, tugging them a bit further into the shadows behind all the sound equipment. Normani looks at her questioningly.

“What’s bugging you?” When Normani goes to argue, Lauren shakes her head. “Nuh-uh. Tell me what it is. I can tell there’s something up.”

It’s only after a long pause -- in which Normani’s eyes flit across Lauren’s face and their bodies angle closer together -- that Normani sighs. “We’ll keep in touch, right?”

“Of course,” Lauren replies immediately, quiet and sure. “We all have each other’s numbers, and we have the group chat as well. Is that it?”

Normani huffs, shakes her head. “No, I mean… like, for real. Like, we can still be…?” Normani makes a vague gesture with her hand.

Lauren considers that, for a second, tries to figure out exactly what Normani is asking her. The people that were lingering around them have trickled out, now, and they’re alone. That established, Lauren reaches forward, slowly, and traces her hand up and down Normani’s arm.

“Yeah, we can. If you want,” Lauren says carefully. “Like, we can call, and I’ll let you know when I’m in your orbit.”

Normani pulls her in for a hug and Lauren goes easily, fits their bodies together in a way that Lauren hopes will never stop being familiar.

“I love you. You know that. We’ll be okay.”

Nodding, Normani pulls back, and this time when she smiles, it’s genuine and full. And Lauren can’t help but lean in to kiss her cheek, skate her lips quickly over Normani’s own before pulling back.

“I know. I love you, too.” Normani breathes out, as if to expel the rest of her worries, and with that she starts walking away, hand holding onto Lauren’s own until the last possible second.

4. what’s a fic that changed the way you write?

most @magicalrocketships fics pointed me towards a direction of wanting to write fics about being accepted and appreciated and seen for who you are, and @queerlyalex‘s writing really helped inform the way i think about gender, particularly let it be lightning but also several from the asw prompts.

13. past tense or present tense?

always, always, always present tense. i don’t know if i even remember how to write past tense. i like the immediacy of present tense, especially because i like doing tight povs with stream-of-consciousness and real-time reactions, and i think present tense lends itself well to that kind of storytelling.

17. any crazy first-time fanfiction experiences?

when i was a teenager writing in a different fandom that i shall not name, i wrote an extremely terrible fic that i shall not describe, but part of the story involved a band writing their next album, and i actually wrote like 12 songs worth of lyrics and put together a little website for this album, and it was only ever intended to be seen by my handful of fic readers, but it started spreading and people thought it was real?? i mean, it was a shitty thrown-together tripod website, but it was also the 90s, and all websites looked like shitty thrown-together tripod websites. anyway, the band in question found out about it and had to explain to their fans that it wasn’t real, that it was part of a fanfiction. at the time, i thought that was awesome, but it is MORTIFYING in retrospect.

18. a detail you’re really proud of putting in one of your fics

i really love louis leaving the note for bucky on the whiteboard at the end of dust to dust. i love how that last scene contrasts the first scene. i also love louis stealing freddie’s doll to sleep with, what a sap. i like louis giving briana a spatula instead of a knife in this modern love. i was DETERMINED to work a spatula into that damn story for @sarcathlon and i can’t believe it actually worked.
