annabeth chase began working in one of new york's many starbucks on the fifth day of december in her junior year.
it was just about the last thing she'd wanted to do, particularly considering the upcoming finals that she definitely needed to study for, but as her father had pointed out, it would look good on just about any application. it wasn't exactly a selective sort of career, but if shitty jobs would get her into a decent school, annabeth wasn't about to turn one down.
percy jackson began working in the same one in september of the previous year.
and, quite conveniently, he was the one assigned to showing her the ropes.
it was not, necessarily, that annabeth had a grudge against him, but they were certainly in different circles, and from what she'd heard, he was trouble. he'd never been directly linked to anything, but there was something to him that made annabeth immediately uneasy.
he seemed charming enough, of course, and all of that was just fine. in fact, she was a little bit sympathetic. he had said, flushing, that he'd taken the job because he wanted to help out a bit, that his mom had worked so hard for him that she could never do anything for herself, and money was tight. he didn't say it in a self-pitying way, of course, which made it a tiny bit harder for her to even dislike him.
"so," he says finally, "why'd you apply? college?"
she feels immediately embarrassed that he's pegged her so quickly, and nods.
there is something so relaxed in his posture that seems so trademark barista she has to wonder whether she can quite master the job.
she's certainly not stupid, but she's learned that no matter how well you know body language, and no matter how well you can replicate it, to actually adopt it is an entirely different matter.
it seems easy enough, watching him, and she's yet to cause total disaster--in fact, the process seems ridiculously easy in comparison to the various lectures on customer service she'd had to attend over the course of two weeks--so once her time's up, she's feeling pretty confident in it all.
his teaching isn't exactly top-notch, naturally, and she's a tiny bit curious as to how much extra he's getting paid for this, but he's certainly not as intolerable as anticipated.
she learns how to make the holiday specialties sound infinitely more desirable than either of them find them to be and all of that, and somehow manages to get a bit of studying done during her break, and--as a matter of fact--becomes a very, very small bit interested in him.
he leaves early on the twentieth of the month, apologizing profusely to annabeth on his way out, and it's the first time she's been left without him supervising her.
she knows she can handle it, but the idea is still more or less mortifying. because to have never had a job is one thing, but to have had and lost in two weeks? well.
needless to say, she does perfectly well, and grades are okay--not as good as she'd have liked, though they rarely are--and she has a nice break.
her dad liked his presents, and apparently percy's mother had liked hers, and had even had a bit of time to work on her book.
meanwhile, annabeth did her very, very best to drop hints.
percy, of course, misses them all, and she puts up with it for far longer than she'd have liked.
she decides to tell him, flat-out tell him, on his birthday, barely short of a year since she'd applied. a couple botched pastries--perk number one of being a starbucks employee--in hand, lingering behind the counter.
"happy birthday."
he looked thrilled, though annabeth thought it may have been the pastries.
