In Which Community Confuddles Me
Today I decided to take a not-so-rare personal day and watch the entirety of Community season 3. This show was recommended to me by my TV soulmate Morgan, and like the other shows she has introduced me to (WATCH PARKS AND REC THURSDAY NIGHT 8:30 ON NBC) Community made me fall in love with it. This happens to me a lot. If you've never watched Community, it's about this group of seven community college students and the shenanigans they get up to. For a more comprehensive understanding of the show, utilize Google. The problem with Community, and mind you I have never had this problem with any other TV show or movie or book or real life situation, is that I cannot, I am PHYSICALLY INCAPABLE of making a decision as to WHO I SHIP. So naturally, le wild list appears! Pretty pictures included. 1. Jeff/Britta
This was the obvious ship. They had the whole hate-love thing going on, but I think the fact that Britta annoys me so much easily takes care of that ship NEVER becoming my OTP. Both awful people apart, together they just make me want to die. 2. Annie/Troy
They were pretty adorable for a while. But Annie's high school crush thing wasn't working for me. He hadn't noticed her before so why now? Psh. 3. Britta/Troy
This is one of my definite ships. They're never going to be OTP or anything but together they are a) less annoying than when Britta is with other people and b) kind of adorable. 4. Annie/Jeff
This ship gives me so many feels.
I don't buy "the whole he's too old for her it's creepy" thing. He's nicer when he's around her and she's not as uptight when she's around him and they're just perfect and I don't even know why I'm writing this post since obviously I like them better than anyone and to that I say THAT'S WHAT YOU THINK! 5. Annie/Abed AHA! Didn't see that one coming didja?
Setting aside the fact that Annie only seems attracted to Abed when he's dressed up as Han Solo or Batman, they are so cute together. Annie legitimately tries to understand him and she helped him find empathy, which I think in Abed's case is a super huge deal. Honestly speaking though, I would totally be committed to Annie/Jeff if it weren't for the time Annie/Abed made out. I just realized I spent a good two episodes worth of time writing this out and all I really made obvious was that I care too much about Annie considering she is fictional. That applies to a lot of my life, surprisingly enough. LEMON OUT!
You're welcome, Morgan!
It totally meant more to Jeff and even his actions later in the series show it, and his look in Romantic Expressionism? It's actually HOPEFUL, and it's like Annie didn't really consider the possibility of them before but then she gets drawn in with that look (she's surprised at first but then kinda melts into it) Which I guess explains why there's a good chunk of s1 fanfic that has Jeff secretly pining for Annie. Ah, those good times...
on the debate and The Look
And Jeff is just a guy, after all, who at this point is not used yet to deny himself something he wants, consequences be damned, especially when it's suddenly thrust upon him. He did have his wings a little cut off there when she pulled away, he kind of looked like a kid who'd just been given a taste of a forbidden candy he wanted so much and had it ripped away from him instantly.
on the first kiss
I wouldn't go that far. Actually, I think the kiss meant the same to them when it was happening. In the moment, Annie initiated the first peck, but even then he actually met her third way. He leant the last few inches to meet her, and the second kiss was a full on make out session. HE started it 'cause he WANTED to. Here he was wrecking his brains thinking whether he wants Britta or Slater, and here Annie was, so lovely, and familiar and non-complicated, and it felt right in the moment. He didn't even have to think. He wanted her in the moment and went for it. And judging by the whole episode, he didn't just want her in the moment. He kind of spent all day looking longingly her way, maybe not realising it. She was leaving, and he was sad, and he allowed himself to feel uncontrolled affection for her because he knew it wouldn't lead to anything, and he'll probably never see her again, so he wouldn't have to face his feelings after that night, so he let himself feel everything he'd been bottling up and saving for later measured use. And then he had a very stressful and emotionally confusing and tiring day, and just seeing her made him happy. She was the only one who listened to him. He opened up to her, she opened up to him, they felt closeness. He was so glad she stayed. He didn't have time to up his shields, so when she kissed him, he didn't even have to think. He just felt, so natural and right and close and understood. ...and then he remembered that it was Annie, the "teenager", his friend, someone Britta and Shirley would kill him for "defiling", and he panicked, bolted and as you put it "ran for the hills". And here is where their mutual path went two different ways: Annie spent all summer nursing her feelings, letting them develop into something deeper than the crush she'd had on him before. Jeff, on the other hand, spent his summer avoiding feelings and compartmentalizing them and putting them into a box with a massive lock on it because he thought he shouldn't be having those feelings, and since it was a one-time lapse of judgement they could move on from it without damage done. "He buried her like a shameful secret," so unfortunately the phase where everything they went through was completely mutual ended here :( Now every time Jeff feels a false sense of safety settle over him, Annie hits him with the Annie of it all, and he retreats further into his jerky shell, but when Annie wants to move on he pulls her back, and this is what their relationship is now :( I want it to be the night of Tranny dance forever, I watch the moments and it's just so much unguarded affection between them, or the times they were just sweet, not bitter...
on Jeff thinking the Tranny Dance kiss was random
I didn't approve of Annie's tactics, it's just not wise, but later I've come to love her for that, because she's able to do what I'd never have guts to do, to put her heart on the line, it's very brave, stupid yes, but also adorably brave, the reason Annie is capable of flustering and capturing someone like Jeff is because she's not logical and tactical, she's a power of nature, can't be predicted and overruled and you can't really protect yourself from it, it's only temporary, so Jeff giving in is just a matter of time
