you claim to be a zuko book 1 hair apologist. give us the reasons why its valid (-shortkingzuko)
@shortkingzuko FINALLY SOMEONE ASKS.
1- Character design; It’s sorta off putting right? It masks his age, makes him seem older and more intimidating. This gives zuko’s back story more punch; you see how he use to be, use to LOOK like. it’s jarring its GOOD. It gives a great contrast to how he looks later as he grows in the series.
2- Story implications; we see that long hair is the norm for fire nation, long hair has significance. Zuko is nearly bald but NOT. he still has a patch of his long hair instead of cutting it off. He’s still heavily attached to who he was. cutting his hair was a show of zuko trying to cut ties with who he was. yet he still had that patch of hair, he can’t totally remove his past from himself. It provides both character and world depth.
3- headcannon shit; I think some of zuko’s hair was burnt off after the “agni kai” and for healing, part of his head had to be shaved. His hair kept getting into his wound, but cutting your hair has such implications in the fire nation. so phoenix tail hair is the best compromise.
4- it’s funny; picture it when it’s down. picture it when he was the blue spirit in book 1. it was so long. just a long hair in a single patch.
Could I get a young Ozai?
the difference is extraordinary.

I WANNA BE A HAKOWBOY BABBBBYYYYY
Simp anon here! Just wanted to check in, say hi and ask your opinion on how they made Pakku stop being sexist. Bc honestly I think it was done rly badly and people don't talk about it enough, but maybe I'm missing something? Like, he never realized his sexism was wrong (at least on camera), he was just sad he lost his wife-to-be! Without that necklace katara would still have been refused lessons despite her fighting capabilities.
Hey Simp anon (the first?)!! good to hear from you! and i AGREE!!! It’s no secret they fucked up Pakku a lot. He showed no growth or realization that his previous mindset/ideals were wrong. Katara showed a lot of talent for someone SELF TAUGHT USING ONE (1) SCROLL. She went toe to toe with a master, and Pakku was too stubborn and sexist to admit it. In my opinion; he never grew out of his sexism, he just became less vocal about it because he was satisfied with the possibility of meeting Gran-Gran.
fuck cannon Pakku.
And you know what, it could have been a really good episode, Pakku tossing out his sexism. Something similar to Sokka. This episode would happen before the series finale, of course.
Picture when Pakku finds the necklace, he asks to see Gran-Gran, and Aang says only if he teaches Katara waterbending. Pakku reluctantly agrees, and he joins them on Appa (who sneezes on him, because sexists get sneezed on). They travel back to the Southern Water Tribe, Appa flying low to the water for the three benders to train. Throughout training, Pakku realizes how much better a student Katara is compared to his others. Unlike Aang, she isn’t a natural, but she puts in the effort. He wakes up at night to her training.
He gets her to pause, and they talk, tense with katara throwing sharp jabs when she feels like it. She says something about Gran-Gran not wanting to marry Pakku, which causes Pakku to open up on what happened between them.
Katara would blow up at him and refuse to talk to him. BUT YOU KNOW WHO DOES??
SOKKA.
Sokka was awake, and he waits until Katara is asleep to talk to Pakku. He talks about his own sexism, and he talks about suki and the other warriors. It helps Pakku come to grips that his views are harmful. He reflects on what happened with Gran-Gran, and before they reach the Water tribe, Katara saves his ass in a fight. This makes him cave in, and he apologizes to her. He says that Katara reminds him of his lost love, and he now sees why she chose to run away. He says that Katara has become a master, that he didn’t want to admit it before, but he realizes now that there's no reason not too. And He says that he’s glad that the Avatar has one of the finest waterbenders as a teacher.
When they reach the southern tribe, Pakku talks to Gran-Gran. They reconcile, and Gran-Gran says that she’s willing to welcome him back into her life, because Katara told her that he’s changed for the better.
And MAYBE they date, or maybe they just become friends.
Are the betrothal necklaces not a Northern water tribe thing, not Southern? I'm kinda confused
Hey Anon!
So what we know from the show: Gran gran is from the Northern water tribe, and Pakku did give her a betrothal necklace. However, we know that Hakoda didn’t make one for Kya. But it’s implied Aang made one for katara, I think??
So it seems betrothal necklaces are a southern water tribe custom, that the southern water tribe knows about? But it’s unclear if they practice it.
