The magic corrupting Steve's processor vanishes and suddenly his functional programming picks up the data error.  A quick, unconscious scan and reset to previous functions sets him straight.  In the next several nanokliks, the erroneous data it created is sifted through and corrected.

It's a bit like waking up from a dream.  A moment before, he'd been holding his son.  And now he was holding...
