Don was about to respond, when Cassie walked up to the two of them, and he happily took the excuse to not have to field more compliments. He didn’t really understand the need. At least not from someone who knew him well, like Dina. He hadn’t done anything amazing yet. There wasn’t a real reason to be amazed.
“Hi baby.” Cassie smiled warmly at Don, before struggling to be as friendly to the blonde “Hey Dina, are you enjoying the party?”
“It’s a great party Cassandra. You really have a knack for this like your mother” Dina smiled at his fiance.
“Thank you, I’m glad it’s going well.” Don knew Cassie had a complicated relationship with how she felt about Dina. She didn’t really dislike her in any case, but the woman was barely 5 years older than she was, and was dating her father. She was trying her best to be welcoming, but he supposed it would be a little jarring no matter what. The fact that Don and the Caliente sisters had gone to high school together and were all quite close did not help. He assumed it just reminded her exactly how young her father’s new girlfriend really was.
“Well, I see Nina over there, waving me down! I’ll see you guys a bit later” Dina smiled again, just for good measure, before wandering off toward Don’s kitchen.
At that, Don pulled his future wife into a close hug, kissing her forehead, “it really is a good party babe. You outdid yourself.”
“I’m really happy you’re enjoying it,” she paused, letting out a sigh of relief, “contrary to what Dina thinks, my mother was far better at this sort of thing…”
“Mmm” he nuzzled the top of her head, before pulling away, “you’re doing fine, love.”
Don wandered around the party in his flat, talking with all the people he would consider friends. Although he wasn’t sure why Cassie had invited Darren. He barely knew the man. Cassie had organized the entire party for him, which he greatly appreciated. She’d even invited Nina and Dina, which had slightly surprised him. But Darren? Just because they’d spoken a few times, and he lived down the street? The man and him had nothing in common.
He had seen the other man at a few of the goth parties though, so maybe Cassie knew him as well. That could be why she’d invited him too. Since most of the people here were people she didn’t know well, and she was shyer than most. He supposed it was only fair that she invite a few people to talk to so she wouldn’t have to spend all her time following him around.
Honestly, she’d done a wonderful job. Everyone he considered a friend was here, as well as her entire family. The music playlist was excellent, though she’d admitted to him earlier that she hadn’t had a clue, and she’d asked Alex to pick out the music, and the food seemed to be popular. He wasn’t sure who Cassie had ordered from though.
Unfortunately, it was hard to enjoy a party, when the previous weeks had been so exhausting. He’d spent two whole weeks with Cassie over the winter, and they’d definitely had him make up for it since. He needed to get all his resident hours finished and he had made a personal goal to have it happen before the wedding. Don was 100% sure that Mortimer still didn’t like him much. He certainly put up with him, and was willing to ‘let’ Cassie marry him, but he hadn’t been very subtle in letting him know that there were better options out there for his daughter. Like Don wasn’t aware of that already.
Cassie, of course, had tried to assuage his fears, and told him not to worry. That her father didn’t like any of the boys she’d ever dated, and that he’d come around. He was just afraid Don wouldn’t be able to ‘take care of her properly’. So Don had decided he needed to be a “real” doctor before he married Cassie, just to make a point. And when he’d brought it up at a dinner one night, Mortimer had had no snide comment for once.
But now, he was just tired. He was happy it was over, and that he was going to have relatively normal hours once again, and that all his friends were here celebrating his victory, and that he was going to be marrying the perfect woman, and that her father would have nothing to say about it. But he was also really really tired.
Okay now it’s time for me to get emotional about the video
So I don’t know if anyone completely understands how important it is to me that I’m now a big brother. Everyone in my family, from my great-grandparents on down through the generations and probably even further back in the years, has had at least one sibling. Growing up as the ONLY only-child was always something that kinda bothered me, but something that I just kinda ignored because I was a kid who didn’t understand his own feelings. Didn’t fully comprehend things. About a year or two ago I realized something that bothered me most about being an only child; it wasn’t that I never had someone as a kid to play with, but it was that I’d never get to enjoy being an uncle like everyone else had the ability to. I have a cousin who I’m really close to and we’ve kinda come to the agreement that I’m going to be a psuedo-uncle to her children when she has them and visa versa, but that’s not the same. But I get to be a legitimate uncle now. I’ll eventually be told that I have a beautiful daughter when I take my sis to the mall or a concert and I’m already preparing to correct them. I’ll get to see her grow up and I’ll try to be around when she starts dating whoever she decides to date. I’ll put on an act as the big, tough, Marine brother but I’ll support her through anything. I’ll support her significant other. I’ll try to be the best brother I can be.
It’s also a little bittersweet that my great-grandpa just died recently too. One life ends as another begins. One old and creaky tree falls as a small sapling rises from the ground.
Okay, I’m done now. Now excuse me while I go cry tears of joy and sadness.
what's a Wellington video and why is it so important
omg I got this and literally 10 other messages asking me if I ship Larry all at once lmao 😂, okay so:
firstly, no I don’t ship Larry. I don’t think that any of them are in romantic relationships with each other (obviously I don’t care if others have different opinions) I just like them all as good close friends and all that good stuff.
second, the Wellington video is a really low quality video of Harry and Louis hanging out together a bar in Wellington, NZ a couple of years ago (apparently someone has an HQ video now so ppl are kind of freaking out). a lot of people think they kissed in the video or that it’s proof of their relationship (I personally don’t see that but c’est la vie). if you google “wellington video” I’m sure it’ll come up for you 😊
in regard to my last read more yesterday i missed my bus by like two minutes and they only come every half hour so he took the next bus to the exchange and waited with me and when i saw his bus he said "there are other buses" and sat with me until my bus got there
