Antakshari 101

Okay, okay I know what you’re thinking. The word “Antakshari” is all you need to send yourself back to years of over-enthusiastic Aunties and Uncles, belting out Kishor Kumar songs and Sholay tunes as if their lives depended on it.

And besides the random victories of your Dadi  who was actually there when those songs were relevant, you spent most of your time probably wondering when a song you knew would finally surface!

If you’re anything like us at Antakshri FM, you know that Bollywood songs have played as much a part in your life as they did for your parents! What girl didn't grow up hoping that she’d eventually grow out of her awkward phase like Anjali from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, find her DDLJ-esque Raj, and dance off into the sunset with Rahul from Dil Toh Pagal Hai?

And what guy didn’t want achieve the Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gum “Rohan” makeover, have moves like Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’s Rohit, and a motorcycle as edgy as Kabir’s from Dhoom?

From the movie nights, to the singing and dancing performances there’s nobody out there that knows Bollywood better than you…right? Ok, we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Before we tell you how to utilize all those years of accumulated music knowledge, here’s a little Antakshari 101! (TL;DR: it's the Indian version of that song battle they played in Pitch Perfect)

The original game of Antakshari is an old family game and the best known way to kill awkward silences all over Indian sub-continent. Based around popular Bollywood songs, the game is played with two or more teams, with the first singing two lines from any song they choose. The next team then uses the last Hindi letter sung and start singing a new song, starting with that same letter. If the wrong letter is used or a team takes too long, the other team automatically wins! And then its time to pass around the chai.
