i don't think this author knows about the child mortality graph.

like. I understand that anthropology is the cultural relativity discipline, that half the point and half the job is going, "okay, these people believe stuff that we don't, it makes sense within their cultural context, let's treat it with the respect we'd give any other idea (and take our own ideas apart from the same point of view)". I understand that. I get that there are no sacred cows in anth - unless you're in India- I get it.

But you cannot look at this goddamn graph:

From the perspective of medical anthropology, we might also call all healers “ethno-healers” who practice local health knowledge about disease, illness, and health—whether they are Tibetan amchis or American cardiovascular surgeons.

We could do that, but no one does that because that's stupid-- and bluntly kind of dangerous?

It's one thing to talk about ethnocentric biases in medicine and try to take apart, you know, "these practices have cultural signifiers to you that they don't have to people from other cultures" with corollaries like "maybe don't go full in White Coat Blue Gloves doctor on the lower-class black woman from Tuskegee and expect her to trust you" and "placebos work better if they're using cultural signifiers from the patient's culture" and such

It's another thing to compare a global group project that has saved the lives of millions of people, to local practices which are by and large "the best we could do with what we had at the time"

or is an Indian immigrant cardiovascular surgeon an "ethno-healer" now

...I'm genuinely considering making an academic complaint against anth class from hell professor, for a very stupid reason.

.....I understand why "draw your kinship chart/family tree and describe it using these terms we learned about in anth class" is a reasonable assignment to give. If you are living in the mythical fairyland where everyone has a decent enough relationship with their immediate family that thinking about them isn't painful or triggering.

I'm "just" going to email the professor about it, I think, but fuck, I want to bite people.

ughhhhh, Anth Class From Hell has one last nasty turd for me before we leave

We're doing a unit on the anthropology of health and like... they're talking about how amchis, aka ~traditional healers~ in the Tibet/Kashmir border region, are having their way of life die because of Westernization, how it's impossible to be an amchi anymore because you have to sell your wares instead of just getting supported by the community, and presenting it as a success story that Western nonprofits are financially supporting these folks/ altmed people are adopting amchis' practices

and like.

look I have a lot of complicated feelings about 'alternative' medicine, I am fully aware that I'm not going to be sympathetic to some people I probably should be sympathetic to because of that. the book is presenting these guys' techniques as being A Thing That Genuinely Works and if it does then maybe, mayyyybe I'm being a bit harsh.

but all I can think about is how much of that sweet sweet NGO money could go towards getting people vaccines and birth control and medical care that actually works.

Update on the Anth Class From Hell situation:

I sent the professor an email with an article written by a teacher about why you should, perhaps, not assign family trees as classwork. I specifically pointed out that they exclude students from "traumatic or non-traditional homes".

Professor emails me back, and the ENTIRETY of what she said is "I do consider students from non-traditional homes"

NO, YOU DON'T. NO, YOU DON'T???? IF YOU DID, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE MADE THIS A REQUIRED UNIT EXAM QUESTION???????
