Plant of the Day
Wednesday 19 July 2017
This annual flowering meadow at the East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden, Norfolk, was magical. The major species providing the display were the blue flowered Centaurea cyanus (cornflower), the glowing golden flowers of Chrysanthemum segetum (corn marigold, golden cornflower, guild weed, yellow daisy, yellow ox-eye) and highlights of white blooms from Anthemis austriaca (white corn chamomile). This display requires disturbed open ground and is probably sown annually.
Jill Raggett
Anthemis arvensis, Asteraceae
I took these photos of corn chamomile, or mayweed in bloom at the height of last summer here in Scotland, on the banks of the river Clyde, and I can’t wait to see every green corner covered in wildflowers again.
This annual plant is native to most of Europe, North Africa and Western Asia, but also commonly used as an ornamental in flower beds. Historically, It has also been used in folk medicine due to its antipyretic properties.
Here you can see my post about the somewhat similar wild chamomile, Matricaria discoidea.
