Making a real statement in a summer container is Brugmansia (angel’s trumpet). This tender evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub is grown for its bold, trumpet-shaped flowers, which are deliciously scented. Although these plants are not fully hardy, they can be placed outdoors during the frost-free summer months. Please remember they are toxic.

The hardy annual Lathyrus odoratus (sweetpeas) needs the constant tying-in of stems, removal of tendrils if grown for competition and picking of flowers to promote more blooms. But all the hard work is worthwhile for a bunch of scented, colourful sweetpea flowers. Best wishes to all the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) students who completed their Master of Horticulture (MHort) practical examination at RHS Wisley Garden over the past two days, I enjoyed talking to you and these sweetpeas are for you - I wish I could send the scent as well!

Here tender herbaceous perennial Canna ‘Phasion’ (Indian shot) has been used as part of a tropically inspired border. The rhizomes should be planted shallowly, just covering them with compost, but making sure that any new shoots are above soil level. The upright foliage is variously striped in green, purple, orange and pink, creating a dramatic effect which is further added to when the orange flowers appear. The contrasting dark foliage in the back ground is Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace' (elder).

This annual flowering meadow at the East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden, Norfolk, was magical. The major species providing the display were the blue flowered Centaurea cyanus (cornflower), the glowing golden flowers of Chrysanthemum segetum (corn marigold, golden cornflower, guild weed, yellow daisy, yellow ox-eye) and highlights of white blooms from Anthemis austriaca (white corn chamomile). This display requires disturbed open ground and is probably sown annually.
