I always see these posts about “imagine if a twelve year old read the sex scenes in YA”. I don’t have to imagine. I like to think I’ve matured from 2017 me, who picked up the acotar series because of course twelve year old me thought it sounded interesting, plus I’d just started reading ToG and still liked it back then. It was so hard for my brain to comprehend what I was reading when it came to Chapter 55, all I knew was that I thought he was hurting her. It really warped my view on sex, up until my school gave well educated classes on the subject. It’s why the subject of sex scenes in YA really makes me upset, because I do know what it’s like for a young child to read it, and I do know how it feels to try and understand when you really don’t. It’s not SJM’s fault that the books were poorly marketed regardless, but she did know that these books were in the YA category, which ranges from 12-18. She still wrote graphic sex scenes for the younger side of YA, despite knowing there was a chance they would read it. And that is one of the main reasons I’m an anti
