I know the tumblr side of the kotlc fandom likes Fitz for whatever reason, but I really don’t like him guys. Please don’t stop interacting or anything if you disagree like I won’t be meant to you about it we can have different opinions I promise, but I just don’t like him. He’s not a bad person or anything, like I totally get being upset when people say he’s worse than Alvar or whatever, like yeah, he’s a teenager and he’s doing his best out here. But I’m gonna be so honest, he’s just boring to me.
I think part of the problem isn’t even Fitz himself but rather Sophie being the narrator. Since, from the moment this man is introduced, because we’re seeing this out of Sophie’s eyes, Fitz is no longer a character, but rather a love interest. Everytime Fitz is on the page we have to hear about his dazzling good looks and his TEAL EYES. Girl I am so sorry but please stfu about those TEAL EYES!!! All of you have some shade of blue eyes, Fitz is not that special, I don’t have to hear about it every time he comes on page!
This could also be a personal issue with hearing about male love interests as well since I did first read these books while convincing myself I was straight and like, I gotta say, whenever the main character was thirsting after a male love interest I would be kinda uncomfortable.
But that’s also why I think that her romance with Keefe is written better since she isn’t immediately aware of her feelings for him, so we actually get to see him as a character first and not just a love interest. Fitz feels love interest first, character second, while Keefe is character first, love interest second. Fitz feels like he should be a satire of every male love interest in YA fantasy, but he’s weirdly not and the narrative actually takes him seriously.
Like yes, Fitz does get to develop a bit more after being introduced as a love interest but like really not much as some of the other characters. As far as seeing a more human (or elf I guess) side of him, we do get to see his anger issues in book two. Which honestly some people get so mad at him for, but I really don’t, his father was in the Princess Bride mostly dead mode I get it, he’s not going to be the most pleasant person. But I’ll be so real, Fitz isn’t interesting when bad stuff isn’t happening. Like the other characters feel like they have personalities to them regardless of them getting hit with all the crap from the plot, but Fitz kind of feels like card board. Like what does he have? He’s rich, he’s our perfect wonder boy, and he has anger issues when shit goes down sometimes.
Like I’m sorry but I don’t understand the appeal. Again I don’t usually hold the anger thing against him, but the time that I do is Legacy because, my man, I understand that you’re upset about the matchmaking thing. With the way you were raised, you’ve obviously been taught to place a lot of value on it. You’re a Vacker. But Sophie had absolutely no control over that and it was so unfair to take that all out on her. But again, I don’t hold that against him too too much since he’s under a lot of stress and also a teen and all that. But like, my man, I know you don’t want to be an outcast but have you seen who you’re hanging out with?! At that point the Alvar thing had already happened, people already don’t trust your family. How much worse could you possibly make it. Also, you need to unlearn this stuff, the matchmaking system is ingrained into your society, but it is also a tool of oppression.
Also, like maybe the Alvar arc would have been more interesting for Fitz’s character if we hadn’t already done it before with Keefe. Like we already did this whole betrayal and now we don’t trust your family thing with Keefe. Like, I’m sorry you don’t want to be out casted Fitz, but like welcome to the club. You’re working with the black swan, you’re a bunch of misfits, get with it!!! You stupid tropey YA pretty boy love interest man!!!
Sophie and Keefe finally getting together feels far more earned because we’ve waited sooooo long for Sophie to even realize she likes him. Meanwhile, the Fitz thing was stuck in will they won’t they he’ll for soooo long. Which yes, Sokeefe was too, but also Sokeefe didn’t force us to keep thinking about it, it just kind of happened naturally. Where as with Sofitz every time he comes onto the page we have to hear about his dazzling TEAL EYES!!! Like girl, either make a move or don’t m, stop taking up the page with this for like seven books!!! In conclusion, Fitz annoys me deeply.
