and this question is meant sincerely. what could this panther do to be more “feminine”? how many octaves does she have to raise her roar for you to hear her as a female? does it matter when she’s chasing you at full speed?
is she less violent with less melanated fur or skin? is she more violent the darker she is? does it change her existence as a female panther? does it change how she scales a tree in search of prey? does it change her love for her cubs, or the way she loved her mother when she was a cub? does it change the sharpness of her canines?
do you look at her and see her as a female? or do you see her as a panther first, with her femaleness being secondary?
and why would a human be different?
why would a human female be stereotyped the instant she’s perceived? why does her skin correlate to violence or docility? why is she female before she is human? why is her existence inherently sexual, inherently meant for consumption?
it doesn’t have to be this way.

HPHM: What kind of [...]dere is David Jager Denneth?
Some people told me that my MC from HPHM is a tsundere, i talked in private with them trying to dismantle this idea of labelling characters.
(also i was bored and wasting time on thinking about what race should be/have my Hero of Ferelden from Dragon Age: Origins and i’m like dying inside because i can’t decide i want a daelish elf but it will force me to make a boring warrior run only for the sake of meeting Merrill..basically >.<)
I decided to copy-paste the meaning of the various kinds in the “dere’s spectrum of personalities”(or whatever should be written) and then explain why David can’t be labelled like that:
1. Bakadere
The Bakadere (ばかデレ) typically refers to a character who is very clumsy and stupid. For the most part, they’re very innocent and sweet, but their stupidity outshines their other attributes.
The word is a compound of Baka (ばか) which means stupid or moron and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
Why David is not a Bakadere? well we’re talking about the outside personality(the Baka/idiot/clumsy part) well, thanks to David’s background, we know that he studied human transmutations when he was like 10, he was trained by his father, in a very brutal way with the purpose to be Jacob’s sidekick(because Daddy thinks that Jacob is the most perfect human ever born...), i don’t know if it exists the opposite of Bakadere...something like Edge-dere(like someone constantly aware of where he is and always in a preventive guard/defence mode, verbally and physically).
2. Bodere
The Bodere (ボデレ) typically refers to a character who is usually shy around those they’re infatuated with, which then results in violence. Bodere types don’t know how to handle their embarrassment and use their fists instead of their words.
David is not violent to friends or Love Interest, actually, he is the quite the opposite, sometimes he just hugs out of nothing, The End. (and if he is violent, usually is towards someone who truly hates or feels disgusted)
3.Byoukidere
The Byoukidere (病気デレ) typically refers to a character who is kind and gentle at heart but has a serious illness. They might be confined to a hospital bed, or just simply weak and frail.
This word is a compound of Byouki (びょうき / 病気) which means sick and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
David is ALWAYS in the hospital wing for some reasons, from losing his left arm because the chimaera, from some crazy acrobatics with the broom, or some spell training went wrong, nothing is serious enough to be confined to a hospital bed, nor he is weak or frail, he is quite active and healthy even with an automail/metallic left arm.
4.Dandere
The Dandere (だんデレ) typically refers to a character who is often silent and keeps to themselves. It may be due to shyness or just because they’re the quiet type. However, when alone with the person they are attracted to, they usually come out of their shell and become more loving.
This word is a compound of Danmari (だんまり) which means silent and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
This is the closest thing David may be(for now at least, i didn’t plan this post nor i’m checking what comes after this definition XD). David is not really shy, he only talks the right amount, not too much during lessons and enough to eat his meals while it’s still warm.
5.Darudere
The Darudere (ダルデレ) typically refers to a character who is often very lazy and dull. They would rather sit around and show no emotion towards anyone, including their love interest.
This word is a compound of Darui (ダルい) which means sluggish and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
David is not lazy, he trains in the morning before everyone wakes up. If he is lazy about something, is probably because he doesn’t care at all and David shows emotions in general...maybe you can’t notice them on his scarred face, but you can clearly see them in his actions.
6.Deredere
The Deredere (デレデレ) typically refers to a character who is completely kind, happy, and energetic. No matter what may happen, they quickly revert to their cheerful self.
This may be the only character type that doesn’t have any abbreviation with the base Deredere (デレデレ) word, although the definition isn’t simply lovey-dovey like the other types.
David is too much full of angst and family-drama to quickly be cheerful after some sad/bad/tragic event happened, he treats the younger students with kindness and with some “unasked scary smile”(because his scars) even when he is bloody outraged.
7.Hajidere
The Hajidere (はじデレ) typically refers to a character who is very nervous and embarrassed around their crush. They will easily blush near their love interest, and might even faint from being so bashful.
This word is a compound of Haji (はじ / 恥) which means embarrassment and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
David had this phase during the dates with Penny, but more nervous/paranoid about the worst-case scenario rather than embarrassed but soon he had some certainty about Penny’s feelings, everything was okay.
8.Himedere
The Himedere (ひめデレ) typically refers to a character who wishes to be treated like a princess by the person she loves, even if they aren’t royalty in actuality.
This word is a compound of Hime (ひめ / 姫) which means princess and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
David?A princess? he hates formalities, he hates everything related to being noble (even the idea of being “pureblood” makes him sick) he only wants to be treated nicely
9.Hinedere
The Hinedere (ひねデレ) typically refers to characters who have cynical world views, are cold-hearted, and highly arrogant. However, deep down they have a soft side that may reveal itself after their love interest breaks through.
Based on what I can find, this word seems to be a compound of Hine (ひね) which means twist (Google Translate?) and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
Here another close one to David, even closer than Dandere, and in general is like Auror!David and Cursebreaker!David(and “Planewalker!David” like a guy who goes around across the multiverse...like DragonAge!David, Witcher!David) the wrong part is, the cold-hearted(he will be arrogant but in an “i’m sound arrogant but the truth is, i know a lot about this”), David is or will be cynical, mostly because he didn’t achieve nothing from letting Rakepick/Fenrir Greyback live, so he sticks with the idea that sometimes some bad guys must die, even if society doesn’t like it the idea of only one person ignoring their laws.
10.Kamidere
The Kamidere (かみデレ) typically refers to a character with a god complex. They’re highly arrogant and proud and aren’t afraid to speak their minds and show everyone how right they are.
This word is a compound of Kami (かみ / 神) which means God and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
David has a hero complex thanks to his needy friends(also thanks to authorities neglecting Hogwarts’problems), he thinks that he the only one who can fix big problems, and he fixes them because he is the only one strong enough to do it. Not truly a full hero complex, just a consequence of events who made him think in this way. He speaks his mind because no one does, it’s more an “i’m the adult here(even if i’m one of the many underage students) so I’ll deal with the other adults!” kind of thing.
11.Kanedere
The Kanedere (かねデレ) typically refers to a character who is attracted to others with money or status. They’re the anime and manga equivalent of a gold digger.
This word is a compound of Kane (かね / 金) which means money and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
...seriously? This thing exists? David likes simple things, once he has a house, a stable income, a wife, food and a family he would be happy even living in the lowest class of society, in cursebreaker!AU he chooses to leave GB living like a travelling cursebreaker(usually with Penny) for the sake of stay away from useless authorities(like Hogwarts’ teachers and Ministry of Magic), he chooses to basically live by the day(mostly) because he knows that his happiness is not found in success or money, or being famous, but in sharing small happy moments every day, either playing with some kids in Brasil or helping Médecins Sans Frontières just because during his journeys meet them. So yeah David is not a kanedere.
12.Kuudere
The Kuudere (クーデレ), sometimes written Coodere or Kūdere, type refers to a character who is often cold, blunt, and cynical. They may seem very emotionless on the outside, but on the inside, they’re very caring — at least when it comes to the ones they love.
This word is a compound of Cool (クール) and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
This is actually the very first impression of every young student while they’re about to approach Prefect!David and you can say a sub-phase lived by David...i mean is not wrong thinking that a prefect takes care of their peers, with the Fifth Year and the portrait curse, David is quite on an edge and stressed, so he tries to teach to young students a lot of defensive spells, every time he is not busy with Vault-stuff.
13.Mayadere
The Mayadere (まやデレ) typically refers to a character who is often a dangerous antagonist of a series but switches sides after falling in love with another character. The character may remain deadly and unpredictable for the protagonist or other main character in the Anime or Manga.
David is Chaotic-Good in Hogwarts, falling for Penny is only one of the main reasons to don’t go full Chaotic-Neutral/Anarchy. So David always is on the good side, in cursebreaker!AU he still Chaotic Good but in a “some evil don’t deserve to live” way.
14.Nyandere
The Nyandere (ニャンデレ) typically refers to a character who has many cat-like attributes. Often times they add “Nyan” in their sentences. They might even be part cat and part human. See also: Nekomimi.
The word is a compound of Nyan (ニャン) which is a Japanese onomatopoeia for a cat sound, and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
Just no. David is the embodiment of many inside-jokes related to dogs, not cats...so NO.
15.Oujidere
The Oujidere (おうじデレ) typically refers to a character who wishes to be treated like a prince by the person he loves, even if they aren’t royalty in actuality. This word is a compound of Ouji (おうじ / 王子) which means prince and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
In this case, David wants to treat Penny like a noble, but with two kisses and a hug, you made him happy for a whole day. So David treats people he cares about like royalty but without wanting to be treated like this.
16.Sadodere
The Sadodere (さどデレ) typically refers to a character who loves to toy with their love interest’s emotions. They take pleasure in manipulating people’s feelings.
This word is a compound of Sado (さど), taken from sadomasochistic, and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
Nope! David is honest, he says what’s in his mind, the only kind of manipulation is to his enemies, like make them believe that he is dying in front of them for the fun of a surprise attack, or humiliating them by acting like it’s super easy to defeat them
17. Shundere
The Shundere (しゅんデレ) typically refers to characters who are sad and very depressed. While a full smile on their face might be out of the question, their love interest can help them open up and feel accepted.
During his rant during year fourth against Dumbledore near the Sleepwalking Vault, he has a moment where he was angrily sad and depressed, but who wouldn’t? 12 students were eaten alive by a giant spider and the reason is that something related to him(or Jacob or R) triggered the Curse! but i don’t think it counts as being Shundere...David’s kind of depression was mostly repressed rage and disappointment in the whole magical society(Hogwarts and Ministry of Magic)
18. Tsundere
The Tsundere (ツンデレ) type is possibly one of the most popular or simply most used character types in anime and manga. This type refers to a character who treats the one they love poorly. Sometimes this is because they started out hating them and eventually loves them as the series goes on, and sometimes it’s because that’s the only way they know how to react.
The only kind of person who David treats poorly are the ones who are mean to him first(Merula, Ismelda, Goth!Bea, while with Snape is basically a turf war, with some violent implications), and it’s important to say it: He doesn’t love them(exception for Bea, but he only answers to every insult she says to him as a form of respect and love, like she is at least worthy of talking to him, while with Ismelda before her side-quest is more about trying to make her smile with a pun when he is in the mood to do that, so actually is cold and mean to Merula only). His soft side is always exposed if you keep being nice to him, maybe he looks stressed or bored but he never said no to people who are nice to him.
19.Undere
The Undere (ウンデレ) typically refers to a character who says yes to pretty much everything the one they love says. They agree as much as possible to become as close as they can to their love interest.
This word is a compound of Un (ウン) which is a short way Japanese people say Yes and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
David actually prefers to debate with Penny, trying to understand her point of view on her ideas and work on it to find an equal ground/agreement. He also dislikes this thing, because at that point what’s the point of having someone near if they’re constantly agreeing without giving a different perspective and by extensions helping you to figure out different solutions to a single problem??
20.Utsudere
The Utsudere (うつデレ) typically refers to a character who is often sad and depressed. There is a reason for the character’s despair such as being bullied at school. Even if their life improves, they are often wary of other characters’ motives.
This word is a compound of Utsu (うつ / 鬱) which means depression and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
David is depressed for other reasons, I the writer may be an Utsudere, David is most like depressed and annoyed by R, Rakepick, Jacob, His family, Penny’s mother(she knew David’s mother and so she has some prejudice about David), Merula, Snape, Dumbledore, Percy, Tonks&Tulip(because they think that everything will be solved by going to Zonko’s, thanks JC for making mono-dimensional characters). David channels his sad feelings in anger and rage, he is not proud of it, but he doesn’t like crying and whining in the artefact room(like Ben).
21.Yandere
The Yandere (ヤンデレ) typically refers to a character who starts out nice and sweet but eventually becomes dark and obsessive over the one they love. They become stalkers and use violence on, and possibly even murder, any person who gets close to their love interest — even if they’re too shy to simply speak with that person they have a crush on.
This word is a portmanteau of Yanderu (やんでる) which means to be mentally or emotionally ill and Deredere (デレデレ) which means lovey-dovey.
David has some traits of yandere, this outside personality doesn’t match(entirely), but he is quite overprotective thanks to his hero complex, he fights his obsessions to check on his friends and mostly Penny, he has some outburst of cold rage when someone is trying to do something inappropriate to her, but he fights that attitude by teaching Penny some martial arts, so he can ease his paranoid thoughts...
So yeah, in the end, David is partially some of these various -dere things but at the same time, he (technically) doesn’t have all the traits of these personalities. The End(hope you liked this text wall, see you around ^^)
