Art Ask Game: what do you love getting compliments about & a piece from this year that you’re really proud of?

What do you love getting compliments about? Atmosphere and characterization! I love feeling like I've been able to successfully put someone in a place, and that the people I draw feel like distinct and real people.

A piece from this year that you’re really proud of? I've realized that since I launched my comic in January, outside of commissions I haven't done any drawing that ISN'T the comic. So I don't have a big specific piece I'm really proud of. But I am proud of my comic so far. I just finished page 41 today, and surpassing 40 pages of something always feels like a nice milestone for me.

4. What do they consider to be each other’s most annoying habits?

Even though Rose was in the military for years, she never learned how to really fold shirts and put them away correctly. She just shoved the laundry packages in her footlocker and grabbed clean clothes from there. Drives Kaidan up the metaphorical wall.

Rose wishes that Kaidan would stop tracking mud in from outside. That’s why they have a mudroom, so the outdoors stays outdoors and not over the clean tile/hardwood.

8. Do either of them get jealous?

Yes.

When Rose got the message from Kaidan post-Horizon she almost left a biotic-charged dent in the console. Because it hadn’t been two years to her and the night they had on the way to Ilos was still fresh in her mind.

When Kaidan found out that Rose and Garrus were seeing each other romantically. He thought he’d moved on from Rose when he thought she was dead and then when she was working for Cerberus. He thought that right up until Rose visited him in Huerta and they had a long and honest conversation with each other with no ‘cheating’ thrown out.

Even then it took a few months of relationship counseling for them to get on the same page with what they wanted out of the relationship.

14. Do they have a morning routine? Describe it if you’d like to.

Yes! They both are used to early mornings due to being career Alliance, so they’re always up before 7am (despite the fact that as an Admiral, Rose can set her own hours and therefore sleep-in if she wanted to).

Rose starts with her daily PT routine to help with lingering stiffness and mobility. Then it’s a shower and down to the kitchen to make breakfast. After loading the dishwasher, it’s off to Alliance HQ for whatever’s on her schedule for the day.

Kaidan goes for a run and spends some time training with biotics. Then breakfast with Rose (if he didn’t train for too long) and off to his office at Alliance HQ and seeing what needs to be done as a Spectre.

23. Is there something they have grown to appreciate more about each other over the years?

For Rose it’s that Kaidan seems to always sense when she needs an extra hug or some cuddle time, that he’s a bit more thoughtful post-war because of her injuries and instead of going out is fine with just staying in and relaxing together.

For Kaidan it’s that she’s a bit more willing to talk and communicate her needs instead of insisting that “she’s fine” when she’s clearly not. Also that she’s a little more up for trying new things instead of sticking with what’s comfortable.

24. What do they find are each other’s most endearing habits?

Rose loves how Kaidan brings home her favorite ice cream every so often or asks a question that he already knows the answer to. He’ll also crinkle his nose when he’s thinking about something or looking out the window, Rose thinks it the cutest shit ever.

Kaidan loves how Rose brushes her hair; always soft strokes and ruffles her hair afterwards to fluff it up. Also how she’ll sneak glances at him when she thinks he isn’t paying attention.

Do they go to bed early or stay up late?

Sam was “early to bed, early to rise” during her foundation days, but all that went to shit when she got to Halcyon. She tries to keep a sleep schedule, and Max helps with that, but she’s very scrambled now. Sometimes she laments her inability to have caffeine. Is she up late? Is she sleeping early? She sure as fuck doesn’t know.

Otto, tell us more about Rowan. (Consider this a general 'yell about what you please' kind of ask.) ;3c

Oh geeze uhhh....

Rowan originally started off as a very no-nonsense, eternally tired VOID warlock, if you believe it. Then I promptly scrapped the void concept and it was Solar instead. So then they became a very tired and overworked archaeologist who was quiet and reserved, tending to keep to themselves. 

But characters gonna character, and soon Rowan evolved into a Feral Space Indiana Jones with high Chaotic Dumbass energy, High Intelligence and low wisdom. A “Punch first, ask questions after” sort of person who is very headstrong and stubborn when they get their minds firmly set onto something they want to do. Heavily extroverted and empathetic.

During the Red War, Rowan decided it’d be a good idea to take a rocket to the face to protect a friend, and while Byron was in the middle of healing them back up the connection to the Light was severed, forcing Rowan to heal the natural way during the entire campaign. While Byron more than likely is able to heal Rowan up NOW, they prefer to carry the scars as a reminder of their survival. Rowan is also short as shit, standing at about 5 feet tall. 

Rowan was raised without much around them that could help identify what their name was, with Byron helpfully pointing out a rowan tree for their name because the berries are the same shade of red as their hair. Whateley, their last name, comes from the fact that they’re a giant literature nerd an liked the sound of the name from The Dunwich Horror, while Byron came from Lord Byron.
