Antonio Ciseri - The Exile (1860s)
Ecce Homo" (Behold the Man), is a religious oil on canvas painting completed in 1871 by the Italian artist Antonio Ciseri. This work is particularly significant for Good Friday, as it captures the pivotal moment from the Gospel of John (19:5) when the Roman governor Pontius Pilate presents a scourged and mocked Jesus Christ to a hostile crowd.
The painting illustrates the instant Pilate gestures toward Jesus, uttering the famous Latin phrase "Ecce Homo". Jesus is shown from behind, crowned with thorns and draped in a red robe, facing an unseen but clamoring crowd below the balcony. Ciseri chose a unique, cinematic perspective from behind the figures on the balcony, making the viewer feel like an eyewitness to the event. The composition is anchored by Pilate, who is central and illuminated, with his gesture leading the eye directly to Christ.
A hallmark of this work is its sculptural precision and historical authenticity. Ciseri used architectural props and detailed ancient garments to create a believable setting. The scene is filled with psychological tension. While Pilate is seen leaning over the railing to address the people, other figures on the balcony, including his wife Claudia Procula, appear distraught or turned away in grief, symbolizing the internal moral conflict and the recognition of Christ’s innocence, grounding the grand historical moment in raw, human emotion.
