There is always something to learn at a botanic garden! This time it was that this epiphytic plant Monolena primuliflora (ant plant) has a symbiotic relationship with ants where the plant provides shelter and in turn the ants bring in food and deposit waste that fertilizes the plant. The ant accommodation is a caudex, a swollen stem. The plants are native to the rainforest in Ecuador and Peru.

These plants have a symbiotic relationship with ants, they provide habitats for ants (ants live inside the tubers) and ants return the favour with nutrients and protection against predators. (I am unable to ID this species though)。

My 3lb 12 year old Myrmecodia tuberosa grown from seed. Not the prettiest plant but it's what's on the inside that counts: a network of galleries that can house an ant colony that provide security from predators and a steady source of 'fertilizer'. #antplant #caudex #caudiciform #pachyform #houseplants #myplants (at Toronto, Ontario)
