Antron McCray, When They See Us
I just finished watching When They See Us on Netflix. I first learned of the Central Park 5 last year when I was watching a series on false confessions. I watched these young boys give obviously coerced confessions, and I cried. I learned of their convictions, and I cried. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Grown men were intimidating young boys hour after hour without food or sleep or bathroom breaks. They promised they would be able to go home if they just “cooperated.” These young men stuck to the truth that they were innocent for hours, but eventually they became convinced that if they just told the police what they wanted to hear they could go home.
When They See Us brings this narrative to life and shows the story from the beginning to the eventual exoneration. The story was much much worse than I could ever imagine. The series illustrates well how injustice impacts the entire family. The main takeaway is that this type of injustice still occurs. People are still falsely accused an convicted. The weak are preyed upon. Minorities are preyed upon. Those who lack education and finances and privilege are preyed upon.
One scene in particular sticks out to me. One of the boys’ dad’s (after he was threatened and highly encouraged to tell his son to change his story) tells his son that they can’t win against the police so just tell the police what they want to hear so that they can go home. I started thinking about how when I was a kid I was always told police are my friend and if I needed help always go to the police. That is so far from reality for so many children, which is why this series is so important.
Ultimately what struck me the most was the resilience these men had despite these terrible circumstances. They knew they were innocent. They never waivered from that. They never grew bitter or cold. They knew and their families knew they were right. They were all fighters and survivors. I am so honored to hear their story, and I’m so grateful they chose to tell their story in this way. I sobbed the majority of the series. The writing and directing and acting is beautifully done. Everyone really needs to watch this.
