Leander, Dying on the Shore of the Hellespont - 1886 - Joris Geefs

Every evening Leander would brave the sea to swim to his beloved Hero. One stormy night

Leander drowned. The next morning Hero found his body on the beach. Geefs' sculpture was well-received by the general public. The plaster cast was first shown at the 1882 Salon in Antwerp. The museum then commissioned this marble version.

I saw this beautiful sculpture in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Antwerp. When I read the story behind it my heart broke for the young lovers.
