Heyo! Do you have any tips for making comics? :)
I've been meaning to get back into the swing of it, but concentrating on such a commitment that takes so much time is tough sometimes haha.
How do you make it work? Are there things you avoid/make easier for yourself just to make the process more fun and do-able?

This is a big question and I don’t think there’s really one simple answer since all artists are different and have their own strengths and weaknesses.
One of the biggest issues I face is that I have a million ideas but I simply don’t have the time to do them all. I want to share all these ideas but if I gave each and every idea the same amount of attention and detail, I’d hardly get anything done. So here are some things I've learned through my own comic-making experience, but keep in mind it may not be what you're looking for. Also remember this is NOT career advice. I make comics for fun, not for a living. If you’re looking for professional advice I would suggest looking elsewhere 👍
1 - A comic doesn't have to be fully rendered to be entertaining. Although I love to draw and line and color my work, it’s not always necessary. If I feel a punchline is strong enough to stand on its own, I’ll just make it into a doodle comic. In fact, I’ve found that some of my doodle comics perform better than the fully rendered ones! The doodle comics are still very fun for me to draw and they also serve as gestural drawing practice, so in the end it doesn’t feel like I'm making a sacrifice. I'm still getting my ideas out there and I'm still drawing, I'm just prioritizing what gets more attention so I can better manage my time.
2 - Not every panel needs an illustrated background. You definitely need to show backgrounds for establishing shots and when characters are interacting with the scene. But sometimes the focus needs to be entirely on the character and/or what they’re saying. You can choose to have a solid color background and maybe add a few textures to keep it visually interesting. You're still putting in the effort to make your art pop, but you aren’t losing a ton of time by drawing dozens of backgrounds. Color is also a good way to convey mood. I do that a lot in my comics, like this bit from “My Gal”:
^ I was trying to show a progression in excitement here, so having the colors change from cool to warm does a better job portraying that than if I just had a standard, scenic forest background for all the panels.
3 - Use resources: That's what they're there for! Because I make all these comics by myself, I have had to find resources to help me get through some of the steps faster so I can focus more on the story writing and the artwork. For example, to help me save time on lettering, I use the Onomatopedia font and the Manero Panels, SFX and Bubbles brush set for Procreate. I’m still selecting the sound effects and choosing the appropriate bubbles and tails to suit the mood and scale of the text, but this has saved me a ton of time because I’m not drawing each individual element by hand over and over again. Personally, I purchased these resources but I'm sure there are plenty of free tools out there that you can use.
As far as making it more fun... Honestly, I just love comics as an art form so much that learning about all the 'rules' and techniques and 'SOP's behind comics makes it more fun for me to make them. I recommend checking out tutorials and tips (even if you think you already know it all) and you might be surprised at how much it might ignite more of your comic-making passion. For example, I've spent hours on Blambot's "How-To" page and on ComicDevices.com just to try and soak up as much as I can. They're full of fascinating reads that make me want to try out different things!

Im a big fan of the “bleak” artstyle with muted colours and the 2000s inspired art.
My digital always looks so different from how I draw on paper, plus it can take literal hours for me to draw line art (that also looks rlly ahh💔).
I might also have to add that I do NOT know anything abt the different tools u can use in the different apps, I just put stabilisation on high and hope for the best honestly😭💔
I also have a weird attachment to the marker brush in Ibis paint and geshinki ink brush in Procreate and I refuse to try any other😭

hi! i wouldn't say i'm completely new to procreate, but i'm definitely new to blending 😭 i've been a fan of your art for a long time and i've always admired how smooth and painterly your colors look. i was wondering if you'd be willing to share anything about how you use the smudge tool? like, what brush do you use for smudging, what settings do you keep it on, and are there any techniques you rely on? whenever i try it, everything just ends up looking blurry and muddy, and i can't seem to get the colors to blend naturally into each other. honestly i'd love any advice you're willing to give, even if it's just "don't use the smudge tool like that" 😭 thank you for your time!!

Hmm that's a good question... I don't particularly have a technique, to be honest I use the smudge tool at 100% or 90% strength I wanna say, but other than that I just use the brushes as is! I do share my favorite brushes here and talk about my general process (timelapse included) here.
I will say though, I feel like I'm not the right person to really ask for tips on how to help blend your colors together because of how little coloring I incorporate in my pieces 😭 90% of my work is done in grayscale (rendering included), I find that it just helps my brain figure out the proper values. I then apply gradient maps and, if necessary, tweak the colors through color/overlay/multiply layers! And tbh my gradient maps are just trial and error, I've made like 50 of them and keep creating more...
With that being said, here's something i've learnt through my art journey: rough/messy brush strokes add flavor and character to an artwork. i used to smooth the crap out of all my pieces, and unfortunately still find myself doing so sometimes... but i found out that the less smooth my blending it, the more happy i tend to be with the end result! I also know it's tempting to use very smooth brushes to blend, but I highly recommend using textured ones. Worst case, start with a smooth one and then go over everything with a textured brush after! Here's an example of a piece i consider too "smooth" vs a "textured/messier" one (ofc, it's just personal preference ultimately).

Hellooooo! I’m working on a clangen blog of my own, so I’m going around asking my favorite clangen blogs some questions. I’m happy to get answers to whichever you feel like answering (or none at all if you don’t feel like it!)

NYELLO! 1. I use Procreate on Ipad! File size is pretty small because i feel more easygoing working small. it forces me not to worry too much about details. Dewclan comic pages come in 1200px wide and.. however tall the page calls for. 1200 DOESN'T SEEM SUPER TINY BUT!! when you think about adding in the speech bubbles and doing usually two panels per 'row', make space for the panels themselves, etc, you end up with only like.. 350/400px to work with. s'LIL 2. FONT is copperplate! 3. this entirely depends on you. if you wanna be able to plan ahead to connect some events, you gotta go a few moons ahead to know what to connect. but sometimes going moon by moon really keeps up your muse and excitement, because even YOU wonder what's gonna happen next. if you need to stay excited about something to keep up with it like ME, i recommend not going too far ahead. keep it Fresh 4. advice would be.. keep in mind/sketch out the placement for your characters AND their speech bubbles in their panels. i don't do this and it shows ALSDNKLSD. sometimes my speech bubbles are squARSHED, or sometimes i have to adjust the size of the font to make it fit. it's silly. PLAN AHEAD. otherwise i'm not so great at layouts and composition in that i don't have a lot of confidence in it, so i can't give much advice OGH 5. shade fur like you'd shade anything else! don't overthink it. but drawing fur can be done in a billion ways so that's a tough one to answer. in my clangen comic it's very simple, bc there's just the illusion of fur. YOU JUST.. ASSUME THERE IS FUR BC.. cats. but there isn't much definition really. sometimes i throw in a tuft or two bc for fun. outside of clangen, uHHHGH.. my fur rendering is sort of a mess. look at how your favourite artists do it! there's no one single way 6. unique cats.. play with shapes! cute round soft shapes, pointy angular shapes. play with the shapes of their ears, give em tufts or give them no tufts. think about silhouettes if you're not going with realism! if you figure out what makes a cat look like a cat enough, you can warp that anatomy and keep them looking cattish 7. i do backgrounds!! i dabble, i partake, in the backgrounds. BUT UAA advice is hard there too. what kind of bgs do you wanna do? :( I'M SORRY I NEED VERY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS I'ASKDNLK I'M EASILY CONFUSED. general advice is again, look at ones you like! think about what you like about the bgs you see and HAVE AT EM. do studies :3 8. Pinterest is good for references. at least it was last i checked before the big AI boom.. bc it'll recommend you similar things. tho i find the layout pretty disorienting. IF YOU CAN GET USED TO IT, IT'S HELPFUL THO

Oohh many questions!! Let’s seeeee
1) Frostbite’s favorite food is a warm stew, with soft vegetables, hearty meats, and extra slices!! I say warm, he’d probably prefer it hot but even eating food that’s hot can hurt!
2) Lapse probably has a few pet peeves, but they’re usually quite strange. For one, he dislikes clocks ticking too loud, he’ll leave the room or break the clock to stop the noise. Another is people ignoring him, he’ll escalate from trying to grab their attention, to poking them, then outright standing directly in front of them. And lastly, Urn (belongs to @somebodysgone) disappearing without saying where he’s going, he won’t get angry so much as anxious.
3) Honestly I can’t say I have any favorites, does my own count?🤭 an OC x Character I do adore though is Frostbite x Error! Their ship name is ColdCode, I even have a ship kid for them named Freezeframe!!
4) I love love LOVE swing music and jazz!! Mix it together and Oohh it’s beautiful!!! ✨🌈
5) other fandoms I’m apart of? Uhhh… it’s hard to say, when I hyperfixate on one, I tend to not be integrated into others! It’s a weird thing- my brain can only really focus on one. But I can mention fandoms and games I like? Like Cuphead, Bendy and the Ink Machine, Cult of the Lamb, Deltarune, and minecraft!! Been kinda getting into Animal hospital recently, and I used to be crazy about Dandy’s world! But as of now UTMV is all I’m about lol
6) I prefer coffee! I’m more into iced coffee, not a fan of tea- you could call be a Starbucks dude cuz that’s the only place I ever get coffee lol
7) I use SO MANY different types of brushes I wouldn’t be able to tell ya all of them with them all being so separated from each other and not just from one pack, as I use quite a few sketch brushes, pixel brushes, and many for patterns and texture!
8) I can’t say I’m the best at rendering- I do try my best, and I experiment with what I do if I’m feeling adventurous!! As for tips? I can’t say I have any, I tend to get a lot of inspiration from other artists, as well as Pinterest for any types of color palettes, outfits, and so on!
9) My biggest pet peeve? Uhhh… honestly I can’t think of anything unique that most people don’t already dislike!
10) So so I had to stop and think about this, I don’t really see much in beige flags but… ehh, I’d have to get back to you on that, I just can’t bring myself to think of anything!
hey, how are you? i love your art! i am just learning how to use procreate, and i was wondering what brushes or canvas do you use to get the paper effect when you’re drawing? sorry, i hope you don’t mind me asking. thank you. ☺️
hehe well i’m gonna do a basic comprehensive tutorial on my drawing process and general guidelines i follow when doing art (hope you dont mind im using ur ask), i’ll start with my process first
brushes i use:
lineart: “ink bleed” brush that comes preprogrammed in procreate
coloring/texture: maxpacks watercolor set (while in the pricy range, ive been using it for years and i think its a worthy investment, he also has sales occasionally)
for sketching: HB pencil that comes with procreate but you can use whatever
so my lineart, i typically duplicate my original layer, “color fill” the new layer with a dark red (or any dark color of ur choice), gaussian blur it @ 3% and set it to multiply and that just gives it some depth (for this piece i actually copied my dark red lineart and adjusted the opacity to make it a little darker so there’s 3 layers in total here)
now on to COLORING, i start off with a solid bright color (usually one that goes with the general palette you’d like to use, i wanted something warm so i went with a pink base)
create a new layer and thats where the colors come in, i typically do a rough estimate of the colors i want to use at this point, cause they can be adjusted later in the “color balance” setting under “adjustments” once you have your coloring done (this is all on one layer)
now my SECRET is i use the WASH GRAINY brush as an ERASER and lightly go over my color layer so the pink base comes through a little and unifies the colors and gives it that yummy texture. sometimes i erase the base color too for a little more texture but thats not necessary for every single drawing. once i erase enough, i go to “color balance” adjustment tool and mess with the hues till i get the result i want.
after that i create a multiply layer and with my WASH GRAINY brush i do shadows/face rendering. and with this piece specifically i did an add layer to simulate sunlight on them (i do extra layers at my own discretion, so have fun with it :)
as a final cherry on top i create another multiply layer, fill it with white and then set a noise filter on it @ 17% (dont ask why that number it just works for me lmao) and thats it!
if i need to clarify anything dont hesitate to ask! like i said we dont gatekeep here
and some general tips: dont over-articulate your drawing, cause i find the more i fuss with details the more stiff my drawings look, so i suggest being a little more loose with lineart/sketching and dont sweat the small stuff
same goes for coloring, the more simplistic your shapes are the more cohesive ur drawing will look
another coloring tip: if you’re having trouble with ur drawings looking “muddy” i recommend starting off with a black and white render so you can get a handle on your values before you worry about hue (i do this with my more rendered portraits but i find it helps you focus on the depth of your drawing)

At the moment I do a lot of my sketches traditionally, then transfer them to the Procreate art app on my iPad. I then clean up the sketch and add colors/ render it if the piece calls for it.
If you’re just starting out and plan on doing something serious with it, definitely get in the habit of doing basic fundamentals, study’s, life drawing, etc. Keep seeking out references if you’re unsure how certain things look or work. I think the sooner you get those down, the faster the progress will be.
(This is also a reminder to me that I need to get in a better habit of doing said warm ups/ studies)
Also if there’s something you really like or obsessing over, like a character, a movie or a show. Draw something from that a million times. Draw what you wanna draw, what you wanna see that’s not out there yet. I found that when I’m REALLY into a certain character, I only want to draw them and put them in situations. And I get better at my skill while I’m at it!
Ultimately, draw for yourself above anything else. What makes you happy will show through your art.
