ME TOOOOO.... to this day im still insanely devastated i dont get to see scout developing further, but i really hope anya is okay.
The same sentiments here for sure, Anon! I was so sad when I saw that last update, even though it's completely understandable; hopefully @anya-dev just needed a break from the project and ultimately decided to move on, but we are forever wondering.
There is something very special about that IF which (ironically) can't be put it into words. It isn't overly simple, nor overly complex, and it doesn't overwhelm you with options.
Recently read Scout: An Apocalypse Story by @anya-dev and I wanted to draw some of the characters that were dearly close to my heart. Please give it a try. The story and writing is good. I highly recommend it! :)
Here's Rhyla Valenrose (my scout), Oliver Shen, Sabine Langford, and Ezra Taylor!
So I talk about Otomes a lot here because that will be a major focus of the database however I thought now was a good time to remind people that the database will include Romance Related Interactive Fiction as well.
The 2 examples I have as test data at the moment are
The Wayhaven Chronicles
Scout:An Apocalypse Story
I choose these games as the test data for a few reasons.
They are on different platforms so that helps with testing.
They are at different stages of development.
One is a series which helps me play around with linked data.
I know a lot about them as I’ve played them both. Many times
They are both amazing games and you should check them out.
I hope this excites Romance IF fans as much as it does me. I always found it so hard to figure out which games featured romance and which didn’t so i’m hoping this site will help inform people and help them find their next favourite game.
Okay last art post for the night! This pose took me FOREVER and I'm still not 100% happy with it's good enough. Here's Joanes Roanwell from @anya-dev's Scout: An Apocalypse Story!
[Image description: A digital drawing of a person crouching down, with most of their weight resting on their right leg. They look casually off to the side, dangling an axe from their left hand. They have red hair shaved short, beige skin, and are wearing a pale green shirt with khakis. They also have green running shoes on, half moon glasses, and some bandages wrapped around their right wrist. They have a cleft lip. End image description.]
Aaaand in-game info! Oh joy this time I actually screenshot some of the interesting stuff!
[Image description: An in-game page describing Joanes Roanwell's attributes.
Name: Joanes Roanwell
Age: 24
Traveled to community from: Northwest USA
Appearance: Scout Roanwell can be recognized around the community by their hazel eyes, shaved red hair and beige skin tone.
Team Profile
Team Members: Lead Scout Oliver Shen; Scout Ezra Taylor
Position: Navigator
Combat: Joanes has shown significant skills in hand-to-hand and weaponry combat. Preferred weapon is an ax.
Personality Profile
Scout Roanwell is an extremely skilled scout and academic. Roanwell displays high levels of intelligence and competence. Could prove incredibly useful, but can be unpredictable.
Scout Roanwell illustrates the value of a collectivist mindset in the Community. Roanwell puts other Community members first and makes a significant effort to know and support all members.
Scout Roanwell prefers to deploy their intellectual skill set before their physical or combative strength.
Scout Roanwell has a troublesome history of risk-taking behavior, even to their own detriment.
The following is cut off by my own shitty screenshot-ing skills, but can barely be read as: Scount Roanwell has unfortunetly shown an inappropriate playful and facetious attitude in- at this point the rest is cut off.
Hi! Feel free to post publicly or privately. Or not respond to a fairly sensitive topic - no worries at all. I just read your Ko-Fi post on gender/physical body part choices and, though definitely not assuming that this was about my text game specifically, found it relevant to the choices I force the player to make at the very outset. I had attempted to set myself up for physical descriptions down the road, but reading your post made me realize that forcing a gender then physical choice (1/2)
worded as male vs. female, is incredibly invalidating. This was never my intention and I really appreciate your perspective on how that language was gross and inappropriate, to say the least. I’m updating that text later today after work and changing it to simply opting in or out of sex scenes and physically neutral language. Thank you so much for your post! This is new territory for me and I really appreciate your thoughtful insight. Taking this lesson with me into future writing endeavors. /2
Your game is on my to read once I get one iota of energy back, so just to reassure you even though you didn’t assume !! And I mean like I said, it doesn’t come from a place of malice esp when you go through the effort in the first place to offer they/them. We’re all just wandering helplessly in this hellscape and gently bumping into things, the best thing we can do is redirect others from hazards we have already bumped into 🧡
I hope it is okay that I do post this publicly just because I find Growth just feels good for everyone involved (which someone should tell literally everyone on Twitter like wow) and I’m glad you were able to come to this decision and it was probably kind of unnerving to type it all out (I’ve done the same thing and there’s always this like quiet drop of oh no I didn’t mean to).
So like hell yeah !! Good things all around !! 🧡🧡🧡
anya-dev replied to your post “anya-dev replied to your post “i think it depends on what the aim...”
it's funny because i find your writing (the character dialogue specifically) SO refreshingly original that it surprises me that you even worry about 'sameness.' it's like finding out a hot celebrity worries about acne, it's like..what??? YOU??¿¿
ahh thank you 🧡🧡🧡🧡 it’s just WORRISOME especially because like I think me and a lot of independent creators on here are pretty dedicated to kindness and thoughtfulness in all LIs and it can be a fine line to walk when you also don’t want to sound like you’re lecturing at people.
