It’s also International Workers’ Day (or just Labor Day).

This is one of my favorite May Songs. Not as much of an earworm as Hal-an-Tow, but the drama of this one can’t be beat.
Waterson-Carthy “May Song”
MAY 1ST IS TOMORROW.
Gonna dance up the sun (or at least be up for sunrise). I found some folks from the local country dance group to celebrate with, so that’ll be fun! And then later I’m gonna drink French 75s and watch The Wicker Man.
Shoutout to people who didn’t want to celebrate Solstice alone, but don’t have any loved ones who also celebrate, so were kinda just SOL.
Light a fire on this day. Let something burn. That is what the solstices are for.
A gorgeous Winter Solstice essay from Nina MacLaughlin in The Paris Review.
Happy Solstice, one and all!
The longest night begins tonight at our home. We’ve got a bottle of spiced wine we’ll warm up and try to keep vigil until the sun rises.
(and by we I mean I. the cats don’t drink)
“Even to city children spring comes with some measure of exuberance and the less the city offers the more we as teachers need to cherish spring's meaning and its essential beauty. With somewhat this conviction the May Day celebration has grown up in the Francis W. Parker School and it is one of the loveliest of all the whole round year.”
