Listening to the new WHY? album and I'm just sitting here like "hm it's no Alopecia" but for some reason this song comes on and my brain is like "YESSSSS"

WHY? UK TOUR TO START 23RD OCTOBER NEW ALBUM ‘AOKOHIO’ OUT NOW VIA JOYFUL NOISE RECORDINGS
Why?: AOKOHIO
All of Why?’s albums, for better or for worse, have served as testaments to where the band’s frontman, Yoni Wolf, is at in his life, in terms of his relationship with himself and all of his neuroses. On AOKOHIO, Yoni continues with this introspection, reflecting on his past and trying to make sense of who he’s become and who he’s always been. “I’ve been shaking off a shadow all my life,” Yoni sings on the standout track, “Peel Free”, which could be the tag line for the album.
AOKOHIO contains all the lush instrumentation we’ve come to expect from Why?, complete with piano flourishes, Yoni’s nasally rapping, and plenty of overdubbed percussion instruments from Yoni’s brother, Josiah Wolf. Something that sets this album apart from other Why? releases is the short length of the songs--19 tracks in 31 minutes. I could understand the criticism that this leads to an album of many undercooked ideas, but as I see it, this reflects the way in which Yoni is trying to organize and make sense of his many scattered thoughts. Always an incredibly verbose lyricist, Yoni provides plenty of reason to keep coming back to AOKOHIO.
This album has been marketed as a visual album a la Lemonade, but personally I think it works better as a regular album without the accompanying video. The visuals do make for a cool music video, particularly the beginning section which shows Yoni shaving his hair off, interspersed with endearing camcorder footage from his childhood. However, I don’t think there’s enough going on there to sustain a half hour, unlike the music itself which stays diverse and compelling all the way through.
Grade: A-

WHY? – Please take me home, I don’t belong here. (Music Video)
In the mid-2000’s, Yoni Wolf decided to turn a solo pseudonym into a full band and WHY? set off on charting one of the most fascinating career paths of any band in recent memory. After that 2004 turning point, WHY? would release what are widely, but quietly, hailed as classics in Elephant Eyelash and Alopecia, two chameleon-esque records that veer in and out of hip-hop, folk, indie rock,…
