Chapter Sixteen: Warm-Blooded
I’m not really ready to say what went down in the bedroom that morning, but I liked it in a way that made me feel kind of strange inside. I lay there beside him with my face buried in his shoulder. “Are you okay?” Lixin asked. I nodded and pulled him closer to me. “Was this too much right now?”
“I don’t know… I just want to hold you for a little bit,” I confessed.
“Okay,” Lixin whispered. I could hear the smile in his voice, and it set me at ease. “We’ll talk when you’re ready.” I kissed his shoulder and moved my forehead to his neck. “Are you coming down with something?” He wriggled loose and turned to me, feeling my forehead.
“No, I’m not sick. I just run hot,” I replied as he kissed my forehead and scrunched down to kiss my shoulder and neck. “I don’t wanna leave here. Was it good for you?”
“Mhm. Are you sure you don’t have a fever?” Lixin asked as he playfully nipped at my chin. “Do you wanna take a cool bath? I’m a little worried.”
I guess I was a little feverish, but I hadn’t started feeling bad yet. “Are you sure it was good for—?”
“If I think about it too much, I think it might get me started all over again,” Lixin replied as he ran his hand up my chest and over my shoulders. “Do you think I’d still be in bed like this if it wasn’t good for me? I want you, but I’m a little worried about how warm you are right now.” Lixin kissed my throat. “Does this feel bad?”
I smiled. “No, that’s nice,” I replied.
“Let me run you a bath,” Lixin smiled as he put on his boxers and left me by myself. I didn’t want to get dressed, so I lay there waiting for him, growing more anxious with every minute. By the time he got back, I started feeling kind of nauseous and embarrassed. I think he picked up on it because he wasn’t playing around anymore. “Come on. I’ll sit with you.”

I woke up in the afternoon, feeling like I’d been kicked all over my body. I had a damp t-shirt on my forehead, and my phone vibrated on my chest. Lixin rushed over to take it off my chest, and I let him. He didn’t try to unlock my phone; he just set it next to me and returned to whatever he was doing on the floor in the corner of the room. Then, I heard him speaking. “I told you that I don’t want to see them. Seeing them in person isn’t gonna change anything,” Lixin whispered. “I can… I can stay mad at them forever if I want to. I don’t want them anywhere near me… I’m serious. If you bring them to my meet, I’ll never forgive you… I don’t care. I don’t—. I can’t talk to you right now. I gotta go.” He hung up and sighed. I climbed out of bed, a little dizzy and weak from my fever, and I think I scared him.
“Lixin, are you—?”
He tensed up before standing and turning to hold me. “Get back in the bed right now,” Lixin mumbled into my chest.
“What’s wrong? Why are you shaking, too?” I asked.
“I’m gonna be fine,” Lixin replied as I rubbed his back. “Get back in bed.”
“Only if you stay with me,” I answered. Lixin nodded and followed me back to bed. “What’s wrong?”
“My aunt and uncle, who tried to take custody of me when I came out to everyone, are coming around. They thought they could fix me,” Lixin whispered. “The court battle was super traumatic, and of course, my sister won, but it messed me up for a long time.”
“I’m sorry… I’m glad you got to stay with Fang… And if you want to change the subject, you can look through my phone. I trust you,” I whispered. “Who else is gonna make me feel the way that you do?”
“You know what, you might actually be a real softie underneath it all,” Lixin whispered. “Are you okay about earlier?”
“Yeah, I um… I’m sorry that I got sick right after, but I—” I looked at him and couldn’t remember how to talk for a second.
“Are you nervous around me?” Lixin chuckled. I nodded. “Don’t be nervous. I’ll make you some soup.”
“Are you okay?” I asked. Lixin nodded.
“Yeah. I’m happy to be here with you. This is nice,” Lixin replied. “I’m enjoying my time with you.”
**
I sat in bed, eating soup while Lixin did his homework next to me. “Am I masculine to you?” I questioned.
“Yeah,” Lixin answered. “I like masculine guys. You don’t need to feel insecure about that. Nothing changes. Would it make you feel better if you got to be—”
“I don’t want to do that… I guess I’m just asking because I wouldn’t want to do that. I like the way you did things,” I interrupted.
“You don’t have to be embarrassed. It’s just you and me. I promise you that I won’t judge you,” Lixin reassured me as he stopped typing to stroke my cheek with the back of his hand. “You’re not as warm. Do you want some more soup?”
“No, I’m okay. I’m just gonna sleep it off,” I answered.
Lixin shut his laptop and turned to me. “Are you mad?” Lixin questioned.
“No. I just know if I sleep, I’ll feel way better in the morning,” I whispered. Lixin scrunched down in the bed and kissed my cheek.

When I woke up, Lixin was fast asleep next to me, breathing heavily like he’d been sleeping for a long time. I looked at the time and smiled because it was early morning. “Li?” I whispered. Lixin didn’t stir, so I had time to clean up and make him breakfast. By the time I got the bacon going, I felt his arms around my waist.
“Get back in bed,” Lixin mumbled.
“I feel fine. I just wanted to surprise you,” I answered. Lixin squeezed tight, and I got a funny feeling in my stomach like I did when we kissed. I didn’t want to look him in the eye when I felt like that because it made it so hard to think. “How would you feel about me kissing you?” I asked. It wasn’t what I meant to say, but that’s how it came out of my mouth.
“You’ve already kissed me, but I think you’re trying to warm your way up to something. Is there a specific way you want to kiss me?” Lixin asked.
“Kind of,” I answered. I could feel my face start boiling as I tried to force the question out.
“Are you asking about kissing me somewhere on my body?” Lixin questioned in reply.
My heart was pounding, and I knew if he asked one more question, I’d lose my nerve completely. “I’m asking for permission to give you head, Lixin,” I answered as indifferently as I could. Lixin let go of me and turned his back. “Li?”
“I’m sorry, I just can’t believe you’re this cute. Of course, you can give me head. Not too many boyfriends are gonna turn that down,” Lixin giggled. “Also, if this is about our conversation, I meant what I said. You’re very much my type. Masculine, handsome, you’re tidy… Reliable. I like everything about you. Even if you become more feminine as our relationship progresses, it won’t change how I feel about you.”
“I know… I just—” I picked him up and set him on the counter so that I could level the playing field a little. “I really like you, and I want to do something intimate that’s just for you. I want to learn how to make you feel good. I can learn. I want to—” Lixin wrapped his arms around my waist, and we started kissing hard and fast. It was a good thing I turned the fire down or else the bacon would’ve burned.
