Brain Freeze (Sno Problem) Chapter 5
It's out! You can expect one more bonus one-shot (some scenes from Tails' POV) but this is the final chapter of the main fic. Thank you all so much for reading!!
Part 1, 2, 3, 4 ao3 Complete
He found the stupid loophole because of Sonic, much to his own dismay.
“Your only loyalty is to Robotnik and his empire. You are to obey no one else.”
Well, he was a part of Robotnik’s empire.
”Listen to yourself”
He could do that, as long as it didn’t contradict his superiors.
”Entertain yourself”
Those idiots were so mean. The desire to get back at them had slowly come to a boil the previous night. Scaring them would be very entertaining. As long as no one caught him, it would be fine, right?
After his Master got in the bath, the little fox went back to the lab. He messed with the old panel in that weird closet to see what it did. Upon the discovery that it could control some basic functions around the lair, a plan formed in his mind.
He spent some time setting up the speakers, icing the floors, and placing Stopper-Zapper, Anti-Gravity Ray, and banana peels in strategic locations. He only had to wait for Scraaaatch and Grounder to come around the corner.
Unfortunately, the two things he hadn’t planned for was their stupidity and the hedgehog getting loose.
Can you blame him? He had only existed for a day.
................................................................................................................................
Gear did not open his eyes when he came to. Some soft pillows and a mattress propped him up on his side. It was so, so comfy. More relaxing than the metal sheet by far, never mind the cage. He was definitely not in his Master’s base anymore.
The thought gave him a pause. Something was wrong. The least of his worries was that he was not at all worried about being out of the base, even though he had no idea how he left.
More concerningly, where was the compulsion to throw himself at his ruler’s feet? To obey everything he said without question?
The feelings had been carved out of him, leaving him with a strange sense of relief. Where was his unconditional loyalty? The doctor had given him a name, a role. He wasn’t thrown out or… okay so he was definitely called a freak.
He… asked… to be called a freak.
The absurdity of that realization knocked him out of whatever comforting cloud he was floating in.
Gear’s eyes flew open. There was a little table beside his bed with some food and medicine bottles on it. Some of the former looked like it had been eaten already. A loud growl pounded the sides of his stomach at the site of it. He quickly grabbed a few treats and burrowed back under the covers—a chill running its soft, deadly hands down his arms the moment he left the covers.
He whimpered. His hunger compelled him to eat, but it did very little to ease his tummy.
Where was he? Where was the doctor?
Did he want the doctor?
Well, yes, obviously, a part of him said.
He’s a bully. A quiet part whispered. He’s mean and he makes you mean.
Gear wanted to pick at one of his tails, but moving them hurt even more than when he woke up in the lab. He settled for taking off one of his gloves and chewing on his claws.
Thinking of the doctor made him sick. He felt like he would die if he had to step even a foot back into the base. But what else was he supposed to do? Robotnik and his creations were all he knew.
Robotnik… and Sonic.
The kit’s eyes widened. Sonic.
The events leading up to him being knocked suddenly burst into his head.
The conversation in the cell. The order to entertain himself. Borrowing the machines to get some revenge on Scraaatch and Grounder.
Sonic catching him. Sonic freezing him.
Listen to yourself
Air was having trouble staying in the fox’s chest. The warmth underneath the blankets was becoming overwhelming, but the frigid air outside threatened to take a bite out of him.
A hand brushed his arm.
The fox shrieked and leapt out of bed. The cold, hard floor sent daggers of ice through his little body. Tears he hadn’t noticed building up exploded out of him. Large, painful sobs wracked every part of him. His fur fluffed up in fear.
He wanted it to all just stop.
The hand tried touching him again and he flinched back.
Through the wetness streaming out of his eyes, he noticed a blue blur staring at him with his hands outstretched.
A numbing flame of fury lit in Gear’s chest. He leapt towards the damned hedgehog, claws outstretched.
Before he could even blink, he was wrapped in a blanket and firmly deposited back onto the bed.
Sonic gestured for him to settle down while giving the kit some space.
Gear tried to maintain his anger, but the warm comfort of the bedsheets trapping him was hard to resist. His tired, teary frame slumped into the cocoon. His sobs softened a tiny bit.
Sonic smiled at him, strained. There was a bandage on his shoulder. Not even a hint of his blood remained in Gear’s mouth.
“Tails-“
Little brother.
The kit blinked, and when he opened his eyes, his paw was stretched out in between them. Gear stared at it.
The hedgehog slowly moved so he was sitting on the edge of the bed, within arms reach.
The kit retreated back into the warmth of the blankets. He didn’t wanna do it. He held his fist to his chest. Looking down, tears continued to trail down his cheeks.
“Why do you make me bad?”
Sonic sighed. “You’re not bad, kid.”
The fox shook his head. “You told me that I should listen to myself, so I tried to scare Grounder and Scraaaatch when the doctor told me to keep busy. ‘Cause of that, you were freed and everything was trashed.”
“Hard to see that as doing something bad, keed.” Sonic spoke softly. “Robotnik is a mean old egg who wants to take over the world, and his dumbots always muck things up. Do you really regret messing around, or do you just think you should?”
The kit looked up, mouth agape. The question was so bizarre that he stumbled on his way to even begin thinking of an answer. “I-I don’t know. Maybe.” His breath stuttered. “Yes.”
Sonic slowly reached out a hand. The kit stared at it. He bowed his head, too exhausted to resist. The hedgehog gently ran his fingers through his bangs. A warmth more potent than anything the kit had ever felt spread through him. He leaned into it, disarmed and desperate for more of that kind and loving sensation.
Listen to yourself
Little brother
Who’d want to be family with you?
All the breath left his lungs as the memory of his own voice popped into his head. He froze and reluctantly leaned away from the touch.
The kit tried to collect his thoughts. There was a void in his throat that sucked in and threw out all his feelings and fears in a horrible, exhausting cycle without him uttering a word.
“Were we–” the kit finally managed to hiccup out. “Brothers?”
The hedgehog straightened, eyes brightening in a sudden burst of joy. This was the first time the kit had ever seen him happy–at all–and for some reason, it made him really happy, too.
“Yeah.” Joyful tears filled Sonic’s eyes. “We are. Have been since you were in diapers. Robuttnik kidnapped you and used a mind control chip to make you forget.”
“Make me Gear,” the kit realized out loud.
A flash of hatred overtook Sonic for a fleeting moment. He smothered it in relief before nodding. “I took us to a hospital to get the chip removed. I guess his orders haven’t completely faded, but you’re free from him.”
The kit nodded slowly, eyes fixated on his claws. He put his glove back on.
The room was silent for a minute as he processed everything. The petting resumed, and a soft glow lit up in his chest.
“Since I’m not Gear,” his small voice broke the silence, each word adding another crack. “Can I be Tails?”
Sonic sucked in a quick gasp. He matched his best friend’s wide, imploring eyes and let out a small laugh.
“You can be whoever you want.”
The fox leaned forward, bunting his head against Sonic’s chest.
“I want to be me.”
Arms wrapped around his blanket cocoon. Tails’ eyes fluttered close. Rocking back and forth, he fell asleep in the safest place in the world.
................................................................................................................................
The last thing he saw was the doctor’s wide grin. He kicked and screamed for his hero, fear overtaking him. Cold bindings wrapped around his limbs and his captors pulled. A needle penetrated his skin. Liquid doom flowed into his bloodstream. His kicks weakened and his shouts were silenced. His older brother would never hear his last cry.
**********************
He hated hated hated hated that hedgehog. Why did the robots have to free him? If only the doctor decided to starve the rodent. He was ruining everything.
The hedgehog desperately tried to grab him, but he jumped out of the way. Now the doctor would be mad and he would probably punish his pet for it.
There had to be a way to salvage the situation. Damage control. He really did his best. But his best wasn’t enough to stop the escaped prisoner.
A blast of ice put any potential solutions on pause.
*******************************
Scraaaaatch, Grounder, and Coconuts were Robotniks’ mechanical servants, and they clearly inherited their creator's sadism. Any being below them was automatically a punching bag. Gear stood at their feet. They threw rags, brooms, and buckets at him, slinging an order along with each tool.
“Clean”
“Mop”
“Carry this”
“Empty that”
“Dig this up”
Even if it hadn’t been said aloud, he wasn’t supposed to resent the robots. That didn’t stop the ugly feelings from bubbling within him as he dug through the mud.
Thankfully, the irritation was easy to bury beneath his exhaustion. His fur was gross, and the stench clogged up his nostrils so far up that he was definitely getting brain damage.
By midnight, he felt like he was connected to a remote control. Commands were issued to his body without his brain’s input. Figuring that force would keep his body going, Gear’s mind floated away, prevented from flying off into dream land by a thin chain.
As soon as he received the go-ahead, Gear collapsed into the dirt, free.
**********************
He ripped out a quill. And another. And another.
“Tails”
“Tails”
“Tails”
“Tails”
Sonic kept wincing. Small, lonely tears trailed down his face. No matter how much pain the fox inflicted, it was never enough.
“Listen–”
Tails
Tails
Pluck

He hugged his former brother tightly, crocodile tears streaming down his face. A play on an act that once brought him love and joy was now an excruciating experience. Sonic was a failure and so totally uncool.
Still, no one could deny his speed. A gloved hand froze when it felt the wound. (It still hurt.) In a blink, he knew.
A protector left behind. A useless hero.
Tails still loved him. He did not want to, but the doctor never told him to stop.
................................................................................................................................
Coughing, Tails woke up. He gasped for air, sweat coating his fur. His older brother patted him on the back, whispering reassurances into his ear.
Tails winded his arms around his brother’s chest, but retracted when his hands brushed blue quills.
Sonic gripped him tighter. “Keed–”
Gotta speed, keed!
The memory came without warning. Running across Mobius with the wind in his fur. Tails spinning as he tried to keep up. Laughter lost in his hero’s slipstream. The faint, remembered sensation was enough to take his breath away.
“Keed,” Sonic tried again. He probably never stopped.
Tails hiccuped, teary eyes finally meeting his brother’s. The two of them were still lying on the hospital bed. It was the middle of their last night there. The only night Tails could remember.
Sonic smiled at his kit. “There you are. Nightmare?”
“Sorta.”
One of the arms wrapped around him came up to scratch behind his ears. “Whaddya mean?”
Large, blue eyes traced the bandage covering the bite mark. Phantom flesh ripped beneath his fangs. He tried to bite one of his gloves to get rid of the sensation.
The hand scratching his head grabbed his paw and pulled it away. “Hey, don’t do that.” Sonic interlaced their fingers. His other arm squeezed the kit gently. Worry filled his eyes and voice as he asked, “What’s wrong, bud?”
“I think my memories are coming back.”
Shock and hope fully woke up Sonic. “Really?” he breathed out.
“A little.” Tails shut his eyes, trying to prevent any more tears. “I remember biting you. The first time. And the moment before the doctor–” he couldn’t say it.
The two were so close that the fox could feel Sonic tensing up in a mixture of horror and protectiveness.
“Oh, bud.”
“I called for you,” Tails said. The words spilled out of him before he could even think to dam them in for Sonic’s sake. “I was so scared, and I wanted you so badly. He used that to make me hate you. And I did. I hated you so much.” His words broke on the way out. “I enjoyed hurting you.”
Sonic wrapped his other arm back around and curled around the kit.
“I’m sorry–” the two said simultaneously.
“Wha–but you don’t have anything to be sorry about!” Tails exclaimed. “None of it was your fault.”
“I could say the same to you.” Sonic laughed wetly. “I was too slow and you paid the price. You didn’t do anything wrong; Eggman was controlling you.”
Tails shook his head. “Not completely. He didn’t tell me to make up mean names for myself, and he didn’t tell me to bite you-–just to make sure you didn’t get away. Those were my ideas.”
“You only came up with them because of what Robuttnik told you to believe.”
“It was still me.”
Sonic sighed. “I have a really hard time believing that. Do you feel like taking another bite out of me?”
“No!” Tails pushed him away, and the hedgehog grabbed his shoulder.
Tapping him on the nose, Sonic smirked. “Then, I don’t think we’ll have anything to worry about.”
Tails bit his lip and nodded. If big bro said it was okay, then, it was okay.
And he had something to say, too. “It wasn’t your fault either. Robotnik put the chip in as soon as I got to the lair. There just wasn’t any time.”
He couldn’t read his older brother’s expression, but he hoped that his words meant something.
“I’ll take your word for it, buddy.”
Tails tucked his head under Sonic’s chin and hugged him tightly. He sank into the solace of the nice bedsheets and protective arms.
The next morning, the hedgehog was the first one to wake up. He pretended to sleep for a little while longer, enjoying the peace.
Tails slept in for hours longer than usual–it’s not like Sonic wanted to disturb him at that point. The little fox eventually woke and asked for some chili dogs while rubbing his eyes.
Sonic laughed. “Soon, keed. We need to sign out first. Then we can find a restaurant. Preferably one with a chow down on chillidogs challenge.”
Tails snapped his fingers. “Alliteration!”
Brain Freeze, Chapter 3
Chapter title would probably just be confusing if I put it here so youll have to see it on ao3.
Part 1, 2, 4, 5 (Complete)
.................................................................................................................................
The more Sonic tried to talk to Tails-–whether to encourage him to fight the control or simply see how much of him was still there—the more annoyed the kid got. Having to deal with Scratch and Grounder the entire way back to Robotnik’s lair didn’t help matters.
The two of them kept ordering him to do stupid things like fly into a tree or insult Sonic or himself. The robots took great amusement in exercising their power over him.
When they weren’t bullying Tails, Sonic tried to talk some sense into him. From what he was able to gather, it seemed the kid remembered basically everything, but Robotnik had completely changed his way of thinking. His friendship with Sonic was rendered meaningless because he could only think of himself as Robotnik’s slave.
The impact of this mindset was clear in the way he spoke. While Tails could be sassy or rude sometimes, it was often due to lacking a filter or retaliating against bad guys in his own way. Now, he couldn’t openly insult the dumbbots, so his main target was Sonic himself. And his insults were downright malicious.
“Stick-in-the-mud.”
“Slacker.”
“Selfish.”
That last one forced a confused look out of Sonic. “Kid, you’re working for Robotnik right now.”
“Well, yeah, but his Evilness is the ultimate dictator. You’re just some hedgehog trying to play hero.” The kid rolled his eyes. “And it’s not like you’re good at it.”
“Robuttnik hasn’t won yet.”
Scratch laughed. “Face it, hedgehog, your chances are up!”
Sonic frowned and ignored him. Even though he knew it was his nemesis who was really talking, it was hard to hear those words in his baby brother’s voice. It was hard to not believe some of it. What kind of best friend was he, letting his little buddy get taken and used like this? Heck, this was far from the first time Tails was hurt under his watch. The kid may never say it to his face under normal circumstances, but was it possible that some of this resentment was real?
The hedgehog shook his head. No, he and Tails had an unbreakable bond. The joy on his face when they ate chilidogs or stargazed together could not be faked . He couldn’t let the doctor’s machinations get to him. All that mattered now was freeing his friend.
Unfortunately, Sonic didn’t see an opening before reaching the lair’s doors. The robots brought him to the control room where the doctor was waiting. He was grinning smugly. If the hedgehog could reach him, he would have been knocked right over the peak of Mount Splatterhorn.
Tails landed beside his old foe. His tails and arms dangled limply. With a blank face, he stared at his master, awaiting orders.
Contrasting the kit’s blank expression, Scratch and Grounder presented their new prisoner with large smiles on their faces. They pushed him forwards, and the weights connected to his cuffs dragged him down.
“We got Sonic!” Grounder yelled in glee.
“Now there is nothing to stand in your way, oh glorious leader!” Scratch added on.
“Eggcelent, you two. Now, shut your metal mouths before I unscrew them.” Robotnik rubbed his mustache. He leaned over a growling Sonic.
“You old fart! Don’t think I’m just gonna take this lying down!”
“Of course not!” Robotnik yelled in glee. “You’ll take it while strung up in my dungeons!”
“Like those can hold me!”
Robotnik reached out a hand and roughly grabbed Tails’ neck. Sonic froze. The mad scientist held up the docile child.
“I’m sure that won’t be a problem anymore.”
Sonic trembled, fear and anger boiling up in his stomach. Scratch and Grounder grabbed him and forced his limbs onto a table created for this very moment. Once he was strapped to it, it lifted to give him a front-row seat to the show. He didn’t fight back for fear of Robotnik hurting his friend, but he refused to roll over for them. A stream of blood ran from his shoulder and down the dark grey table
The doctor finally seemed to notice the stains on the fox’s muzzle that matched the wound. He laughed in delight.
“Well done, brat!” He set the kid down and patted his head a few times. “Now I know exactly where to install your Servitude Chip… eventually.”
Sonic ignored the threat, too focused on Tails. “Get your hands off of him!”
The kit’s face scrunched up, just a little. It was the first expression he had made since getting there.
Robotnik, on the other hand, only became more gleeful with every second, relishing in his enemy’s desperation. “I don’t see any issue with handling my minions as I wish. What do you think, pet?”
Tails’ looked up at Robotnik with big innocent eyes that lacked their usual spark. “Master is always correct. I will obey his command.”
The sting from his little brother’s situation was starting to settle into a steady ache in Sonic’s chest. (It still caused him more pain than he had ever felt in his life.)
“And how would you feel if Sonic tried to hug you?”
“I would bite him again—unless you told me not to.”
“Why?”
“Because he opposes you, and I’m yours.”
“SHUT UP!” Sonic yelled. He made eye contact with the doctor. “I get the point! You have control over him! But I know my brother!”
Robotnik simply smirked.
Tails huffed, frustration breaking through the emotionless shell he had been hiding behind. “I’m not your brother. I hate you.”
“Yes, you are! I don’t care what Robotnik makes you say!” Sonic pleaded. “Tails, we all know that you don’t actually think that. You remember our runs, our adventures, and our friendship. You remember those times I saved you, and you saved me. That chip is controlling you, and you know it. But you can fight; I know you can!” He was about to shout out every encouragement he could think of, bolstered by the slight surprise and nervousness on the kit’s face.
Grounder tied a rope around Sonic’s muzzle before he could get another word in. He struggled enough that Scratch had to keep his head still while his partner tightened the knot.
Tails’ eyes were wide. Sonic tried to motivate him silently. The kit looked up at Robotnik.
“Anything to say?”
Tails considered his next words carefully. “Whatever you want, Master.”
Sonic clenched his fists, feeling closer to crying than he had for a long, long time.
“Indeed,” Robotnik bragged. He approached Sonic and grabbed his chin. With an exaggerated sigh, he said “Right now, I’m starting to get annoyed by that disgusting optimism you insist on clinging on to.” He let go and moved off to the side of the control panel. The iconic mustache twanged as its owner rubbed his hands down his face. After a moment, the doctor snapped his fingers. “And I know just how to get rid of it.”
The doctor walked back to the fox and manhandled him until he was in front of his older brother. Sonic sucked in a large breath through his nose. His mind went blank with terror, knowing that whatever came next would spell disaster.
“Tails, I want you to forget everything about Sonic the Hedgehog.”
Turns out Sonic had been wrong. Tails' eyes had never been blank, because they still shone with a warped understanding. Of Sonic, of the world, of himself.
With a single order, that was gone. Tails was gone.
And he took Sonic's heart with him.
.................................................................................................................................
The fox swayed as Robotnik’s order took effect. He kept his hands on the kit’s shoulders to keep him upright, relishing in Sonic’s devastated expression as his former friend forgot him right before his eyes.
The quivering of his ears, the slacked posture, the despair in his gaze. It was so delicious Robotnik could write up a 5-star review. He had successfully drawn Sonic into a waking nightmare.
A smile lit up his face, harsher than his brightest bulbs. He couldn’t help it. His genius plan was more successful than he ever could have imagined. The world was truly shining on him today. His grand fate was finally within reach.
It took a few moments for the fox to steady himself. He started looking around curiously. The soft fur brushing Robotnik’s fingers drew his attention to his minion. He tapped the side of the kit’s head.
The kit looked over his shoulder. His mouth parted, and his eyes struggled to focus. “M-master?” he squeaked out.
Robotnik stared back at him, only now facing the fact that he had to do something with this brat. It would be easy enough to hand him over to Coconuts for a little bit, but Sonic’s audible gulp was a great reminder on how much of a waste that would be.
Plus, he was a scientist. Collecting data was a part of his job.
“What is the last thing you remember?” He truly did not know what the answer would be, so it would be a useful gauge.
“Um…” the kit mumbled. “I dunno. It’s all fuzzy.”
Robotnik raised an eyebrow. That might be a side effect from the strain the order placed on the kid’s brain. Best make sure he hadn’t overdone it.
“Do you know who I am?”
The fox nodded vigorously. “You’re my Master!”
“Good.” The doctor used a hand to turn his captive’s head back towards Sonic. “And who is this, fox?”
The kid’s head moved around, looking all around the room. The doctor couldn’t see his expression, but it was clear some part of the signal was lost..
“What fox, Master?”
Robotnik blinked. “Are you messing with me?”
The shoulders beneath his hand tensed, as did the rodent’s fists.
“I’m sorry, Master. I didn’t wanna upset you! I don’t know anyone else here or any foxes!” the kit rambled.
The soon-to-be-dictator did a double take. He looked back and forth between the hedgehog and his tagalong, a despicable delight bubbling up inside him. By Chaos! How incompetent do you have to be to not know your own species! This brat was truly empty-headed. Sonic may have taken advantage of that fact to fill him with ideas of heroism, freedom, and chilidogs, but Robotnik could see the true potential of the kit’s gullibility.
The laugh finally escaped his chest. “How pathetic!” he crowed. Smacking the kit on the top of his empty skull, he exclaimed, “You're the fox, fox!”
The brat paid no attention to the hit. His eyes widened in wonder, and he agreed, “Of course, Master!”
“This is better than I thought.” The doctor turned the fox around. For the first time, the two-tailed freak was able to steal some of the attention away from Sonic (not to say Robotnik still didn’t have an eye on him). He backed up, giving the fox a full once-over. The kid stood up straight, ears alert.
If he didn’t even realize he was a fox… “Tell me, pet, who is Tails?”
Blink. Blink. “I dunno. Is that me, too? Because of my tails?” The appendages in question stuck out, as if to say “these?”
Sonic hissed and started yelling something from behind his muzzle. The brat’s eyes drifted over, so Robotnik snapped a few times. “Ignore the blue rodent.”
His pet nodded obediently, ready to perform any new trick asked of him. Robotnik was eager to test that commitment with this next idea. “And, no. Your name is not Tails. I will decide what you are called and any other designations, and I can change them at any time.” He paused to let the chip process the order and make it a foundational part of the kit’s mind. “For now, your name is…”
The order hung in the air. Robotnik had no idea what to say. His eyes flickered towards Sonic, who had once again begun to flail as much as he could. Muffled screams filled the room as tears welled in his eyes. Never once did his gaze break from his former sidekick.
Robotnik smirked. Drawing this out was already so much fun. “What do you think, hedgehog?”
Sonic just screamed louder. He might have been cursing him, actually, which was a new one. Usually he was very family-friendly.
“Nothing? Pity. What do you think, nicombots?”
Scratch and Grounder lit up in excitement. They had clearly been enjoying the show and were thrilled for the audience participation segment to begin. The drill robot held up a hand and hopped several times.
“Yessss, Grounder?”
“How ‘bout Mouse? ‘Cause he’s small and weak and didn’t know he was a fox!”
Robotnik immediately shook his head. “No, that’s too cute. The ruler of Mobius can’t have a minion called Mouse!"
Scratch held up a hand, and was called upon..
“Demon! Because that sounds evil, and everyone will know that he works for you!”
Better. The magnificent soon-to-be dictator stroked his equally glorious mustache and said, “Tempting. Maybe when he’s older. No one’s going to look at that-–” he waved at the fox—”and see a threat. For now, he needs to be a reminder of my dominance.”
The juices were slowly breaking through the dam. Thinking aloud, if only to drive Sonic ballistic, the evil genius said, “Robotnik Junior is already taken, even if he is a disappointment. Perhaps I’m overcomplicating this. ‘Pet’ would be simple enough to remember.” He glanced over at Sonic to gauge his thoughts.
The hedgehog growled at him. A good score, but he could do better. ‘Pet’ was just too obvious.
“Hmm… Stealing one of his old nicknames isn’t clear enough. No terrified Mobian will know what he is if he’s called ‘little pal,’” he said with disgust. His pet’s name needed to inspire some amount of respect or fear for the new world empire while simultaneously degrading Sonic’s legacy.
Out of the corner of his eye, Robotnik saw something that made the official best day of his life even better. The fox, like his fellow minions, had raised his hand.
“Yes, brat?”
“Uhmmm…” The kit messed with one of his tails, before mustering up the courage to suggest, “What do you think of Bite?”
Robotnik frowned. He was hoping—
“Or… or… Freak?”
He paused. Like ‘Pet’, it was somewhat obvious, but… Sonic flinched back hard. Quills raising, his glare threatened to unleash a castle-full of sharp objects on him. A bombardment that would make the snowstorm from earlier look like a slight mist.
“Not bad,” Robotnik said. “Maybe I’ll try that one out later. For now, I think we can do better.” Freak was an apt choice for the brat, but letting him choose his own moniker weakened the point.
Names, insults, and random nouns were thrown back and forth for the next few minutes. Grounder and Scratch suggested mostly stupid ones. The fox didn’t offer many, but they were usually decent.
Sonic’s reaction became less extreme over time, unfortunately, as the truth of his defeat sunk its claws into him. That was nice to see in its own way, but the painful screeching would be missed.
This was why the fox’s name needed to be a reminder of his defeat. It would pry the wound open and keep it that way. Seeing his little friend grow into whatever mold Robotnik designed for him would guarantee a steady stream of salt directed right into it. Sonic’s kit was now Robotnik’s to use–that had to be the point.
“Of course!” A bulb made of light pollution went off in the mad scientist’s head.
The fox perked up, eager to learn what he was to be called.
Robotnik smiled gleefully at him before pointing at the hedgehog. “You have finally lost, rodent. Speed can’t save the day now.” With several slow steps, he invaded Sonic’s personal space. Grabbing his ear, he whispered too low for anyone else to hear, “Just think! If you hadn’t insisted on dragging that bothersome brat along, none of this would have happened.”
He backed up, letting the anticipation build. Sonic stared at him, naturally frozen.
“Drrrumroll, please!” Scratch began clanking his metal hands against his legs. Grounder did the same to the side of his head.
The doctor placed one hand on the fox’s back and pushed him forwards. Due to the earlier order, he still wouldn’t look at Sonic, so Robotnik quietly rescinded it.
“Sonic, meet the first part of my mechanical rule over Mobius: my little Gear!”
I’m working on my next chapter of Flying Freaks rn, and I’ve come to a point where I can either split this chapter into two or just post a longer one… sometime in the future. At least two more weeks probably. (I am really busy right now)
So, thoughts?
Split it or create a Mega-Chapter
Split it! At super-sonic speed!
Double or nothing (I’d rather wait)
Who are you?
Flying Freaks: Silver Links (3/7)
Ao3
Part 1, Part 2, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7
Does this count as Wholesome Sonic & Tails Wednesday? Sonic isn't in this chapter much. That is somehow a bigger red mark than the fact that Tails is currently kidnapped. He and Cream are being cute kids, at least.
...............................................................................................................................
...............................................................................................................................
All the cries the bunny had been holding in grew and grew. She tried to breath, like her mama taught her, but it didn't work right. The sad, scared feeling took up every space it could before spilling out.
The bigger kid rubbed her back soothingly. She leaned further into his chest fluff. Slowly, her cries softened into hiccups, as the emotional outburst exhausted her
Cream played pretend for a moment. The soft fur was her mother's. It was almost bedtime, and Mama agreed to read her an extra story. The cozy embrace was her baby blanket wrapped snug around her.
The cold, heavy metal around her ears made pretending really, really tough.
Blinking open her tear-filled eyes ended the game for good. Her blankie was blue-green and yellow. She liked it because it reminded her of a young Chao. Whatever was wrapped around her was an orange y-brown with white tips, more like Chocola.
Tails. They were tails.
Cream finally looked up at the kid holding her.
"Is this a nightmare?" she said so softly it might as well have been a whisper.
The rubbing paused for a second.
The fox loosened his grip and sat back. His tails remained gently wrapped around her, which was nice.
"Sorry," he said. "We're awake."
"Oh…"
The older kit paused for a moment. He was frowning, but he also looked like he was thinking about something super hard. He tucked her into his side, half-facing the rest of the room.
"You were really brave back there," he said matter-of-factly.
The complement surprised her. She didn't feel very brave. She felt little and scared and sad.
"Really?"
The fox nodded. "Yeah! That pumpkin-head's tough and mean, but you did a good job keeping your cool."
Her eyes lowered. She wasn't sure about that, but… "Thanks."
When she didn't say anything else, he continued. "I'm Tails, by the way. Cause, y'know." He jiggled his tails a little, but not enough to dislodge her. The fluff tickled her chin and she let out a giggle.
"I'm Cream."
"Nice to meet you." His smile made the cage feel a bit brighter.
She wiped a few of the tears from her eyes. He might think she was brave earlier, but it felt easier with a friend.
Now, she felt strong enough to ask the biggest and hardest question.
"Mr. Tails, what's going on?"
He bit his lip, and his eyes flickered to the door. Cream squirmed a little bit.
Meeting her gaze, Tails explained, "That Katella lady wants to have a bunch of really unique people."
"Why?"
Tails shrugged helplessly.
"I forgot you two weren't there to hear about that," another kidnapped person interjected.
Mama said interrupting people was rude, but you sometimes had to be patient about it, because other kids might forget.
Cream turned to the older bird who spoke. Even though she wasn't a kid, the bun decided it was probably one of those times.
"Gran-gran?" Tails asked.
"She's really bored." Her annoyance shone through her tone, but she at least tried to temper it. Her wing feathers slid against the bars as she gestured. "The girl wants some entertainment and mayhem, and that's what we're for. Not a great reason for kidnapping if you ask me. No revenge, very little scandal. The money is hardly even a part of it!"
The words faded into the space between the cells. It became a struggle to breath. Cream's eyes trailed across the room, realizing just how many people were already here. In cages. Probably missing their families as much as she missed hers, all because a stranger was being mean for no good reason.
Tails nudged her head into his shoulder, resuming his calming movements. She didn't cry, but it took a moment for her float back down
"Thanks," she sniffled. She sat up beside him against the bars, only one of his tails wrapped around her. "You're really nice."
The tails around her swayed a little bit, like they were trying to wag. Tails looked down to the floor, a bit embarrassed. "I'm just tryna do what my brother would."
Her stomach sank.
"You have a brother, Tails?" Gran-Gran asked.
He nodded.
"Does he have two tails, too?" Cream added on, worried.
The question hit her new friend's funny bone, judging by his face. "Uh—no. We're not blood brothers. We're not even the same species."
"Trust me, kid," a white bear from a third cage said. "There ain't anybody like him."
They didn't sound like they were trying to be mean, yet Tails frowned anyways.
"That reminds me," Gran-Gran mused. She eyed her and Tails' cage like it was a elementary schooler's math homework. "How'd you catch Katella's attention, Cream?"
The bunny played with the end of her ear as she tried to come up with an answer.
"Gran-Gran!" someone hissed.
"What! It might be important! You saw what Katella was doing!" While speaking to the person on her other side, she gestured with her wing towards the counter..
White light bounced off a metal band near her shoulder. Her plumage hid most of it.
Tails sat up straight. They both stared at it, hearts stopping in unison.
Cream shook her head. It felt a bit fuzzy—and not in the normal way—as she tried to think. The weights on her ears pulled them uncomfortably. She fidgeted with them, feeling out the smooth, curved metal.
"Ma-Mama says that my flying is special…"
Despite her quiet voice, the statement seemed to send an explosion through the room.
The tail wrapped around her flinched and fell. Tails leaned away.
Discomfort prickled underneath her skin, where his eyes zeroed in on her arms, her ears, the metal bands. She couldn't understand the look in his eyes, nor why his brain looked like it was going a trillion miles per hour.
"Fly?" In Gran-Gran's cage, the duck's jaw fell open. Several others did too, but a few looked angry for some reason. Even the old albatross looked taken off guard.
Cream shrunk beneath all of the attention, gripping onto the end of her ear tighter. "Is-is that bad?"
"No!"
The question knocked Tails out of his trance. He noticed her grip and replaced her ear with his paw. "No, it isn't bad." He took a deep breath, holding her hand tightly. "It's just…" His mouth opened and closed several times, not finishing his sentence.
"Stranger by the day," Gran-Gran laughed quietly. The handful of people not fixated on Cream looked to her as she broke the short silence.
The last parts of the albatross's shock vanished quickly. "I'm 150 years old and I've never seen such a thing. 'Special is underselling it, little lady." She pointed her thumb to her own chest. "And I, for one, am thrilled to welcome you to the High Fliers Club. Our meetings are early in the morning at the top of the tallest tree."
Cream couldn't make that! She didn't even know where the tallest tree was!

Sonic followed the shuttle all the way to its base. Unfortunately, he had no way of getting up to the larger vessel, floating high in the sky. Over the ocean, no less.
Running in literal circles on water didn't do much for him. There was no helpful sea monster or extremely localized tsunami or underground volcano that could give him a lift either. Thus, when another shuttle boosted off the ship, he loyally tailed it.
...............................................................................................................................
If there was one good thing about having robots as servants, its that they could clean up without rest. As long as they were not causing a bigger mess. Robotnik chose to believe that they—or whatever gods were out there and not pissed at him yet—would make it so the front lawn was back in shape the next time he went for a walk.
That left him free to cook up a new scheme. This section of the world was in such chaos right now that it seemed a waste to do nothing. Everyone was so focused on the kidnappings—including Sonic—that they would completely miss him usurping the government!
There was an obvious problem with this plan: he also had no way of predicting Katella. She might capture Sonic, his foxy friend, or one of Robotnik's own creations at any time. How was he supposed to play ball when the bases could be ripped away at any moment?
"Oh," he sighed. "If only…"
DING DONG
Pulling up a camera sent Robotnik feinting into his chair.
Katella the Intergalactic Huntress was here! Standing at the front door with a hand on her hip, visibly two seconds away from busting the entire thing down.
Robotnik immediately closed all the tabs of her face on the screen and pressed a button to let her in.
"Madam Katella! What perfect timing…"
"Save the pleasantries," she said while walking down the hallway, knowing he could hear her over the security cameras. "I've been told that your the worst villain in town. I wanted to come by to make sure that we are not stepping on each other's toes."
"Hardly," Robotnik assured. "But I am always happy to have you here. I'm quite the fan of your work."
Katella smirked. "Likewise. Unfortunately, I have to admit that you only showed up on my radar recently."
"I'm flattered regardless." Robotnik spun around, readying himself to greet her. "And I am honored to welcome you to my lair."
Katella, in all her exquisite beauty, strutted through the door with one hand locked on her hip and a smirk fully loaded. "I suppose the pleasantries were warranted after all."
Robotnik laughed and pulled up another chair for her, like a gentlemen. She ran her hands over it with delicacy, before sitting down.
"With you? Always." Robotnik put a hand over his heart and bowed slightly, as was befitting a gentlemen. "May I offer you a drink?"
"Some grape juice, if you have it."
The doctor slammed a fist against the control panel. "SCRATCH! GROUNDER! Bring some grape juice to the control room! I want it YESTERRRRR-DAY!"
"Y-huh-since-"
He silenced the reception and turned back to his guest with a polite smile. "It will be just a moment."
Katella ignored his words, eyes on the panel. "Scratch and Grounder? Two of your creations?"
"Why, yes! Though I sometimes wonder if they were switched at activation—"a single raised eyebrow set him off course—"Yes!"
As soon as the words came out of his mouth, he remembered who he was talking to. Leaning against the control panel, he stuck out. "If you are looking to take them, I am not opposed to making a deal. No need for duplicity, as fun as it is."
"I have a different definition of necessary than most." Katella tucked her knuckles underneath her chin. "Regardless, I came for the conversation, not the circuitry."
Robotnik's blood was pumping. At this rate, his face was going to be as red as his suit. It wasn't every day a person as beautiful as the ginger-haired fiend sought out his company.
The door to the control room SLAMMED open.
"Here you go, boss!"
"No, I want to be the one to give it to him!"
Robotnik threw his arm out. "Just set it down!"
"YES-" Scratch saluted.
"SIR!" Grounder pulled a table and chilled bucket out of his chest. When he closed the compartment, both he and his counterpart spontaneously sprouted bow ties. The chicken set a two bottles with long snouts into the bucket and began rolling them over to Robotnik and his guest. He bowed.
Grounder used his nose to pull out the cork of a third bottle.
"I asked for grape juice." The doctor hid his face in one hand.
"Yeah! We grabbed the juice bottles with grapes on them," Grounder said stupidly. "There was an entire room of them in the basement!"
"See—oh wait. This says… Chenin Blank?" The chicken looked around, as if a friend could give him an answer. "That's a kind of grape juice, right?"
Robotnik's countenance was growing redder. He waved a fist at his creations, prepared to go on a rant.
"BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"
Katella threw her head back into the chair cushion, screaming laughter to the heavens. Her legs kicked up and down, boots loudly clicking against the floor. Holding her stomach through her cackles, her joy blinded Robotnik t everything else in the room.
The two robots looked at each other, before simultaneously turning their gazes to their boss and then his guest.
While gasping for air and trying to hold onto her stomach, Katella stood up from the chair and walked towards Robotnik. He leaned back on the consol as his eyes went wide. With both hands, the huntress grabbed his and clasped them in the air between them.
"Marry me," she huffed out through tears.

Final Chapter of Brain Freeze is Out!!
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
It's done!!!! Writing this story has been so fun. Starting with a more AOSTH-like tone and letting the story get darker while still retaining some elements of it was a really delightful experience. If you guys have any more episodes of AOSTH/Sonic Boom for me to base a fanfic on, please let me know! It might take a while if I get absorbed back into one of my other projects, but I'll try to keep the suggestions in mind!
I also want to work more on that Team Sonic/Dark Roleswap AU I thought up. Maybe try my hand at some art or some oneshots.
Thank you all so much for reading!
The final chapter of Brain Freeze will be coming out later today!!!!! I also have a potential bonus chapter if anyone is interested—it’s a rewrite of some scenes from Tails’ POV
Brain Freeze, Chapter 4: Time Out of Mind
ao3
Most of these people are cartoon villains who exist to pollute the environment. They are having a great time.
Two of these characters are in a angst fic. Only one of them realizes this.
I don't know what else there is to say, folks.
Part 1, 2, 3, 5 (Complete)
.................................................................................................................................
Whatever happened next was a bit of a blur for the hedgehog. Not the fun kind that came with the wind rushing past his ears and momentum pushing him on during a run. This blur was slow. Agonizing. It felt like he was staring up at a cloudy night sky, knowing that the sun would never rise and the stars had all burnt out. Yet the rest of the galaxy was moving on.
A bunch of shapes and colors made a cacophony in his periphery. Nothing and no one breached whatever impenetrable bubble had surrounded him. With one exception.
At one point, something—probably Scratch and Grounder—dragged him to a prison cell. He fought all the way there, even if what was left of his heart wasn’t in it. The robots could probably tell, since no growls or muffled curses left his lips on their short journey.
Tails stayed in the control room with Robotnik. A quiet voice in his big brother didn’t understand why. It would be better for the fox to remain within his sight. The kit wasn’t supposed to go off on his own. He was still too little. Most of the time, he followed that rule. Why wasn’t he now?
The hedgehog wanted to re-instate that ban. That way, he would at least know what was being done to his friend. As it was, his imagination was going haywire on a hamster wheel. Would Tails become little more than a servant? Waiting on his enemies hand and foot, even lower on the ladder than Coconuts? Or would Robotnik choose to mutilate him even more? A cyborg soldier or a parade attraction?
Sonic stewed in his fear and hatred for what felt like weeks. He registered that he had been tied up in a dungeon, but quickly disregarded that fact.
He was way past caring.
.................................................................................................................................
The two robots danced and sang their way all the way back to the control room. They won! Really, actually won!
When they returned, their Glorious Leader was sitting on his chair. He stared at the fox brat with a hand on his chin and a contemplative look.
Scratch and Grounder saluted him. “Sonic’s tied up in his cell!”
“And there’s nooooo way he’s getting out, your horribleness!”
The announcement drew Robotnik’s dark eyes towards them. “Finally!” He turned around to face the monitor. “With that hedgehog weighed down, I can finally take over Mobius!” He hit a few buttons and the schematics for the Updated Servitude Chips came up. “Oh, how glorious is my genius!”
“Very glorious, Master!”
“Yeah! No one is more glorious than you!”
“Super!”
The last voice caught Robotnik in a snare, once again reeling his attention towards Gear.
“And then there’s you…” the doctor muttered. “I will just have to get used to it I suppose. For now…” He turned to Scratch. “The three of you will join Coconuts on sanitation duty. Go clean the bathrooms.”
“WHA-OF COURSE O GLORIOUS MASTER!” Grounder said, the chip suppressing his protests with great vigour.
Scratch bowed again. Gear nodded and followed his two superiors
Once they were out of earshot, Grounder grumbled. “Whatever Master says—I just wish it wasn’t sanitation duty.”
Scratch smacked him. “Agreed! But it’s not right to say stuff like that!”
“But you just did,” Gear pointed out from their shadows.
Scratch turned around and grabbed him by the scruff. “What did you just say to me, you little brat!”
Gear blinked. “You agreed with him.”
Scratch’s beak clanged as he clamped his mouth shut.
“Haha!” Grounder laughed. “The fox got you there!”
“You shut it!” Scratch said. “Listen Gear. Master said that you had to obey us, and that means you're even more worthless than we are!”
“And we’re scrap metal!”
Gear scrunched his brows and opened his mouth.
Scratch reached out a hand and grabbed his muzzle. “So shut it!”
Their Master’s pet frowned, but nodded.
“Now, cmon, freak! We’re gonna make you and Coconuts clean all the toilets!”
Scratch roughly dragged Gear all the way to the bathrooms. The kid never fought back, but that didn’t make the experience any kinder.
.................................................................................................................................
Robotnik looked over his plans for the mass-produced chips. It was so satisfying to see it all come together. (A thought itched at the back of his brain, however, as if he was forgetting something… Ehh, his genius could figure it out later.)
The hedgehog was in such a state of disrepair that it would make Mama Robotnik look sound of mind, his Freeze-o-matic was ready, and the mass production of his free tickets to world domination were within sight. The doctor was ready to pass “Go” a million times over and collect two trillion Mobiums!!!
Even with his excitement, he couldn’t help but pause as he looked over his original plans. The ones he made before realizing Sonic was at Mount Splatterhorn.
Now that his main problem was gone, he was presented with a new opportunity. A chance to truly enjoy his meal as he gobbled up the planet.
Where was the fun in everyone just immediately falling in line? Why not incite a few fruitless little wars to enjoy? He could turn the entire world into his own personal board game, and he had some excellent pieces to experiment with.
.................................................................................................................................
Coconuts could hardly believe his ears or eyes when he found out.
“He’s actually on our side now?” he asked, looking the fox up and down.
“Mhm!” Grounder nodded enthusiastically. "This is Gear!"
It wasn’t long before the three robots had shoved all the work on the little kit. They did the bare minimum by scraping a wet sponge across the floor, before telling the mutant to mop it up. Then he had to polish the toilets, clean out the pipes, dust the ceiling fans, sweep up the dust, and pull the flowers and non-invasive species out of the garden. The robots poked and tripped him up whenever they could. He took it all silently.
Gear’s final chore was to pour expired egg whites and waste from the labs into the garden’s water supply. He was left with bruises that were impossible to see under all the mud caked into his fur. By that point, it was a few hours past midnight and the kit was as exhausted as he was dirty.
Coconuts sighed, crossing his arms. Staring sadly at the wobbling fox, he said “I guess there isn’t anything else to be done tonight.”
Gear passed out on the spot.
The robots stared, somewhat confused.
“Uhhhh,” Grounder said.
“Should we just–” Coconuts mimed sweeping.
“Ohh!” Scratch snapped. “I have an idea!”
He raced back into the fortress. After a few awkward and quiet minutes, he came back with a tiny metal cage. Picking up the kit by a tail, he shoved him in.
“There! This can be his first bedroom!”
The robots chuckled and made their way back inside, Gear in tow.
.................................................................................................................................
The next morning saw Robotnik yelling and banging against the door to Scratch’s charging room.
It quickly flew open, and Scratch threw himself across the threshold. “Terrible morning, oh glorious leader!”.
Pointing to the floor, the doctor remarked, “What is terrible is the mud on my floor! That leads straight to your room!”
Scratch’s beak fell open as he finally noticed the tracks. He stuttered cluckingly for a moment. “But Gear—I mean we all cleaned up so well yesterday!”
“Like I have any reason to believe you! You're my creation and I am as dishonest as they come! Now tell me, where is the source of that stench!”
Scratch pointed behind him to the small cage dangling from his ceiling. Gear let out little uncomfortable gasps from behind the bars.
“Right. Him. Why is he in your room?”
“We-well, your evilness, he fell asleep last night.”
“I can see that, you nicombot. Bring him to the lab. And tell Coconuts to clean this up, and you and Grounder need to get started on those eggs!”
Robotnik sighed as he looked at the fox’s prone, disgusting body. This was extremely annoying. Thanks to those dumbots, he now had to worry about his pet getting an infection. It would be a lie if he said he was not a little pleased with the abuse, but this was a long-term investment! What’s the point if the brat gets crippled or killed because his other slaves are too stupid?
He slapped on some surgical gloves and inspected the kid’s wound from the chip operation. It was rather small, and it didn’t seem like an infection had fully set in. Robotnik may have not been that sort of doctor, but he could certainly muddle his way through this.
As he disinfected the cut, he firmly decided to use the freak as a part of the spectacle of his conquest rather than a petty cleaner. Some cyborg enhancements should be enough to cover for the fact that he’s not very capable without his pal. Though making everyone aware of the fact that he was once the Hero of Mobius’ sidekick may prove a tad difficult—he’s far from Sonic’s level of infamy.
Regardless, he had to be healed so Robotnik could break him in the right way.
The (very much not a medical) doctor left his pet prone in the corner of the lab once he was done with tending to the wound. Gear was bound to wake up soon enough; it wasn’t like Robotnik gave him anesthesia or painkillers. He wrote a note saying “stay here”, left it right in front of the brat, and went to enjoy his eggs.
And they were delicious. While eating, he ordered Scratch and Grounder to patrol the lair until sunset. He also told Coconuts to get back on sanitation duty alone.
Once he finished, the mad scientist returned to the lab. He found Gear resting his head on his hands, still lying belly-down on the table.
Gear focused as the doctor entered the room. His hands fell and he bowed his head. His Master ignored him and returned to his workstation.
He performed some routine inspection and inventory on all his greatest inventions. The Slow-Go Beam Weapon, the Super Supreme Stopper Zapper, and his Eggmobiles, among others.
There was a missing bolt in one of the Eggmobiles. The bin holding that type of bolt was located in one of the storage closets attached to the lab. And it was the worst one.
Robotnik sighed as he opened the door. This storage room was a quirk of the building’s design. It was tall and narrow, dropping down to the floor below. Old, forgotten projects, discontinued products, and rarely used parts were kept here. There was also a rather outdated control panel for the entire base hooked up to the wall opposite of the singular entrance. It was difficult to see through all the junk.
With all of the storage bins, there was no room for walkways, so the doctor installed a mobile ladder that hung from the ceiling. As long as he had a sturdy grip, it could bring him anywhere in the storage room. It was still a pain to rummage around until he found the right parts.
However, there was a way to sidestep the process this time.
“Brat! Get me an elescalator bolt from that shelf!”
Gear jumped off the table. The wound on his back was close enough to his tails to give him a little trouble. Regardless, he drifted into the supply room and down to the bin. He rummaged around before silently holding up two types of bolts.
“The one on the left!”
The kit gave him a confused look..
Robotnik glared. “If you have something to say, say it!”
A small smile slipped across the kit’s face for a fraction of a second. “My left or your left?”
“My left!”
Gear nodded and brought him the right bolt.
Robotnik was far from impressed, but at least he didn’t have to go in that damned closet.
He sent the kid on a few more errands. Gear’s knowledge of tools was sorely lacking, but he occasionally surprised Robotnik with his initiative, grabbing the right part before he could ask.
All in all, he was… not a terrible lab assistant.
By lunchtime, the kit had earned enough of Robotnik’s faith that he was sent to deliver Sonic one of two meals for the day.
A few new rules were installed in Gear for this task:
You are extremely happy to do this because you hate Sonic the Hedgehog, and watching him suffer makes you warm and giddy inside.
You will not speak to Sonic unless he refers to you by name or as Robotnik’s belonging.
If he calls you “Tails”, rip out one of his quills.
And Robotnik made sure to emphasize the first rule he ever gave the fox after inserting the chip: Your only loyalty is to Robotnik and his empire. You are to obey no one else.
.................................................................................................................................
The hedgehog’s stomach rumbled. He did not register this, too caught up in the slow, shaky pumping of blood in his head and shoulder. He wasn’t sure how much he slept last night, if at all. The bite on his shoulder ached, itched, and burned all at once. There was nothing else to distract him but his fear, so he would take the pain and the cold, stale cell.
He had heard spooky stories before. Ones about creatures of the night that terrorized and entranced their victims before sucking out their life force, leaving them as empty husks or worse. The fangs that dug into his flesh did not belong to a horror movie monster, but the results were certainly similar.
Robotnik was truly a plague.
Sounds from the cell’s locks releasing echoed through the sterile prison. Sonic ignored it, preparing to tune out any of the tyrant’s taunts.
Then, familiar, pattering footsteps approached him.
The hedgehog shrunk into himself as much as possible. It wasn’t much, since chains and weights circled around his limbs and bolted him to the floor. Sturdy metal, designed to withstand his power and prevent him from spin-dashing. He couldn’t escape this, even if he was willing to try.
And the tether binding the remains of his will to this fortress was approaching him with plain bread, water, and a few raisins.
He wasn’t ready for this. He could never be ready for this. Some part of him would always be waiting to wake up from this nightmare, or just die once his body finally figured out that there was a cavity where an essential part was supposed to be.
The hedgehog’s need to check on his little brother eventually won out.
The kid looked… not great. He was clearly in need of a dunk in a river, a good night’s sleep, and a few extra meals. There were no new (visible) wounds, at least.
“Tails…”
Despite the scratchiness in his throat, the name snuck out.
The fox emotionlessly set down the food out of arm’s reach. He walked behind Sonic and roughly yanked out two of his quills.
Sonic hissed, and didn’t say anything else. He stared at his little brother, unsure what to do with the grief filling his lungs.
Tails picked up the food tray and sat across from his older brother turned enemy. He glared and held out the piece of bread for him to nibble on.
Sonic’s stomach rumbled at the moment he most felt like puking.
“Please… please…” he whispered. There was no hope left in him, not after seeing his brother’s spark die. He didn’t know what he was saying. Some sort of muscle memory or echo of the person, the hero, the picket fence he was before used him to speak to the empty shell of his home. “You’re not a follower, kid. You have more potential than anyone I know. Don’t let him convince you that you can’t do anything by yourself.” Sonic huffed out a humorless chuckle, breaking eye contact to stare at the floor. “I know that you have more greatness in you than anyone—even I—can see. Just… listen to yourself.”
He didn’t look up.
The coarse bread bumped his nose. The hedgehog’s awareness jumped to the forefront, but his reflexes were lacking at the moment. He raised his head to look at the fox, his breath stuttering.
The offending piece of bread pushed on his lips. It was hard enough to be a bit painful, so the hedgehog finally bit the bullet.
.................................................................................................................................
The doctor allotted Gear a short amount of time to eat his own lunch before he returned to the lab.
Then, Robotnik gave him a few small tasks to handle while he made plans to set up a casino on Mount Splatterhorn. Once the snow finished melting, he could use it to drain the pockets of both residents and tourists. From there, he could expand his influence, draw some attention from the world leaders, and incite absolute carnage. He looked up from drawing out his plans to find that hours had passed in his fervor.
He deserved a treat for this much evilness! Perhaps he should have a long, luxurious bath this evening. Ahhhh, now that sounded nice.
Tempted beyond all reason by this idea, Robotnik snapped his fingers to grab Gear’s attention.
“Follow me.” Robotnik strode towards the door, grabbing Gear’s cage on the way out. The kit trailed closely behind.
Robotnik showed him to his residential quarters. He set the cage down in the corner of the living room and pointed out the doors that led to the dining room/kitchen, his bedroom, and his bathroom.
“Draw me a bath and then don’t bother me for the rest of the night. Try to not get caught by the nicombots, I don’t want to deal with another infection. Just go entertain yourself. Don’t come back here until you're ready to go to bed.” He pointed to the small cage, making sure his pet understood his orders.
Gear left to prepare the bath. It was a large tub. Even with Robotnik’s advanced pipes, it would take over twenty minutes.
The tyrant knew just the way to pass the time.
.................................................................................................................................
“I’m feeling rather generous today, hedgehog.” Robotnik’s voice grated against his ears. The human remained standing. He held a medium sized plate with a metal covering hiding its contents.
The prisoner grit his teeth at the sight.
The doctor clicked his tongue to the non-reaction. “As I was SAYING, I felt like giving you something nice for your second and final meal of the day: a chilidog!”
He lifted the covering revealing a steaming, wondrous chilidog. As much as the hedgehog hated it, he had always been a fan of Robotnik’s recipe. It was simply too good. The smell alone normally brightened his day, ‘cause it meant that they would get some food and fun.
The cell was too dark and cold for any such joy to reach it. The hatred, the disbelief, the happiness at the meal was simply not there. The prisoner’s stomach filled with lead that numbed the rest of his body. He didn’t react outwardly to the chilidog, much to Robotnik’s delight.
“Ah, well if you don’t want it, I suppose I could eat it.” No reaction. “Or hand it off to my little buddy.” A finger gave the faintest twitch. “He did quite well as my lab assistant today, perhaps that deserves a reward.”
The hedgehog bit the inside of his cheek. The mad doctor stole and ruined everything, even when he was being “generous”.
Robotnik moved the plate back and forth trying to catalyze a bigger reaction out of his nemesis. Nothing.
He hummed, changing tactics. “Or, if you would prefer, I could make him despise chilidogs. Make him ill every time he smells one. That way, no one else will ever get to share one with him. Would you like that?” His voice was too deep to be called sickingly sweet, but the mockery of kindness was even worse.
The hedgehog’s hands clenched into fists. There was so little left of Tails. He had no way of stopping the doctor from destroying more of him and creating his own Gear from the rubble. It didn’t even matter what he said.
Robotnik faux-sighed. “I’m disappointed in you, Sonic. Here I am, offering you a gift, and you won’t even show a little thanks. I’ll give you plenty to be grateful for.” He forced the chilidog down the hedgehog’s throat and cackled when he choked.
“You really are a weakling. And I’ll make sure everyone knows it.” The tyrant smiled gleefully. “Here’s the plan: You will rot down here for however long I like. Meanwhile, I am going to violently and forcefully seize control over Mobius, with my perfect little champion at my side.”
The hedgehog tried to lower his head, but Robotnik grabbed his chin and cleaned off the mess from his meal.
Every part of him felt rubbed raw, so it wasn’t anything to write home about.
“I’m thinking of some technological enhancements, but that is less important than the cover story, in Gear’s case.” Robotnik continued matter-of-factly. “The entire point of showing him off is to highlight what a fool you are. And what better way of doing that than by making everyone aware of a simple truth?
“Gear–no, Tails has only ever been of use to me.”
Sonic tried to deny that absurdity, but the small word got caught in his throat.
“So, here is how the Robotnik Empire begins: a young little mutant is donated by his parents to the great doctor to use however he pleases. The doctor graciously allows the brat to serve him, eventually sending him out to spy on a menace causing problems. Who is that menace? Why—you of course!”
The anger and frustration building up within the hedgehog’s chest was so cold that it burned him. He could bring himself to do nothing but listen to these lies while his freedom and spirit were bound.
“The little fox lets his Master’s enemy think that they were friends. Lets the entire world think that he stood for goodness and freedom, when in reality, he was working against the hedgehog the entire time. And once the opportunity arose, Gear showed his true colors and captured the enemy.” Robotnik waved his hands about as if he were recounting a grand myth.
“It didn’t take the rest of the world long to realize that Sonic the Hedgehog’s beloved ‘little brother,’ Tails, never really existed.”
The hedgehog’s empty heart thumped. His focus wandered back to the pulsing wound on his shoulder. Maybe if he tried hard enough, he could pretend the doctor was the imaginary one. That would be nice.
He stared at the grey walls, ignoring the tirades until the doctor left.

“Patrol the lair,” were their orders. The chicken and the drill ran up and down and around. No one else was in or outside the fortress. Intruders were extremely unlikely. Even they knew that.
Scratch and Grounder decided, then, that they would keep an eye out for Gear. Tormenting him was bound to be at least a little entertaining.
Grounder made his millionth tread across the hard flooring, eyes set dead ahead. His processors were severely underwhelmed, as were Scratch’s. They had already been through every conversation topic and mean spirited prank they could think up. By sunset, their brains ran on empty.
The drill robot must have been really losing it, because he could have sworn he saw some movement out of the corner of his eye. Glancing over, it was nothing. Just a brown table with a fancy looking vase set up against a blank wall.
Could machines hallucinate out of boredom?
Scratch had moved on without him, so Grounder sped up. The older one sent him an annoyed look. It fell away quickly, and they refocused on the task at hand. Rather, they lost any potential distractions.
A loud CRASH promised to give them a new one.
“What was that?!” Grounder yelled. He held his drill-hands up to his head and surveyed the room.
“It was this stupid thing!” Scratch replied. He was sprawled out on the floor, holding up a banana peel.
Grounder gasped. “Coconuts!”
“What? No, are you stupid? This isn’t Coconuts!”
“But Coconuts is a monkey and monkeys love bananas!”
The two of them argued about the potential deep meaning of the banana peel as they continued down the hallway. The argument further devolved into complete nonsense.
“AHHHH!”
Scratch slipped on a second banana.
“Hahahaha!” Grounder pointed and laughed.
“Shut up! One banana may have been a coincidence, but this is targeted!” He threw the browning peel down and stomped over to the closest vent opening.
“Are you in there Coconuts!?”
“Hey! I was th-“ Grounder stopped behind his older brother, staring at something over his head. “Uh, what’s that?”
Scratch turned around to deliver an incredulous look before following his gaze.
On the wall across from them was a large, menacing silhouette. A monster with eight, clambering limbs and a cavernous mouth. The black lines slowly reached across the entire wall, pausing once the beast seemingly noticed them.
“M-M-MOONSTER!!”
Grounder immediately sprinted in the opposite direction. Scratch flailed, hot on his treads.
“FEED ME.” The voice that echoed through the hallways was scratchy and powerful despite not being extremely loud. If the robots had hackles, they would have been through the roof.
Speaking of, a large bolt fell from the ceiling, nearly clipping Scratch’s tail. He screeched and sped past his companion.
“Wait for me!” Grounder cried.
“Sorry!” Scratch tripped over a rope and onto a small patch of ice. He danced a jig, throwing out his lanky limbs all over the place until he found his balance.
A beam of light zapped his outstretched arm, freezing it into a chicken-cicle (chicken cube?)
“Ahh get it off get it off!” He waved it around, eventually getting knocked into by Grounder, who slid all the way across the ice like he was hydro-planing. The two slammed into a nearby wall. Luckily for Scratch, the impact broke the ice trapping his hand. The metal appendage was still freezing, however.
“FEED ME!”
The two robots scrambled to get up. They each pushed each other towards where they thought the monster was, calling for it to eat the other.
“Wait!” Scratch said. “We should feed the fox brat to it!”
“Perfect!” Grounder agreed. “Except we don’t know where he is! And we nearly got in trouble for roughing him up last night!”
“Ahh, you’re right.” Scratch slumped.
“I’ve got another idea! Follow me!”
Grounder flew down the hall, Scratch right behind him.
They seemed to lose the monster for a little while, but before long, there were beams of energy shooting at them from every which way. One hit a vase and turned it to stone. A second hit one of many paintings of Robotnik and caused it to float off the wall.
The bombardment eventually slowed down once the robots got to the prison wing. Grounder sped towards one in particular. Scratch skidded to a stop.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m gonna feed Sonic to the monster!”
“What will Master think?!”
“Better him than us! Plus we’ll get rid of the pest for good!”
Grounder messed around with his interchangeable limbs while Scratch pulled at his plumage and ground his teeth together so hard they let off sparks.
There was a loud, sudden movement from the doorway. Robotnik’s Super Supreme Stopper Zapper rolled in.
Without warning, it started firing at the two robots. Scratch jumped and flailed to get out of the way, while Grounder hunched over the door, still trying to get to Sonic.
After a few more desperate tries, it swung open.
.................................................................................................................................
The prisoner’s ears twitched as sounds of chaos came from outside his cell. What the hell was going on…?
He looked over to the door as the lock jiggled. His ears picked up what sounded like blaster shots from outside.
The door swung open, revealing a panicking Grounder.
He rushed over to the hedgehog and released him from the weights, chains, and bolts.
Sonic stiffened, hesitating as an opportunity finally presented itself. The little spark of hope he thought was gone for good flickered. If there was even the slightest chance, he owed it to that little fox to try.
He quickly spin-dashed Grounder’s noggin, stunning him.
Then, he rushed outside to find Scratch turned to stone. A shot from the Stopper Zapper near the entrance to the prison block landed near the hedgehog. On reflex,, he jumped out of the way.
Turning back, he grabbed Grounder and used him as a metal shield. He shoved the robot towards the machine and raced around to its back, not even blinking when the robot’s shout was silenced.
As he turned the corner, Sonic came face-to-face with his younger brother. He had no idea what to make of the fact that Tails was behind the control panel, but he could make sense of it later.
Before the kit had a chance to react, his brother grabbed him and booked it down the hallway.
With impressive speed, the kit immediately grabbed onto Sonic and took another bite out of his shoulder. Aggravating the already irritated wound. It made its anger known to Sonic, who winced in pain. The distraction slowed him down long enough for Tails to fly out of his arms.
The two of them stopped in a random hallway. It was in a state of pure confusion, if the banana peels in the distance, random stone objects, and floating portrait had anything to say about it.
Tails immediately flew down the hall. Sonic raced off in the same direction, but slipped and flipped over backwards.
The floor was icy to the touch, and even more slippery. The Stopper Zapper wasn’t the only invention that had been a part of this..
It took Sonic a few tries to escape the DIY ice rink. Tails had already vanished.
Taking a deep breath, Sonic reminded himself that he just needed an opening. He looked around the hallway, trying to come up with everything he knew about Robotnik’s base.
A shadow in the corner caught his eye. There was what seemed to be a terrifying monster dancing across the walls. Its shadow got closer and closer to the hedgehog.
Knowing a trick when he saw one, Sonic put his fingers up to estimate the angle of the light and shadow, and raced over to the nearest vent opening. It was a tad little for him. Thankfully, it’s not like he cared what happened to the fortress, so he spindashed through the system. The metal groaned and snapped as he made his way through.
After a bit of burrowing, he found a tall and thin storage room that seemed to take up two floors while having about one square foot of walkspace. There were some makeshift control panels set up around halfway up that Tails was trying to work. Near the top of the room was a door and a fold-down ladder connected to the ceiling. The storage room seemed to be a bin for all of the labs’ miscellaneous doo-dads.
Sonic grit his teeth. Scanning the contents of the room didn’t give him a lot of ideas.
Tails glanced down at him and seemed to speed up with whatever he was doing.
Tiiiiiiiiiiiiick toooooock went a clock shoved to the back of one of the shelves.
Sonic brought his hand up to his nose, desperately trying to think. He looked back up to Tails, muzzle once again a bit bloody.
It was a long shot, but maybe—
“Tails!” Sonic shouted.
The kit’s brow seemed to furrow, before he was shocked backwards. His tails sputtered as something in him forced his body down.
As the chip enforced one of Robotnik’s orders.
Scowling, the kit lowered. Reaching out a hand, he grabbed a few of Sonic’s quills and yanked.
Simultaneously, Sonic snatched the kids wrist and sprinted up the wall. He spiraled up the room so fast that the momentum destroyed most of it. Bins, the controls, forgotten pieces of scrap, and many other objects were sucked into the whirlwind. Even the ladder broke off. The cacophony did not stop even after Sonic dragged Tails into a lab.
The kit did his best to shake the grip from where he was being pulled along. And he would keep fighting.
Sonic couldn’t risk losing him, not now.
His solution was right in front of him. A large machine with three thin canons plated in permanent frost.
Before either of them had a chance to think, Sonic deposited the kit in the machine’s line of fire, raced behind it, and pressed a button. A snowy blast burst out of it, covering the Tails from his toes to the tips of his ears..
Gasping as he fully realized what he just did, Sonic dug through the pile of snow.
“Sorry, little buddy,” he whispered, barely holding off a meltdown.
A thin layer of ice enveloped the kit. Sonic picked up his no-longer squirming friend and raced all the way out of the fortress and to the closest town.
It was a few hours later when Robotnik’s bath finally turned luke-warm. He got out and dressed, humming to himself.
He finally remembered that there was a specific type of discontinued bolt used in the Updated Servitude Chip. He had a moderate stockpile, but he should probably do a tally.
Curiously, none of his robots came when he called them to carry out the errand. Not Scratch, not Grounder, not even Gear. Eventually he had to call for Coconuts, all the way down in the sewers.
Only a few minutes later, Coconuts crashed through his door shouting in a panic.
“Everything’s wrecked!”
Robotnik raced down to the lab, where there was a pile of snow on the ground. Then the storage closet, where all of the discontinued bolts and other pieces of equipment were scattered and broken. And then the jail cells, where he found two statues shaped like his servants and no rodent.
“I hate that hedgehog!”
