Chapter 3: Interlude - Chuck

Story Summary

Tom and Maddie had their work cut out for them when they decided to adopt three traumatized alien children. By curious happenstance, all three had been isolated and forced to fend for themselves due to circumstances outside their control. However, Tails presented a unique challenge.

While Sonic and Knuckles' circumstances were no less tragic, they spent a few years under the guardianship of someone who loved them. They had memories of being cared for, of receiving instruction on how to navigate the world. Tails had no such memories, and essentially raised himself. The differences between their youngest and his older brothers are subtle and pose challenges, but they’re all committed to helping Tails understand he’s loved and a member of the family.

This is something I drew a while ago for Sonic’s anniversary

Since Classic Sonic is in Crossworlds, I thought maybe Modern Sonic showed him how to use Extreme Gear.

Something I’d love to point out: I haven’t seen anyone say this abt Sonic so I’m gonna say it. Characters keep referring to Tails as ‘Sonic’s understudy’, which is an accurate term but not in the way they think. They mean it as something demeaning when it would be a compliment if they knew what it meant. Let me explain. An understudy is someone in plays/musicals/whatevers who learns the acts and lines of a main cast member, so they can step in if something happens to that cast member that leaves them unable to act. That is to say, if Tails is Sonic’s understudy, Tails is fully capable of stepping in to be the hero that everyone needs if something happens to Sonic. And he has done that several times.

So yea, Tails is Sonic’s understudy but that’s actually a good thing

They also use the word protégé, which literally means the one who is trained or whose career is furthered by a person of experience. It's not necessarily demeaning. it's just the way people say it and use it to objectify him as Sonic’s sidekick and nothing more. Tails feels the need to prove himself as a partner or ally, so although being called an understudy or a protégé isn't bad itself, he KNOWS that people use these terms as a means to remind him that he will only ever be Sonic’s sidekick. And you can hear his frustration in Crossworlds when he gets anything less than 3rd place saying, "I know I can do better." In comparison to Amy, who says the same phrase if she gets last place.

My boy loves working with Sonic, but sometimes people assume he's just a sidekick, just someone that Sonic tolerates, and they reduce him to just a kid even though he is more than a worthy adversary especially in a race like in Crossworlds.
