Fishing is good on the Apache!
In honor of National Hunting and Fishing Day, we would like to share with you some images and documents from our holdings here at the National Archives at Riverside.
“Fishing is good on the Apache,” according to a 1960 recreation map from the Apache National Forest. The accompanying text describes the National Forests as “America’s playgrounds” and Apache National Forest as a “land of many uses.” It’s no wonder that so many people flocked to this region to go fishing and hunting, along with many other recreational activities. In 1960, the Apache National Forest encompassed 1.7 million acres in both Arizona and New Mexico.
