Even If You Think You'll Never Use It, Learn How to Apex Jump
I’m not talking about the big, death-defying leaps. I’m talking about practical apex jumping (like you see here). Sometimes you need to be able to hop around an opponent, or over them (or both), and that requires knowing how to jump.
And it’s not just a jammer skill. There are lots of really scary blockers who use apex jumps—sometimes even clockwise apex jumps—to chase after or run back an opponent.
So... did I mention that last Sunday I managed a 180° apex jump?
I would like to say it was in scrimmage but it wasn’t - I was just playing around at the end of the session. I’m not sure how often a move like that would be called for but I was just thinking to myself “what if you knew you could take that apex but someone’s butt was a bit closer to the inside line than you would like?”. And I thought, “if you could avoid it but swishing around them in a 180° then it could be pretty sweet!”, so I gave it a go.
First time I didn’t get my footing right and fully went over onto my backside and into a backwards roll (hey if you’re going to fail the first time you may as well fail spectacularly!) but managed to do it pretty easily after that…
It’s probably just a pipe dream but you’ve got to aim high right?
*sigh* Jolly’s dreaming…
