I don't like this "pining" too! In general, the fandom tends to ramp up the colony-colonial master dynamics, but there's this tendency to ignore the dark undertones of this type of relationship that in the end gives me the creeps about how the characters are portrayed in favor of putting to the fore an idealized "familial" relationship. Sometimes it works, but plenty of times, it doesn't for me. I'm all for historical AUs, but not when it skews the historicity of the basis of the relationship.
Same thing here. I mean I enjoy seeing some fluffy stuff too and I don’t think everything NEEDS to be “dark” (There was this incredibly hilarious comic about Hong Kong giving England trouble) but when the art or writing is meant to be quite historical and to explore the attitudes of the period I find it a bit creepy if the colony-colonial master dynamic is portrayed as this totally warm, familial thing that is entirely positive.
It feels so inaccurate for me personally- also there was a very real thing called British paternalism where the British Empire saw itself as exporting the “light” of civilisation to the rest of us and saw its imperialism as more enlightened and kind than all the other European empires. That was a way for it to justify its imperialism. It is true the British treated some of their colonies better and did cultivate a class of educated locals- BUT- seriously, if you actually dared to challenge British rule they’d show no mercy and could be as brutal as the French or Spanish. So…portraying the entire thing as a nice familial relationship seems like replicating a fucked up colonial idea about how colonialism was justified to “civilise” us and it’s whitewashing history if it’s meant to be a historical fic/comic.
I enjoy using APH to explore real history but I think we need to all exercise some discretion? There was a comic I saw about post-independence India saying he was proud to be the “jewel of the crown” of the British empire and i was just, “hahaha…no” because unlike Hong Kong (which saw British rule as protection from the excesses of Mao’s China), there were lots of Indian anti-colonial rebellions and resentment against British rule.
It's also my pet peeve when England is portrayed as a nation pining away for America. I realize that America was the "first" colony in the New World but it wasn't the last either (hello Canada). And there's a reason why South Asia [India] was considered the "Crown Jewel of the British Empire".
oh god i personally dislike that so much too. I mean I understand we have our own preferences and our headcanons but I really don’t like that portrayal myself. In human AUs people have more leeway to write whatever they want, but if you’re writing them as nations I definitely think some attention should be paid to history.
I prefer England to be upset in a more angry and pissed, “How dare that ungrateful boy…” kind of way rather than pining. I’m okay with portrayals where he feels upset and betrayed but seriously I don’t see how he can be pining for years and years after that. In fact, the Anglo-American relationship was downright acrimonious at some points- like during the American Civil War, where the Union suspected that the British were considering recognition of the Confederacy. At least he DEFINITELY shouldn’t be pining STILL more than 200 years later- the loss of the US is not really something I see impacting English national consciousness that way today. Hell, by comparison, things like the Irish vs the English are still issues. As you mention, what about the additional colonies in Asia and Africa acquired around the time of Queen Victoria’s reign? British imperialism reached its height in 1922- where it held sway over 20% of the world’s population and controlled over 33 million sq km of territory. Not to mention I feel this pining tends to consume England’s character and swallow up all his other important relationships- like with France, Spain, Portugal, his brothers etc- to the point it makes it seem as though the Anglo-American relationship is all that disproportionately important.
I guess I also prefer the colony-colonial master relationship to be a bit more uneasy- the European empires were all extremely calculating and ruthless, and they first and foremost saw their colonies as a source of natural resources and tax revenue. So the pining thing doesn’t sit well with me when it is used to flanderise England’s relationship with America. I do enjoy reading those where England is a bit melancholy for a time where America was younger and more innocent but not to the extent that he's pining and so obsessed...
I really like your idea with the zombies! Imagine Gilbert kicking zombie asses and plays with a head like with a football and Ludwig is standing there thinking "Meine GĂĽte, so ein Idiot." (Oh my god, what an idiot) or something like that or maybe a big brother Gilbert protecting his little brother Ludwig. ^^ Oh god, your idea gave me inspirations!
zombies are best haha! do write or draw something about it!
everybody should read World War Z, btw- i love it because it actually is a pretty detailed look at a GLOBAL zombie apocalypse. Not just “everything happens in america” kind of dystopian movies/novels where like the rest of the world doesn’t exist lol
like how indians were retreating to the Himalayas and had to blow up the mountain pass. there’s even an interesting take on how Israel and Palestine put down their arms and up forming a unified state- the idea that maybe a common enemy can overcome differences? it’s pretty cool- it also goes into how the US Army had to completely retool and dust off Civil War-era battle tactics to kill the zombies because all the Americans were forced to retreat into a small safe zone in the Rocky Mountains and didn’t have all the oil resources, electrical supplies to maintain their high-tech weapons.Â
