Taking Charge
In the event of a major crisis that somehow leaves a nation without any leader(s) and at the time there is no way for a new leader to step up the nation personification has the authority to temporarily take charge and make all decisions for their country. Basically, they would become their own boss until the crisis has passed/order is restored/a new leader is rightfully appointed who is fully capable etc. etc.
Some major fast-food chains have a personification. They exist in their mascot.
During the time of the Black Death, all the nations affected by it had the plague as well.
War and the Nations
Every single one of the nations hates war. They only participate in it because their bosses make them.
The nations don't know when to quit their time as a nation, because everyday keeps getting better. New technology, new experiences, new features, there's always something that they look forward in the future. And this is what they teach to any of their own that they see struggling.
Each country was a regular human with a normal life before they became the country they were. All of them were close to death, be it illness, injury, or anything else. None of them remember their past lives, but from time to time they'll remember parts of them. And once they die as a country, someone will take their place.
