fanfic writing culture isn’t “oh dang! I wanted to write about this prompt with this character but someone else already wrote it, so now I can’t”.
fanfic writing culture is always “two cakes is better than one. the more the merrier. there can ever be enough fics of this character with this prompt!”
Make it exist first, you can make good later
"I don't want to read this" is totally valid.
"This is disgusting to me" is totally valid.
"I don't want to read this because it is disgusting to me" is totally valid.
"I don't think anyone should be allowed to read or write this because it is disgusting to me" is authoritarian.
"I don't think anyone should be allowed to read or write this because it is disgusting to me" is authoritarian.
Bro, blocking someone and then using their tag like this is, all offence, weak as fuck. Like all you had to say was, na bro I don't promote pedo protags on this here blog, because I wholly agree with the premise of your argument given contexts (i.e., writing abusive relationships to show the evils, great; writing abusive relationships to show the romance, yikes).
This response is so, so comically shitty within the context of that tag, oh my god.
"I don't think anyone should be allowed to read or write this because it is disgusting to me" is authoritarian.
"I don't think anyone should be allowed to read or write this because it is disgusting to me" is authoritarian.
"Censorship of some topics in fiction and art is good and I would be happy if it were to be enacted in a way I approved of"
and
"some things should be banned from ever being written or read about in fiction"
are both authoritarian viewpoints to hold and express, even if you don't have the power to enact them.
If you hold these viewpoints you are holding authoritarian viewpoints.
DUDE IT’S PEDO FICS EVERYBODY THINKS THEY’RE NASTY
Let me explain this to you in simple terms.
Something being nasty is not a good reason to ban fiction about it.
If we accept that "something being nasty is a good reason to bad fiction about it" then we give a foot in the door for all the people who truly, genuinely believe that queer people are nasty to ban all queer literature.
This is not about defending bad people this is about defending the freedom of good people from tyranny, you moron.
I think if you take it to its logical extreme. Say, banning people from writing stories of sexual abuse. That could then be said "well ANY talk about sexual abuse is bad."
And from that, you could ban books that talk about it irl. Or books like how to recover after being abuse. If its not something to be discussed AT ALL.
The fact that I’ve seen this post in some form on my dash like 100x and each time there’s new idiots who do not get that you can’t have *some* censorship.
Either you’re for it or you aren’t.
The moment you agree that something should never, ever exist in fiction is the moment that anything can be banned.
Remember a while back how Tumblr banned a bunch of tags, including many popular innocuous ones that even people who are for censorship used and were upset about?
When censorship happens, stuff YOU like can and will be banned. That’s how it works.
Remember how a bunch of people had their accounts terminated here only last year for writing about their own sexual abuse?
When you ban “pedo” topics, say, any talk of child sexual abuse in any form, that means people can no longer write about their own experiences. It means people cannot educate others so they can learn how to protect themselves or get help from these situations.
Censorship is authoritarian. Full stop.
Even if “everyone” agrees something is “gross” and “shouldn’t exist,” that does not fucking matter.
Do you know who generally believes queer people are gross and shouldn’t exist??
The same people who are banning books left and right solely because they have queer characters or relationships.
The same people who attack and kill queer folk for simply exisiting.
This is not just some fandom matter or a case of being chronically online.
Protecting freedom of expression is essential, and if you do not get that, I don’t know what to say to you.
And the people who keep bringing up child sex abuse as a reason for censorship are doing it very specifically because everyone feels like then they HAVE to agree with the person in favor of censorship.
It’s not that there isn’t widespread societal agreement on this. It’s that they want you backed into a rhetorical corner where you feel compelled to agree with them.
Also, like, we KNOW how this shit shakes out in fandom because it's happened before.
In 2007, Livejournal capitulated to the "pedophilia and sex crimes!" cries of (hate group) Warriors 4 Innocence, and you know what communities got shut down? Slashfic communities. Sexual assault survivor support communities. Authors who'd written non-smut m/m fic even got caught up in it. It was DEVASTATING to fandom spaces. I think pretty much everyone knew at least one person whose account was literally DELETED, or were a member of a community that was wiped off the map because they were considerate enough to include topics like "sexual assault" or "BDSM" in the profiles under the badly-named category of "interests" to indicate that posts on said blogs or communities may include discussion of things like that. Even if it was for a SUPPORT group. And it was because a group of religious bigots came to LJ and said essentially "EVERYONE thinks it's gross and that it's promoting CSA, we should ban it."
Like, strikethrough and boldthrough were a large part of what propelled AO3 out of a more unfocused conversation on one person's blog about hosting a site INTENDED for fandom content, into being an actual archive and nonprofit. And it's a large part of why you won't find AO3 banning topics that you find "gross".
Censorship is authoritarian and it will ALWAYS have more collateral damage than you can imagine.
Going to add that fiction which had sexual abuse and communities which played around with it as a writing topic are the very things that protected me from irl sexual abuse when I was a teenager. I was in a dicey situation, and realized that while my situation did not match up to any of the superficial or textbook cases mentioned in passing (if at all) through school, it matched up a LOT to what I'd learned about irl sexual abuse through works of fiction and the rhetoric of my communities. I got out of that situation and dodged what was, in retrospect, one hell of a nasty bullet. If it hadn't been for that "nasty" fiction and those "nasty" communities, I would very likely have been abused, and subject to further violence spiraling out from that abuse.
you can’t have *some* censorship.
Yup! It really is, in fact, pretty much that simple:
"I don't think anyone should be allowed to read or write this because it is disgusting to me" is authoritarian.
Storytime!
I had a friend. We were 12. We had just discovered fanfiction and were obsessed. We read anything and everything we could get our hands on. One of the stories we read was a "pedo fic." It exposed us to scenarios and language that hadn't ever been touched on in Sex Ed at school or with our parents. To be frank, it "corrupted our young minds with topics we shouldn't have to deal with." It also gave my friend words to finally describe why her neighbor creeped her out so much. "He's creepy and weird" gets a 12 year old scolded and lectured on being nicer. "He's a sexual predator" gets adults asking questions and involving the cops. Her neighbor "moved away."
Censorship is pro-pedo and anti-child-safety. There is no communicating what's wrong if there are no words to describe what's happening. Bad things will happen whether you have the words to ask for help or not. Censorship takes those words away.
"I don't think anyone should be allowed to read or write this because it is disgusting to me" is authoritarian.
“Bad things will happen whether you have the words to ask for help or not. Censorship takes those words away.”
Using "Search Within Results" in filters
or "Any Field" in the work search
Throughout the following tutorial, I refer to the Search Within Results field of the filters menu. These techniques also apply to the Any Field box in the work search form.
When you look at any tag on AO3, you'll have access to the filters menu. It will either appear on the right hand side of your screen if you're on a laptop, or it will pop out if you press the Filters button on a mobile device.
Down near the bottom of that menu, you can see a box labelled Search Within Results. This box allows you to search for specific terms in a fic's title, summary, author's note, and/or tags.
This field uses Boolean search terms: AND, OR, and NOT. Those words (the capitalization is important) combine with keywords to create more specific searches. You can also make use of the specific ID number associated with each tag. This reduces the text you need to type in, and it also accounts for all of the synonyms of a tag instead of just an exact text match.
I have a tutorial for finding the tag ID number over here.
You can enter as many keywords or terms into the box as you'd like, although there is a point at which the resulting browser url (which contains all of your filters) maxes out and the browser can no longer load your results. It hasn't happened to me, personally, but I've heard stories.
One example of how to use tag ID numbers to build out a results page of what you want to read is the following:
relationship_ids: 66194032 OR relationship_ids: 75960384 NOT relationship_ids: 66351727
The first ID is for Kip Grady/Scott Hunter, the second is for Ilya Rozanov & Svetlana Vetrova, and the third is for Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov.
This tells AO3 that I want to see fics that are tagged with either the first relationship or the second relationship, but I don't want to see fics with the third relationship (even if the other ships are tagged).
I'll still see fics tagged with Shane & Ilya or with any other relationships in Heated Rivalry, so long as either Kip/Scott or Ilya & Svetlana are tagged. I'll also see results with both Kip/Scott and Ilya&Svetlana tagged.
Where you are when you enter the filter will change how many results you see. So for example, if I enter this into the Search Within Results filter while I'm already looking at the Heated Rivalry (TV) tag, I won't get any results from the Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid unless Heated Rivalry (TV) is tagged too. That gets me 757 works.
I can enter it into the Any Field on the Works Search page to get all of the results from all fandoms, and then my results increase to 848 works.
You can also search for fandom_ids, character_ids, creator. Just combine your search terms with AND, OR, and NOT to specify if the term must appear, may appear, or must not appear in your results.
For more information on Search Within Results, I recommend this three-part news post from 2013.
I just published a fanfic and this is how I feel after seeing the stats go up
pouring one out for the AO3 Abuse Team people who will be flooded with false reports from Wattpad refugees about "disgusting" tags
"wattpad doesn't ban smut or taboo contents, they just ban smut without plot and taboo contents that glorify or romanticize taboo things" I know. and I also know that it IS still censorship. no censorship means nothing is censored. doesn't matter how it's written. doesn't matter if I also personally find some certain topics disgusting. no censorship means (fictional) things I hate are allowed to exist.
ao3 is against censorship, thus it allows smut without plot and taboo contents that are written in ways that glorify and/or romanticize the taboo things. that is also why people love ao3.
and no, people who love ao3 don't necessarily love the platform because they love smut or taboo contents. people who love ao3 have things ao3 allows that are triggering to them. they love the platform because they understand that censorship is a fascist tool and fiction is not reality. people are able to curate their own internet experience by filtering out things they personally find disgusting/triggering, things they don't want to see. but writers and artists should also have the rights and the freedom to create whatever they want, HOWEVER they want. ao3 gives writers these rights and freedom. as long as nobody in real life is harmed or affected. no authorities should be able to control what fictional things people create and/or consume.
AO3 is actually the perfect example of how not having censorship of any kind actually makes it *much easier* to avoid triggering or disturbing content that you don't want to see.
I almost never stumble into a fic with content that I'm not at all comfortable with, because the lack of censorship means that everybody tags their shit appropriately. It's super easy to read the ingredients on the tin of each fic and decide if it's for me or not. Meanwhile, on other social media websites where posts are getting incorrectly flagged for being NSFW and people are doing shit like censoring the words "death" or "kill," I end up seeing inappropriate or disturbing content all the fucking time, because it's *never* labelled, because people are afraid to label their shit with tags that might get it removed, so there's no way to filter any of it out!
If you are actually someone who really doesn't ever want to see NSFW content then that is completely possible on ao3 because M rated content is allowed on there, so it's all clearly labelled as such. if you have any "disturbing" topics or potential triggers you never ever want to see, it's easy to filter them out because ao3 allows things to be labelled with stuff like "pedophilia" or "dub-con" so everything is CLEARLY LABELLED! Of course there are going to be people who don't tag everything correctly but I've been on there for over a decade and I've hardly ever seen it happen. People take tagging etiquette very seriously, because it benefits everyone.
Remember how in Prohibition they banned all alcohol of any kind and so alcohol still existed in America but the production went underground and since none of the distilleries were being regulated, a lot of people ended up getting sick because there was all sorts of who knows what kind of toxic shit in their drinks? And then when America re-legalized alcohol, they were able to once again regulate the production of it and literally all alcoholic drinks became safer as a result? And instead of being sold moonshine in an unlabeled mason jar, now all alcoholic drinks have to have very specific information listed on them like alcohol content, ingredients, and allergen risks, so that people know exactly what they're putting in their bodies? Yeah this is a bit like that.
lmao if this person is talking about ao3, I am almost a hundred percent sure that they are straight up lying. because ao3 explicitly and specifically allows dark/taboo fics that were banned on other platforms.
ao3 was literally created with the main goal of being fully anti censorship and allowing fics that were deemed dark, problematic, disgusting, messed up, taboo. so no, ao3 won’t take a fic down for being dark, problematic, disgusting, messed up or taboo. those fics are the exact reason why ao3 was created in the first place. (x)
unless a fic actually violates ao3’s rules—by being a stolen work, mentioning money, donation, commission, or not actually being fanfic, original work, or fanwork—ao3 will not take any fic down.
so if this person is talking about “getting fanfics taken down from ao3”, it’s one of these cases:
they’re lying
the fics actually violate ao3’s terms of service, but this has nothing to do with whether or not they’re dark/taboo fics
the authors chose to delete the fics themselves
here’s the list of things you need to know if you’re new to ao3
let this be the year that you stop using your school (or employer) email address for your AO3 account
when you leave school or leave a job, you lose that email address. This means not only that you’ll lose any emails you have saved on that address but that you might lose your ability to access AO3. When you try to reset your password or recover your account, messages are sent to the email address on file.
your school or employer might block emails based on words contained in those emails. that means you might miss subscription notifications, comment notifications, or emails from the Policy & Abuse team trying to contact you. These messages won’t go to spam. They’ll just be outright blocked. You will never see them.
your school/work systems administrator has the ability to access and read your emails (not that they necessarily would, but they have that power)
if you’re still in high school, it’s possible that the school’s Acceptable Use Policy (similar to a Terms of Service) would allow your parents or legal guardian to access your emails, upon request
school and work email addresses often use some form of your real, legal name which you may or may not want connected to your fannish identity.
As you can see, creating a free email account with a different provider is probably a good idea for a lot of reasons unrelated to AO3, too. It might seem annoying, but it’s worth it.
If you need instructions for how to change your account’s email address, here you go!
AO3 Maintenance
AO3 will be down for about 2 hours starting at 08:00 UTC on August 21 (what time is that for me?) while we prepare some improvements to collection browsing. Please follow our status page for updates.

Our Commitment to Maximum Inclusivity
AO3 was founded partly in response to a growing trend of fanworks being removed from websites that had previously allowed them. This pattern has been observed numerous times throughout fandom history.
Whenever there are fears about censorship on other sites, AO3 sees an increase in the waitlist for our automatic invitation queue. Regardless of their reasons for joining, we welcome any new user to our site who agrees to abide by our Terms of Service. We will not vet new users for "legitimacy", because AO3 is for everyone.
The OTW has no plans to change the content we allow on AO3, and we stand by our commitment to maximum inclusiveness of fanwork content. We will not remove works unless they violate the AO3 Terms of Service, and we don't make decisions based on how many times something is reported. Users do not need to worry that anyone's works will be taken down due to a baseless report or a mass-reporting campaign, if one were to occur.
Regarding the unverified rumors that reports to the Policy & Abuse committee have greatly increased in the past few days, changes in ticket volume can be due to many different factors (including simple coincidence). If you're interested in learning more about how many and what kinds of reports the Policy & Abuse committee receives, we publish information about the previous month's tickets in our monthly newsletters as well as an annual breakdown of ticket types on the OTW website.

actually here's the study from the first panel for any sisi stans
One of my favourite things in urban fantasy literature is when an author clearly likes the idea of wizard boarding school drama, but wants to avoid getting any Harry Potter stink on them and tries to accomplish that by simply bluntly inverting all the stuff they regard as problematic, and in so doing independently reinvents the X-Men.
