Literary Criticisms

Divya and I decided to go together to Kresge Library to get our criticisms.  We had no idea where to go so we asked the librarian for help.  Her name was Emily and she spent hours with us picking and choosing the criticisms.  She was extremely helpful! We spent a total of three or four hours at the library.  After she pulled all of our books from different floors of the library, we had to scan the pages we needed since we couldn’t check them out.  Technically, you are not allowed to do that, but Emily hooked us up and told us not to tell anyone, whoops.  We had some problems with the scanner and made multiple runs to the tech support desk; aka showing we were definitely not OU students.  My major problem I had was I had a sprained ankle from soccer and we parked very far away since classes were in session and all the lots were full.  Didn’t stop there though, because I had to limp up the stairs to the second and third floor to get our criticisms.  But I got some Panera after so it was all good. @divyaramanathan

Challenge

So I originally decided to try and find a book on the limitations of society by going into Barnes and Nobles. I walked in and DEMANDED that they recommend a book to me that had the theme of the limitations of society. I ended up getting a book called Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy. Unfortunately when I asked Kreinbring about the book he said it was a great book just not for my topic. Time to start the process over again.

 I went to Barnes and Nobles again after doing some research this time. I figured that knowledge and wisdom would be a topic found in more books than limitations of society. I was left with a decision between two novels, 1984 and Flowers for Algernon. It was a tough decision but I didn't have time to waste so I picked the cheapest one. I have a good feeling about this book and look forward to reading it.

Picking my book

Im deciding to choose my book between either hopefulness or accepting death. Death to me is something that everyone must encounter in life and can be a miserable thing. Many of us have lost our loved ones, friends, or family and have beard the sorrow it seems to carry. I am familiar with this as I have had many of family members die and have learned to cope with such a tragedy. Also hopefulness is a good topic, because the feeling of hoping for something is extremely exciting. It test your faith and fills you with anxiety, on when that certain something is gonna happen.

I'm thinking of two abstract topics to write about. I want to do either Limitations of Society or Knowledge and Wisdom.

Confusion turns into Clarity

I go to Kensington Community Church which is a Christian church, some would say it’s not a “church” at all hence the giant slide in our lobby or the coffee shop and balcony we have with two tv screens to show the pastor if you can’t see him during service. But I believe Kensington is the best church I’ve ever attended. I was struggling on figuring out what topic to choose and I have had a lot going on recently in my life with family problems leading to financial problems and much more that has become unbearable as a teenager so it feels. So lately I have been very mellow and easily angered or depressed, which straight up sucks.

So coincidently the series were in right now in church is about getting free from your hurts, hang-ups and habits. There was a book for sale in the lobby about helping yourself reach happiness through a few steps and becoming more open and honest with yourself and trusting others around you to share your brokenness. When I first picked the book my topic was Self- Knowledge but now that I’m actually reading it I’ve realized it talks about Hope quite a few times and how you’re hopeful for a change or to feel better about your current issue. So I have decided to change my topic to Hopefulness. It’s just so strange to think that my mom originally bought the book to help heal herself but now I’m finding myself needing to read what is inside to help myself.

Picking the Work, Pt 2

I was considering going with Sir Francis Bacon's essay "Of Death" in The Essays of Francis Bacon, but I decided to use the book Night by Elie Wiesel instead.

Picking the work

I get bored with books easily so I chose my book based on the topic of the book not the topic of the research paper. The topic that I picked is Money and Class in America because the book is about people betting on little league football games.

My Book

I chose the book "The American View of Death: Acceptance or Denial" because the topic itself relates so much to the abstract and I find it fascinating. The title and book cover make me actually want to read the book! Also I want to know what the "American View of Death" really means.
