Optical Illusions

Optical illusions, what can I say? They are a unique type of art where your mind tends to warp and change your perspective on simple objects or images. Just as this cut out “cube” is demonstrating.

I believe optical illusions are classified as high art because of how it can change your perspective and can have you wanting more. High art should make you feel this way... right? Making you feel excited and craving more of it. And the thing is, it’s also cheap (Able to be created by most of the population).

With such simplicity and spunk, I can’t help myself from looking at more of these!

I love makeup but I dont like how people criticize how other people do their makeup and how many girls are indirectly forced to adhere to standards they shouldn’t. for example girls who are transgender, girls of color, and elderly women are the most susceptible to being forced to cover up aspects about themselves that is considered “imperfect”, like big, wide noses with contour, wrinkles, and softening their facial structures. all of these things contradict what people say is the real reason for wearing makeup, which is self expression. I think that there are many aspects of makeup that do involve creativity like sf makeup, and cosplay makeup which involve a lot of dexterity and along with molding which is seen in sculpting.Makeup that involves color theory and coordination has the ability to be creative and involves things many artists and painters have to involve in their works.

Graffiti as Art

I wouldn’t necessarily say all forms of graffiti are art, but there are undeniable qualities of art in some forms of it. Anything requiring planning, imagination, and other aesthetic criteria like color and composition should be considered art, which denies the title to tags (spray painted signatures) which take no time or talent to make whatsoever. Legality is also a big reasoning on why it should not be considered art, but some forms of graffiti are legal; and either way, who said the government had to approve of art?

In today’s society there are various types of art or can be considered as art, such as makeup. Most people use makeup to look good for the day, or for a certain event. Others use it as a form of self expression, and that’s just it, It’s more than just of self expression it’s an art. A high art at that, it gives people the freedom of what they truly want to do or be. The idea of the makeup is make this pretty facade for everyone to see in one’s eye, majority girls and boys, but some use makeup as a form of showing someone who they want to be and who they truly are inside. It gives people the choice to make themselves however they like to be seen as. In some’s point of view, they see it as lying to another to give off the impression of someone they are not. While others see it as an opportunity to be able to get creative, to give an illusion of breathtaking beauty of one’s vision depending how they want to portray it. As if there was an important art museum opening and to see the makeup really come to life, and makeup doesn’t just stay on the face, it also shows as the form of body art which is already a key of being high art. Although others may disagree, majority men, makeup is what makes the impression on them in the first place. Makeup gives the idea to a man what kind of person woman they are, it tells them what they are getting involved with, if they only would go into that much detail. The quality of makeup is also the importance of what level it ranks. It’s not all important information to know, it may not even cross through anyone’s mind as to what makeup is, something to cover up flaws, imperfections, dislikes one your own appearance. It could be that it sets the mood your in or being more like a habit yet makeup also opens to so many ideas and imagination, it’s the same as any other regular painting except instead of a white blank canvas, the human face and body is the canvas and gives anyone the idea to at least look into it, given out of curiosity. It gives those chances to the people that want to show others and the world a fortuity to see in your eyes what makeup can be/become in today’s world and the future’s as well.

The Book of Mormon

Broadway theatre is the overall definition used to describe theatrical performances that perform on one of the 41 stages in the theater district of midtown Manhattan.

The Book of Mormon which is arguably entirely comedy. The Book of Mormon is a show that follows a young Mormon Kevin Price who is sent on his two year mission with his peer Arnold Cunningham. Many people might suggest that The Book of Mormon wouldn’t be considered high art because it is written by the creators of South Park and is a comedy, I disagree. Yes, it is a comedy, but also it has the underlying message that you can’t run away from your responsibilities and sometimes things will disappoint you. The Book of Mormon is simply a musical about two boys trying to help a country that is impoverished by trying to convert them to their religion in unorthodox ways. 

The show is beautifully written and orchestrated with all of the crazy antics and the stunning visuals like the very opening of the show. Many elements come together in such a strange way that it seems almost magical. I believe that the Book of Mormon is indeed High Art because of the creative way the issues and the message are presented and the fact that it meets all of my criteria for being a great musical.

In order for a Broadway Musical to be considered High Art I believe it has to have won a Tony Award, have a plot that ties up all loose ends, have a soundtrack with at least 10 songs, a smaller number of leads, and has both elements of comedy and tragedy. Many shows are good shows but not all meet these which makes for a separation between the goods and the greats. The Tony Awards are the Oscars of the Broadway world, all musicals strive to receive a Tony and many shows get nominated.

One of the best Tony’s to receive is the award for Best Musical which The Book of Mormon was nominated for, and won in 2011. The Book of Mormon is one of the rare satires in the theatre world that continue for a long time and that is why I think it is High Art.

Why Video Editing is High Art

When people think of art, they think of high art like the Mona Lisa; but they don’t think of video editing as an art. When you watch a movie, most people don’t appreciate the amount of work that went into each and every scene. For every second in a movie, there are 60 frames. For every frame in a movie such as The Avengers, the special effects for all the superpowers and explosions have to be animated for each frame. That’s sixty times every second that these effects have to be animated. This means that you could be spending hours on just a few seconds. Video editing is an even higher form of art than painting since in every second, you are creating 60 individual paintings.

Video editing is similar to sculpting, which is already considered a high art. One example of the similarity is when I made an effect where my friend punched me and I flew down the hallway and splatted on the wall at the end. 

I start by trimming the footage to remove the excess and arrange the clips to make the story, just like how sculptors remove large portions of stone to start. Then at 0:18, I started by making my body fly down the hallway, then added an explosion when I get punched, then at 0:19 add blood splats and sound effects at the end. This is the part of sculpting when you refine the look by removing smaller pieces of stone to get the desired look. Finally, you finish by adding small adjustments like color correction or stabilizing the footage to remove shake, just like how a sculptor polishes and sands their sculpture. Since the process for creating a special effect for a video is so similar to making a sculpture, how can one be high art and the other not?

One category of video editing is special effects, which are an essential part of today’s cinematic experience. Today’s movies wouldn't be the same without them. Laurence Fishburne says that “Special effects are characters. Special effects are essential elements. Just because you can't see them doesn't mean they aren't there.” What he is trying to say is that even if you don’t notice the special effects, they are still present and create the atmosphere of the film. It’s all of the subtle editing choices that may go unnoticed by many viewers, but all add up to an incredible effect.

Another reason special effects are high art is the fact that all high art has a high level of intricacy and complexity, and so does special effects. One example of the level of complexity involved in editing special effects is a scene like a plane explosion.

Optical Illusions

I have been recently enamored with optical illusions. They’re simply extravagant in their visual effects. They simply are a spectacle of the eye in beauty through their power of confusion. They also can be used to heal people and exercise one’s mind. The crazy thing about healing people with optical illusions, is that it basically involves only a mirror and an amputee. The amputee uses the mirror to rehabilitate their idea that they lost a limb. This in turn stops the amputee from thinking that their limb is still in a state of pain or distress, allowing the amputee to relax. Plus, it’s something to get most controversial topics out of my head (2016 has been a disaster). This is something I can enjoy that doesn’t negatively impact me or society. With so many outlets of optical illusions (Magicians, digital media, etc.), there are so many places to find them.Simple, yet fascinating. I me some love illusions.

Spray paint, abandoned buildings, inspiration and a starving artist. An artist who doesn't or hasn't had the chance to prove their passionate art skills. Does their lack of access to a canvas really measure their abilities? Does a canvas make or break their careers as an artist? Is there really much of a difference between a beautiful painting on a canvas and a beautiful painting on an abandoned building? Both painters and graffiti artists have a lot of similarities, so why is painting considered a fine art and graffiti isn't? Graffiti should be considered a high art, like painting because they both push the limits of society, express an abstract idea, or emotion and require immense skill. Another popular piece of graffiti is called “Tuttomondo” or “The Whole World” It's a beautiful painting that takes up the entire side of an abandoned house. It’s very different from the first two graffiti pieces. The mural is very busy, with lots of different people, symbols and colors that spreads throughout the side of the building. “The Whole World” is by Keith Haning, who revealed that his mural represented peace. One of his figures on the mural specifically is of a mother and her child, which represents purity, innocence and rebirth, in all rhetorical means. Haning’s piece also, like Ammaz’s brings light into a world problem but instead of world hunger, Haning’s painting is about world peace. All the different shapes, colors and sizes all fit together on this mural and although they aren’t the same they all fit together one way or another.Which is exactly what Haning’s intentions were. Many people don’t think that graffiti should be considered a high art. Actually in some places graffiti is illegal. Art, illegal. And, I do admit that no, not all graffiti is high art. Spewing profanities on abandoned buildings is not art, it requires no technique skill or even most of the time, thought. But, graffitti artists such as Banksy, Ammaz and Haning are . Artists who decide to defy the rules of art itself and bring new meaning to the old and destroyed. Who make rhetorical choices just like painters, and who bring art to life. Except, with graffiti, the world is their canvas.
