So, a lot of folks in my circle are arguing and panicking about whether or not society as we know it is about to collapse.
Those who say no are called stupid and in denial. Those who say yes are called paranoid. Either way, there’s a shit-ton of anxiety happening.
When the pandemic started to explose in Korea, in early 2020, my mother-in-law was TERRIFIED. She was scared for us, and she was worried that it would spread to our state and kill Grandma. It didn’t help that everyone told Mum-in-Law that she was being paranoid.
To be fair, Hubby and I were scared as shit too. None of us were functioning well from the worries.
So we sat down on a Skype call together, us and Mum-in-Law. And we assumed, for the sake of argument, that everything was actually about to hit the fan. We went all-out: societal collapse, Mad Max, post-apocalyptic hellscape, we went full-on ad absurdem with it. Then we hammered out a survival plan for each and every scenario. All of them. And we decided on shit we could do right then to get started preparing.
Mum-in-Law started stockpiling quilting cotton and sewing masks. I researched hand sanitizer recipes (because the stores were already selling out). Dad-in-Law got dragged into it by expanding the family vegetable and herb garden, adding rows of garlic, onions, and herbs to help with respiratory health. We arranged for Grandma to never have to do her own grocery shopping.
Did society collapse? Time will tell. It didn’t immediately. Shit got dicey over there, I won’t lie. But Mum-in-Law made hundreds of masks and passed them out all over the county. There were fresh, immune-boosting herbs and veggies for the whole family and most of the neighbors.
Personally, I don’t think this is over. Not by a long shot, I think it’s going to get a lot worse before it improves. I hope I’m wrong. But it’s hurting no one to prepare. Really preparing, by getting skills like sewing and nutrition that will help our communities, benefits us all whether it all goes to hell or no. And it helps with the doomsday anxieties.
