The lunar scouts. Before the Apollo astronauts could land on the Moon 🌙 , NASA’s Lunar Orbiter program was key in finding the appropriate landing sites. . The program consisted of 5 unmanned probes that were launched between 1966 and 1967. . The probes used an ingenious method to capture images using dual lens camera 📷 (bottom left) - one which provided high resolution images and the other low resolution ones on the same film. In addition to photographing the Moon’s surface, the program also provided us the first picture of Earth from the Moon 🌚 (bottom right). . When Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the Moon 50 years ago, he famously said “that’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” He was referring to the historic milestone of exploring beyond our own planet, and until this day, the moon landing is the most complex project ever accomplished by mankind. A remarkable achievement that we celebrate with pride, joy and respect for a generation of scientists that made this impossible dream a reality, 50 years ago today. . 📷: -Buzz Aldrin, photographed by Neil Armstrong, July 20, 1969. -Launch Control Center. -Buzz Aldrin's photo of Neil Armstrong, while still in Earth orbit, a little over an hour after liftoff. - Buzz Aldrin on Day 3 of the Apollo 11 mission, in the Lunar Module during its checkout en route to the Moon . #menlosophy #moon #apollo11 #apollomission #space #spacestation #mankind #moonlanding #buzzaldrin #neilarmstrong https://www.instagram.com/p/B0JmppgIm3_/?igshid=ljkhfij2vj17
