Oh, good question! Transfer students, students at small schools, and students who’ve switched majors may find this particularly relevant.
Joining a club is probably the easiest way, but not everyone has time for that, and there are other ways! Often people are open to making friends outside their initial group, and people may have more than one friend group. You may not be that person’s first priority initially, but you might be surprised at how relationships can grow.

Get to class early if you can, and talk to the people while you’re waiting for class to start.
Talk to the people who sit near you in class. Staying in one seat is a good way to form longer-term bonds. Moving seats will increase the number of people you meet.
You can talk about class and school, but try to branch out and find other things in common and things you don’t have in common that you can tell each other about.
Exchange phone numbers! Put their name in your contacts! Add them on Facebook or Instagram or Snapchat. Don’t just exchange emails—that pretty much guarantees a school-only friendship.
When you exchange numbers, make sure to actually text those people! Don’t just be names in each other’s phones.
Invite other students to study with you or hang out during breaks between classes. And don’t be discouraged if they want to hang out with other people; sometimes cliques aren’t as hard to get into as they look.
If someone drops you, don’t worry, it happens. Try to make more than one friend so it doesn’t hit you as hard. If you’re someone with a history of making people uncomfortable, reevaluate that relationship and try better next time!
