I know Kripke set out the write supernatural about the Midwest but idk appalachianatural. When Dean is 16 and Sam is 12 they spend the summer squatting in this busted up house in Pulaski, VA . John’s hunting something in Roanoke and has the car, so the two of them fix up this rickety bike they found buried in the kudzu behind the house and take turns. Dean gets a job at Bojangles. It’s dumb hot, muggy, and when it rains the roof leaks and the eaves sag and everything starts to smell like rot. They’re convinced their elderly neighbor is gonna call the cops if she finds out they’re squatting, but she doesn’t. She has Sam sit on her porch with her as she chain smokes and snap green beans from her garden while Dean’s at work. They go exploring the creek on the other side of the road that the drainage pipe leaks into and catch crawdads. Cicadas screaming. Whippoorwills so loud it wakes them both up before sunrise, cold mornings. Walking barefoot. Tomato sandwiches. Dean biking up the mountain to the house all sweaty with a jug of iced tea in his backpack for Sam.
