Treatment of appendicitis may be done in the following ways:
a. Non-Surgical Approach:
In certain instances, especially when the inflammation is mild and detected early, a non-surgical approach may be considered. This method entails the utilization of antibiotics to mitigate inflammation and infection. Non-surgical management may be a viable choice for patients with uncomplicated appendicitis, wherein there is no perforation or abscess formation. However, it's important to note that this option isn't suitable for all patients, and diligent monitoring is necessary to ensure the condition improves through antibiotic therapy.
b. Surgical Intervention:
The most prevalent and efficacious course of action for appendicitis is surgery, referred to as an appendectomy. Two primary surgical techniques are employed:
a. Open Appendectomy: This constitutes a conventional surgical procedure in which an incision, typically ranging from 2 to 4 inches in length, is made in the lower right abdomen to excise the inflamed appendix. It is a well-established and dependable approach but entails a lengthier recovery period and may result in a more conspicuous scar. Open appendectomy is usually chosen when there is a substantial risk of complications or when laparoscopic surgery is not a feasible option.
b. Laparoscopic Appendectomy: Also known as minimally invasive surgery, this method involves creating multiple small incisions (usually 3 or 4) and employing a laparoscope (a slender tube equipped with a camera) to guide the removal of the appendix. Laparoscopic appendectomy generally leads to a swifter recovery, diminished discomfort, and smaller scars. It is the preferred approach for uncomplicated cases and situations where the appendix remains unruptured.
