there is no way that Hitomi is straight in the 2004 version of Appleseed, and she clearly is head over heels in love with Deunan.
Hitomi has been studying how to get Deunan into their ideal city for a long time. She is clearly impressed by Deunan’s military prowess and good looks. But is this mere admiration? I say no. Why?
1. The two girls spend more time together and talk more to each other than to any other characters
2. They are the two clear protagonists of the movie, Deunan’s motivations in the end are to save Hitomi
3. If one of them was a boy, all of this would mean that they were to become a pairing, inequivocally, so why is it different for girls? oh yea i know why. But wait, there’s more:
4. Hitomi makes comments about how pretty Deunan is / how cute she looks in at least two (2) separate occasions. (”She is awful cute when she sleeps!”) There could be more instances. I don’t remember.
5. They go to a bar at night, just the two of them and Hitomi proceeds to steal wistful looks at Deunan, while talking to her about how bioroids’ feelings are less intense and how she wishes she could feeeel loooove
look at these beedroom eyes
6. Deunan’s supposed love interest, Briareos, doesn’t talk to her for most of the movie, and even when they do talk, nothing particularly emotional is said. EXCEPT for when he needs Deunan to stay focused on the mission and not ask too many questions. What does her ‘love interest’ tell her then? ‘Hitomi needs you’, basically.
7. Almost at the end of the movie, Yoshi (a character that’s been mostly irrelevant) tells Deunan somehthing like ‘’I know Hitomi told you we bioroids can’t really feel, but that is not true, we do feel love, go save her and us and the world please’. A possible interpretation: He is in love with Hitomi. My interpretation: How did he know what Hitomi and Deunan talked about in the bar? The logical explanation is that Hitomi told him about the conversation. If she confessed to Yoshi that she’s crazy about Deunan or if he deduced ‘ffs this girl is OBVIOUSLY IN LOVE WITH THE HUMAN go KISS HER or something’, that’s for you to decide
9. In conclussion. I know that my theory doesn’t hold through the manga and other movies, but taking this film as a standalone film, you can’t deny that there is enough evidence to ship them together. Note that the film is not a faithful adaptation of the manga. It is supposed to be taken as a separate story. Was this intentional or were the screenwriters blind to what they were doing? I prefer to believe.
