MIXED COMPANY, no. 5. The Apples in Stereo, Tone Soul Evolution. So much pep. So studiously happy. Almost so studiously happy it ends up ... oddly neutral? But it’s peppy fun. And I’ve been singing “Seems So” for days and days and days now. I guess this Elephant Six collective was a bunch of friends and cohorts starting a label and Neutral Milk Hotel (an upcoming selection eventually) is part of it, and that makes me say, “Ah, maybe this is retro-happy to the same degree that NMH is folkrock-sad.” Maybe, more later on that. There are BeachBoyBeatlesKinksEtc quote marks around a lot of Apples in Stereo, maybe all of it. This album has the lead guy’s girlfriend (wife?) on it. She left him&them eventually. I think I became aware of these guys on one of those compilation CDs Paste magazine used to send out. And then I saw this random album for sale (you almost never see random albums from this era of CD/mp3 dominance at affordable prices). I enjoyed every track the other night when I played it and like I said, “It seems so, I don’t know.... I saw the whole thing from my window... or is this the kind of tripe that people like to put on television.....” la la la I can’t stop singing the first track. #theapplesinstereo #applesinstereo #seemsso (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJU6X14rXw8/?igshid=1pjwwldq4m20q
