– MIDNIGHT TEASE, the headline reads, bold as brass and clear as day. it’s a ‘clever’ play on words – the name of the biggest, most exclusive club in san francisco, with an entrance fee almost as high as the city skyline, and a reminder of just how the subject of the article lost his life. as you further scan the article, you come to learn the full details of the case at hand.

caleb todd, 21, had been found dead in an alleyway behind the club a week prior, with six gunshot wounds to his torso and one neatly between his eyes. witnesses say that he had stormed out shortly after an argument with his girlfriend, 18 year old alice dubois, a prima-ballerina on her rise to stardom. the couple had been bickering on and off throughout the night, with the tension coming to a head when todd had assumed dubois was flirting with another man.

dubois had left the club in a state, crying profusely and almost incoherent. a source tells the newspaper that they had been unhappy for a long time – todd was disloyal, and dubois was touring with her troupe – but this appears to be the straw that broke the camel’s back. for the rest of the night, the group todd and dubois had arrived with heard nothing from them, and assumed todd had caught up with dubois in an attempt to reconcile with her. the next day, he is found dead.

dubois, her friends miles urzowich (21), beatrice haven-beckett (22) and maria harding (19), have been taken in for questioning, though it seems very clear who the culprit appears to be.

—– the news article ends after naming the suspects currently in custody. you recognise the first two as castmates of alice’s, dancers who worked alongside her in her production of swan lake. the last name is a little foreign, though, if you know alice, it doesn’t take too long to place her – maria is a girl alice knows very well, an assistant teacher at her studio. she’s also the girl that contacted you in the wake of all this, offered to bring everyone together in this trying time. she’s just as shocked as you – how could a girl so angelic do something so devilish?

despite what you want to believe, one thing seems abundantly clear: alice dubois is unequivocally guilty.

miracle: a person with superhuman abilities, either through the y2k event or birth in the years after. all heroes are also referred to as miracles, but not all miracles are heroes. but more often than not, the general public is usually talking about heroes when they refer to someone as miracles. calamity: also known as bad miracle, is a person with superhuman abilities but have decided to use them for crime and other evildoings. all calamities are miracles, but they are never heroes. apex: a person with no superhuman abilities, but have decided to fight or cause crime through other means, such as technological advancement, biological and chemical enhancements and experimentations, etc. civvy: short for civilian, most often refers to regular human beings without any power or active career in heroism. however, miracles who are retired from heroics or criminality or never had interest in either careers sometimes also refer to themselves as civvies. merk: short for mercenary, is a miracle or regular human who sells their skills and talents to the highest bidder. these individuals are usually hired as assassins, bodyguards, military contractors, stand-in villains hired by pr firms to be beaten by heroes in front of cameras, and other jobs that are not as glamorous as heroism. they are known for their morality that swings depending on the payout. vigil: short for vigilante, is a miracle or regular human who takes the law into their own hands, fighting crime without the usual honor and methods employed by the ever-heroic and media-savvy miracles.
