Have you seen the Youtuber Cartoon Cipher's interview with Tyler Walker? I think you'd find it very insightful

Yes, someone shared it over on /r/Baccano. I meant to share it here in turn, but life’s been a bit demanding lately and I hadn’t gotten around to it yet.

For those wondering, here’s the interview in question. It’s an hour long.

I listened to it last Friday so it’s not entirely fresh in my mind, but I’ll note that the interview invokes/draws upon some of the same points Tyler makes in the DVD dub commentaries. For those who don’t have access to the English dub commentaries, I transcribed all four episode commentaries here if you’d like to have that context.

Although much of the interview does retread familiar ground (for me, having already listened to the commentaries), I was definitely interested in the parts where the interviewer and Walker discuss how different dubbing anime is today compared to the era in which Baccano! was dubbed. Most interested, I suppose one could say, because...

...Well, in October of last year, I wrote a short post expressing doubt/concern that a simuldub of a hypothetical Baccano! ‘reboot’ or ‘new season’ in this day and age would not live up to the high standard the 2007 anime’s dub had set. My reasoning--which I expanded on in this follow-up post--included tighter time restrictions (less time for period research, retakes, script revising) and most of all production material access: assuming that FUNimation would receive new Baccano! material on an episode-by-episode/week-by-week basis, I worried such conditions would be to the dub’s detriment. For a dense, non-linear show like Baccano!, you’d surely want more materials in advance so as ensure you understand what’s going on.

This interview...somewhat validates my concerns, I think. I’m not happy about it, mind you, but look at what Walker says when Cartoon Cipher asks him what the 2007 Baccano! anime would be like if it were produced today:

"I think it would definitely be more challenging [to produce today]..”

"It'd be very challenging. I think maybe the nature of doing things so quickly perhaps may have led to, you know, these days may lead to some more, like, safe choices."

"Not being able to look at the whole picture is just a, especially on something like this, it would be a challenge."

Yikes! I thought so, but yikes! This is what I was worried about! The ‘safe choices’ point included; just as I would want the English dubbing team to have enough time and enough materials to understand what’s going on and punch up the script, I’d want them to have enough leeway for trying out creative ideas. I’d want that collaborative process to have breathing room.

What I’m saying is this interview did not leave me reassured in that vein, haha, oh boy. Oh well, not like a new Baccano! anime is on the table.

I already know you love Okabe/Kurisu, but what about Okabe/Mayuri? Or Kurisu/Mayuri? Or perhaps an OT3?

Mayuri/Okabe/Kurisu: HONESTLY I’m not really an OT3 shipper for the most part! (Nothing wrong with it, of course!! I guess it just isn’t personally appealing to me!)

FIRST OF ALL: I LOVE MAYURI. And these three’s friendship? EPIC AND BEYOND COMPARE

But, I tend to not be a multishipper. So when I ship one pairing containing 2 certain characters, I don’t really ship them with anyone else. cx For me, it will always be Okabe and Kurisu!! 

Okabe/Mayuri has never really appealed to me, personally!! I guess.... Mayuri has always given me a really strong gay vibe? I suppose since it’s canon that she has feelings for Okabe, she’s probably bisexual, but my mind just always sees her as being really really gay for some reason. I always feel like she’d be a good match with Faris or Ruka!

But then again, I tend to really dislike Okabe/Maho too, so maybe I just kind of am stuck on Kurisu/Okabe lol (and Mahoeka..... cough)

BUT I WANT TO CLARIFY THAT THESE SHIPS AREN’T BAD, my mind is just... very loyal to Okakuri cx

(But their friendship trio? Priceless beyond compare...)

Who is the most affectionate?

Neither of them is really the type to be all lovey dovey or gushy, but they definitely have their moments. Eleanor’s are when she’s drunk, she starts off by getting handsy but then just collapses into a puddle of mush that her tall GF will scoop up and snuggle. Tahani’s are when she’s really emotional, like seriously, not just being dramatic emotional. She never got her parents’ comfort when she was upset as a child, so she kinda learned how to store away the really bad emotions and only act them out for drama/attention (something she’s not proud of). However, as she matures, she allows herself to be more open and when she has a bad day, nothing makes her happier than to just get really snuggly was Eleanor. 

Big spoon/Little spoon?

Eleanor would def fight it, but she is so the little spoon. She’d never admit it, but she loves being the little spoon.

Most common argument?

It’s not really about something specific, but their most common problem is both of them being very dramatic. They both blow things out of proportion at times, and that is never good during arguments. 

Favorite non-sexual activity?

I imagine the two of them getting wine drunk and having a dance party. That’d be very cute.

Who is most likely to carry the other?

TAHANI. She’d probably joke around the Eleanor is too big for her to carry, but she’ll still do it.

Nicknames?

There’s a million for Tahani, but I know Eleanor calls her giraffe to annoy her a bit. IDK why this hasn’t been done yet, but Tahani loves calling Eleanor Ellie. Eleanor says it sounds kiddish but she doesn’t mind it. But, Tahani and only Tahani is allowed to call her that.

Who worries the most?

I’d say Tahani, as she is very much a perfectionist. She gets stressed out, a lot, but after being around Eleanor for a bit, she learns how to unwind a little, to go more with the flow.

Who tops?

Tahani, next question. 

Who initiates kisses?

I’d say both, it depends on the mood. Eleanor is a little more selective with her kisses, as she prefers other displays of affection, but she’ll always go in for a big fat one when she wants to show off that this hot girl on her arm is her GF. 

Who wakes up first?

Eleanor, like me, often does not wake up before 12pm lol 

Who says I love you first

Eleanor, and it’s accidental. She means it, but wasn’t quite ready to say it. We all know she’s a bit emotionally stunted, so something like this is a big thing for her to say, but Tahani knows when she doesn’t take it back that it’s something serious, even if it just slipped out.

yours, mine, ours by cityboys on Ao3, is a great Momojirou fic, it's a catering au, and its pretty fantastic. It is an evenly split dual narrative however, so just a warning if you don't like tododeku.

Aw damn…I saw previews and ads for the show but I unfortunately never got to watch a full episode before they took it off. And it came and went way too fast! Some legal issues from what I heard…I need to check it out soon (I think KimCartoon has it?). I’ve heard that it’s a REALLY great show and I really like the animation and character designs from what I’ve seen.
